The definitive tyre / wheel size thread

Just noticed that my A2's studded winter tires are size 185/65 R 15" , which has 30mm bigger diameter than 185/50 R16. The tires are Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5's

The previous owner told me he had used the tires for last winter, so apparently they don't rub. I didn't notice any stud scrapes in she wheel liners...
I'm amazed by the diameter of the tires, and may swap them to my Skoda Roomster which has much larger wheel arches and 195/55 R15 studded tires. The cars share the same PCD so it's easy to try them on.

Just to let you know that it's possible to use that size too, but maybe not recommendable. Tires are legal in finland as long as the diameter stays within +50mm from original size.

I will go for 185/60R15s this winter, probably Hakka 5s, depending on the offers. The old 185/55R15s are 7 years old and very hard, so I'd prefer something that's a bit more grippy ;)

I'm looking forward to getting my first set of proper winter tires...it appears Hakka's are the tyre of choice. Will put them on the 15's. Is there a 'Best' time to buy them?

Sounds like a good size, that's what I would buy too...

If I kept the 185/65R15's I would have to forget my Weitec -30 lowering plans. +30mm from tires combined with -30mm suspension sounds crazy.

On the other hand, using 185/65R15 tires with raised front end because of FSD's would make it look like tractor. Swapping to 195/55/R15 from my Skoda seems to be my best option...

they're around €100 each at the moment from Vianor, so €400 for a set... and I don't think it's going to get *that* much better. Rengasmaaailma, tire.fi and rengas-online.com are all pretty much in accordance.

Does anyone know any reason please why Audi A1 15" Steel Winter Wheels 6 x 15 5 x 100.00 x 57.00 ET: 29.00 5-hole steel wheel (7415) with 185 60 15 Tyres will not work on my 2003 A2 1.4SE ?

mytyres say they should be 5 x 15 5 x 100.00 x 57.00 ET: 28.00 5-hole steel wheel (8025) with 165 65 15 but theres very little difference as far as I can see.

An update to the first post; the definitive tyre list:

205/45/17 is absolutely fine and doesn't rub the wheelarch liners, so long as your steering rack is properly centred (though that applies to pretty much everything!)
215/40/17 has a smaller rolling circumference but is obviously slightly wider. Nevertheless, they're also absolutely fine.

Bret, können Sie das bitte hinzufügen? Danke.

I could not get a definitive answer on " would the the A1 6J x 15 ET 29 Steel Wheels be O.K. ? " so I`ve gone the official route now. Got 4 Genuine Audi A2 5J x 15 ET 28 Steel Winter Wheels from local Audi Dealer £160 inc. Ordered 4 Vredestein 165 65 15 81T Snowtrac 3 Tyres form www.mytyres.co.uk this morning. They had gone down to £56.20 each this morning, although they were about £10 more per tyre last night. The Audi info was that there was a 5.5J x 15 ET 28 option available for the A2 . Dealer ordered the Part Number which was supposed to be for the 5.5" ones. They arrived with that Part Number on them but they are still only 5" rims ! That`s a pity because the Vredestein website lists the more common 195 55 15 tyres as an optional size Winter Tyre for the A2. You can only go up to 185s on 5" rims. 5.5" are needed for 195s.

I have emailed Audi Customer Services for an explanation.

Will I get a reply ?

no, because that's part of teh tyre makers' testing and nothing to do with Audi. You may find one that will allow it (but I doubt it very much). If you're only on 5", I'd go 185/60R15 as being the most common / cheapest size...

The part number ordered for 5.5" Wheels was :- 8Z0601027A03C

Audi Dealership Parts Dept said the "C" Suffix was for the 5.5J x 15 ET28 Option for the A2.

I think it`s just an error on the Audi parts listings. It didn`t seem likely to me they would do a 5" and a 5.5".

They did. The 5" were for the 155/65R15 originals. Mine are also 5.5s. I suspect the 5.5 were originally created with the Polo in mind. The 5.5s have a completely different set of approvals. Having said that, it appears that those have disappeared from the market, as have the wheels to suit. Smallest I can find in a quick look is 5.5x15 and 165/65R15.

Hy all,

I came across of a free set of steel rims that fits perfectly on my a2, the only problem is that they are 14's (6j).Would i be able to use them for winter and if i can, what size for tyres i should get( no listing on this thread for 14's).

Thanks in advance!

I see the Bridgestone Bilzzak LM30 gets good reviews, most notably it's built to be quite light too, does anyone have experience with these?

I'm planning on fitting these to pepperpot wheels, most probably in 185-55-15 size.

Here's the write-up from the Openeo site:

Tyres Bridgestone Blizzak LM30 195/55 R15 85 H
The Blizzak LM-30 targets a wide range of compacts, mid-sized cars and family saloons up to T and H speed ratings. It offers them safe all-round winter driving with maximum control on snow and ice, and the reassurance of short braking distances on slush and wet.
Precision Response
Special features include new “3D Washboard and slit” siping on the centre rib for extra grip and block stiffness, high edge density in the centre area for maximum bite on hard-packed snow and ice, and continuous Z-shape lugs which enhance edge effect and snow shear force in all driving directions.
•Asymmetrical pattern with high central edge component for outstanding grip on snow and ice
•Optimized void and groove distribution balancing snow, wet and dry performance
•Silica-reinforced tread compound for reliable braking and grip across all winter conditions
•Robust, durable construction ensures consistent and comfortable handling
Bridgestone has also made the new Blizzak LM-30 more environment-friendly and economical, compared to the Blizzak LM-20 it replaces. By reducing rolling resistance by up to 16% through weight loss resulting from the optimization of the carcass shape and belt package, fuel consumption has been cut by up to 2.5% and CO2 emissions reduced by up to 4.5 g/km. The LM-30 also reduces pass-by noise by more than 1dB and in-car noise by 2dB.

Just info for anyone thinking of getting 15" Steel Wheels. Both the 5" x 15 and the 5.5" x 15 are still readily available from Audi. Be careful with the Part Numbers when ordering. Part Number for 5.5" is 8Z0 601 027 03C. If you order 8Z0 601 027 A03C they are only the 5" ones. Mine were accidentally ordered as the 5" ones when I wanted the 5.5". They are being exchanged tomorrow by my local Audi Dealer.

only 3Ls had 14s, so they should fit but there are no approvals.

We had LM22s on the 307 and they were fine. I don't see that you can go wrong with any of the major brands...

Thanks Bretti, I got a set of Dunlop Winter Response's, 185-55-15 fitted to my A3 Pepperpot wheels.

The choice was Michelin Alpin A4 (£440), Continental WinterContact T970 (£426) or Dunlop Winter Response (£380), prices include fitting and nitrogen inflation at Kwik-Fit (booked and paid for online).

Research on the net showed the Dunlop's to be better than the Continental's, I didn't think it was worth the extra expense for the Michelin's though they are highly regarded.

Just picked up a set of Nokkian Hakka 7s 185/60/15 at €460 to be put on next week.....they might need some KMs to bed in.

Those prices seem high. I paid nowhere near that last year for my 195/50x15's Continental winters with Kwik Fit online last year! Can't find the receipt but seem to recall around £260-280 fitted.
