To buy or not...

As said there must be a forum member close to your location. We are scattered throughout uk. Maybe you could visit someone or arrange to meet to view an a2 in more detail?

I would love to meet a member in real life and go for a drive (as a passenger). Maybe I won't like the car at all, and buying a vehicle purely because I fancy it and like the design etc isn't maybe wise at all. I dunno.

Now new question has arisen: 75 or 90hp for TDI engine? I don't want to remap it. Unless I should?
And I no longer want FSI engine.

Is high(er) mileage circa 200k with FSH a good idea? I see online they can last long but then I've seen 300k FSI somewhere in Germany...

I got mine from Near Manchester somewhere - by Blackburn maybe. Whalley bridge seems to ring a bell. ? it was three train changes and a few hours (I’m in Glasgow).

My friend usually gets cars in places like Devon and Essex because he is picky about colour (purple) and price. He always gets a great deal and makes a fun day of it.

That one in Kings Lynn is very pretty. A lot can be added later but a well cared for car with good servicing is a good idea. Mine is a TDI75 and I’ve had to do very little really. Biggest cost in five years has been a new clutch (first one managed 215,000 miles).

I like my 75 and the remap is good but it was properly nice to drive before it’s just a bit more exciting now. Fuel economy is great. I do about 15,000 miles a year. I’m a mechanical numpty and thanks to Sarge’s diy guides managed a filters and fluids service by myself recently.

Parts are available as are fitting services and members who will help with advice or actual professional work as you wish. Mine was £4,500 for a basic SE at about 140,000 miles. Ive since added leather heated seats, TT alloys, aero wiper arm, new brakes, ipod aux in, rear cup holder and repaired a few wee bits and bobs. All good fun, nice and cheaply done and helped along the way by people on here.

Come, join us...

The tdi 90 has a variable vane turbo more torque and better driveability than a standard 75bhp. The only weakness it has is a dual mass flywheel that can prove troublesome. A 75bhp tdi can be remapped to almost the level of a 90. U takes ur pick. Both have 55plus mpg and £30 per year tax.

Hi Matt,

As I said I am a FSI owner and have no experience of diesels, so what I say is only hearsay from here. The 75 TDI is considered very reliable but if you want more 'go' there is the 90TDI, but it comes with the overhead of an expensive repair at some point connected with the the turbo???, something to check out with a prospective purchase to see if it's already been done.

Paul's(Deproman) remaps are low cost and universally appreciated.

FSH Is good with any car but I would aim at 150k or less and should not be to hard to find.

Andy

Expect most tdi s to be around the 100k mark as a minimum. Even though it's only a 1.4 3 cylinder engine they are very good motorway cruisers. Comfortable eating up the miles at a steady 70mph

So I take the 75hp is a bit simpler than 90 as it doesn't have DMF and/or turbo? The simpler the better for me.

I think I would manage with installing new clutch myself if needed. I did some DIY on my cars before, mostly stuff like brakes, broken coil springs, difficult aux belts/tensioners (includes dropping the whole engine few inches on a jack...).

I don't need the A2 to be fast, just normal to drive with reliable engine and good parts supply. I can't stand losing a good car due to rusty suspension and/or unable to source/wait months for those suspension bits.

Currently having short commute, but me and wifey like to drive away for weekends and we easily can do 500miles over a single wkend. Overall it's about 15k miles annually, but better the drive -> more miles put in :D

I don't mind mpg of 55 at all, as I'm used to 28 (of 98 ron gosh!) and more recently 44.

My budget is 2000 pound max.

Personally I wouldn’t rule out the 1.4 petrol, having just done over 700 miles in a weekend in ours. I’d buy on condition, spec and colour before engine I think. Despite having less than a quarter of the power of my main car I never felt I needed any more power, though I did use all of the rev range at times! Wanted more power, sure. But needed? Nope. It’s a tractable enough little engine and pulls reasonably well in all gears as long as you’re doing more than 2k rpm. Perhaps a bit busy on the motorway, but not uncomfortably so. And I averaged 46 mpg :)

Hi matt. Both tdis have turbos just the 90 has a variable vane type. The A2 does take some getting used to with it's big a pillars. So i would recommend a thorough test drive in whatever model/ engine type you decide to go for. The sport has more of a harsh ride than the se. - 20mm lower suspension and 17" wheels doesn't help. But they look soo nice on the A2.(the 17" rs4 wheels)
Good luck

Hi and welcome,
I have got both 1.6 fsi and 75hp Tdi, l've had petrol one for 18 months without any problems (hope I'm not tempting fate) covering approx 7k miles, absolutely love it, I changed the 17" wheels for 15", much smoother ride, I get approx 52mpg on a run and 40 around town. I have only owned the Tdi for a couple of weeks covered approx 700 miles With an average of 64mpg, very happy so far, but I still think fsi has the edge.
My advice is look around but definately buy one they are amazing versatile Little cars.
This is the most helpful forum I have been on. Good luck

Hi @stevec good thing that you've mentioned the Sport model sits 20mm lower. I quite often find myself in weird places in Northumerland and a bit bigger ground clearance would be more useful. Cheers

Yes, this forum is really something else! I can't wait to get A2 and then look for an excuse to go to a A2 meet e.g. some day in August in Wales and meet some of you down there :)

Audi's in the Park should have a good turn out as it's the 10th year I believe, and it's in August (it's on the forum calendar/socials section)

If it's like last year there will likely be every colour/engine option on the club stand :)

I should also have said, if you don't need 5 Seats then the way to go for versatility is definately a 4 seat version as rear seats come out individually like a suitcase and easy for 1 personally to manage giving plenty of load space.
Also try to go for one with fsh.

Matt, I'm in Kirkby Stephen if you want to see an A2 in real life - not too far away, could meet you halfway somewhere. Mine's a TDi75 which has the Depronman remap, now on 235,000 miles, usually better than 65mpg as well.

Hi Trevor, how nice someone lives "near by"! (I hope there's more forum members from the North). :)
I'm up for a meet but currently with limited access to motor vehicle so not sure when I could commit to that. I'm going to see that A2 FSI this Friday and hopefully it's good enough and cheap and then it'll be mine haha

As you've probably read already, the FSI does seem to be a bit fragile. There's often a thread here on the forum if someone sees a nice one for sale so don't panic if you miss out on this one.
Shame you missed the social event last weekend at York - 19 A2s there of all colours and descriptions - good event.

Hi all

Just a quick update on A2....

I did NOT get it! :(

The car was at local auction centre. Me being relatively new to auctions.. I somehow hoped for a "cheaper" motor vehicle being it auction etc.

Car sold for £650 (+ admin fees) so altogether around £900.

It looked "lemons" so it's brave soul whoever the dealer who bought it is.

I am yet to see the car somewhere for sale. Seems like it disappeared out of planet earth.

Since then... I test driven other "dream cars" but either too expensive or lemon cars.

Not many A2 around NE at the moment and I don't have time to travel.

Bought a cheap Subaru (what could go wrong!) meanwhile and keeping cash for that "moment" when it comes.
