The definitive tyre / wheel size thread

Advice would be to buy them and try them. You may have only a little rubbing of the wheel arch liners on the inside on full lock. From there it is up to you on what wheel sizes you go for.

For some 185/65 is ok, others need to go lower on either profile or width. Up to you

I've got 185/65 and it works for me, but might not for you. Are you lowered?

No, my car is not lowered. The problem could be then full lock, because the race track that I will use has a lot of slow speed closed turns. Hm...

My car is calibrated for 195/55x15 tyres and have been offered some brand new 205/55x15 tyres on genuine barnd new Audi wheels at a too good to miss price. However my addled brain cannot work out what effect this would have on gearing/speedo reading until such time I can get it recalibrated. Help!

Your rolling circumference will be increased by 33.18mm or 1.85% with the new 205 tyres over the 195's so when your speedometer is reading 70mph you will actually be travelling at 71.3mph.

Assuming its currently accurate, which is unlikely.

What size are the rims & tyres on those? If they're not off an A2 I'd guess that the tyres wouldn't fit.

Well i think there off a4 or a3 as for the tyres iam not bothered about tyres a just after wheels for winter but not sure on them fitting (offset) Getting a part number from 1 of the wheels tomorrow so will post that if anyone can help

Read the previous thread to your last post! They ARE almost certainly A4 wheels so they will NOT fit! Believe me I have researched wheels to an anal extent in trying to find some for mine. ANY VAG group wheel that is 5x100 PCD and an ET of around 35-38mm give or take will fit. VW Golf Mk4 wheels are plentiful and one of teh favourites are pepperpots, very light weight too.

This is the part number on them wheels (Ad315019) Will anyone be able to see if they will go on

They should be fine.

I know there are others that have gone with that tyre size over the standard 205/40 17 to gain a little more comfort from the 10mm odd taller side walls.

Remember the 45 is a percentage of the 205 width not 45mm as some people think.

Also bear in mind it will alter your speedo reading a tad.

I run 205/45/R17. There's no arguement with the wheel arch liners as long as the steering is nicely centred. The speedo is bang-on and the gain in comfort is considerable. If running 17" 7J alloys, this gets my recommendation.

Correct me if i'm wrong but the speedo can't be bang on if it was set correct initially with the standard 40 profiles, as with the 45's when the speedo reads 70mph you would actually be travelling 70.41mph.

Is there any fouling on full lock?

... if it was set correct initially with the standard 40 profiles...

The speedo is deliberately intended to overreport the speed on standard wheels (by about 5% ish), and the odo is normally about right. So if you increase the tyre circumference as much as possible, the speedo will be closer to correct, but the odo will then be underreporting.

Indeed. The speedo is normally optimistic; if it says you're doing 70, you're actually doing 67, etc...
As Mike says, the odometer however is about acurate when it leaves the factory, so my A2 is now racking up miles slightly slower than is true.
