This weekends mod - double DIN conversion without removing the dash

It’s virtually plug and play with just a couple of wires to modify. I can do you a diagram if required?

I'm always looking at ways to improve my A2. I've got RNS-E with 7-digit postcode search on the Sat-Nav. I've got DVBT and DAB. That's all with separate units. ( Media-DAB and Ampire DVBT-400 ). I'm not bothered about the expenditure, so could I ask you what would be the improvements I'd get from fitting the same unit as you've installed? Touch-screen, all-in-one, reversing camera, DAB? Also, the Sat-Nav, what does it do? Would it be a direct, easy replacement for the RNS-E? On mine, Sat-Nav also comes up in a small window in the instrument cluster .... I'd not get that, I suppose? I can play-back pop videos from a memory stick .... does your unit have that feature?

The benefits of this rather than an rnse are small things like built in Bluetooth, WiFi connectivity, DAB, 3g/4g at an extra cost, touch screen, the ability to download extra apps etc. You're right, it does not communicate with the DIS as the canbus in the unit cannot communicate in the same language, however, after buying a small adapter for the OBD II port, the unit has the ability to communicate with the car to give acceleration data, speed data, rev counter, etc. You can also see fault codes and clear them on the unit due to the adapter.

Sam's car has colour mfa. So by the sounds of it she will lose the track title on the display. Small price to pay I think for a lot of benefits

I've got that, too ! Tom fitted the upgraded colour DIS unit with many, many features. I think that changing my RNS-E WOULD be a bit frivolous .,... but that has never stopped me before! We'll have to see .....

The main thing stopping me is more the SOUND of the unit being an unknown. Sound quality is a prime consideration for me and having the BOSE system with RNS-E is a MAJOR factor, I would be very nervous about losing the excellent sound quality from the BOSE system.

Plus with having the directions appear on the dash on the ColourDIS (and Normal DIS) is also quite a nice touch as it is a bit of a pain having to look down each time to check that I'm taking the correct junction etc. For you folks with RNS-E & ColourDIS you enable this by holding the underneath button for two seconds whilst display has NAVI in the top right, just underneath the track or radio station display.

But you’d still be using the Bose amp and just feeding it from the RCA’s of the head unit. We fed the rear speakers with the rear RCA’s of the head unit and used the standard Blauplunkt rear amp and I can tell you the front speakers fed direct from the head unit have far better sound that the rears. I know it’s not Bose but I really don’t see how you’d lose any quality especially as you will be able to use high quality music files stored in the head unit.

The "input" files are exactly the same (320kbps MP3s usually), but it's all about the DACs (Digital Analogue Converter) - I'm happy to be proved wrong, but the Bose sound is fine tuned for the A2.

A very interesting thread kleynie, I've noticed that the unit is no longer available from the seller. How is the unit holding up?

It’s fine, still working well apart from the CANBUS interface which stopped working, but a switch ignition feed replaced that. A newer model is available that looks similar from the same manufacturer for about £250.

Nice work and a really good guide. I quite fancy giving that a go one day but was wondering whether it could be done on a car without climate just standard heater controls?

Depronman has done that...

Yes but Paul's a real life wizard lol I think I'll just have to live with the concert. Interesting read all the same. Thanks

The only thing left to do was to connect everything up and push the unit into position

After some initial issues with the DAB lead and getting a new one everything worked perfectly. As a bonus and a result of fitting the reverse camera, when the car is put into reverse it mutes the audio and we can hear the parking sensors.
We haven’t had chance to try the Bluetooth yet, but the DAB and FM works along with my sons music library that he uploaded to the unit.

Great result I think.
Hi not sure if you are still using this stereo but if you are how has it been , operation? Sound quality etc
