Today I.....

Easy DIY job with that tool then? Did you also change the waterpump

Today I .........

Had a brilliant idea (which is quite rare for me).

I like my "new" silver Votex TDI but as many of you know, I do like my extras / options and toys on an A2.
But since funds are tight I had to buy something that had a few nice options but then not as many as I wanted.

The brilliant idea was that I had come up with a way to get a car with the spec I want and for NO COST!!!

The car has
Twist heated leather,
BOSE,
Double DIN
DIS
MFSW
Headlamp washers
4 electric windows
17"alloys,
94K miles
A TDI 90 !!! (with a new DMF and clutch just over a year ago)
Full service history
Hands free kit
Rear Cupholders
etc.

Where did I find this Gem and how come it is NO COST?

Simples, it is my wife's car (non factory white)

She is happy enough with the deal too because the silver one has parking sensors and she is the first to admit that she doesn't bother with any of the "toys".

The Votex body kit will be swapped over from the silver to the white one (the white one already has a rear Votex style spoiler, one of mine)

I will swap the wheels from the White one to the silver one (she has the S3 Avus wheels on hers currently) The black superlight alloys from the silver one are advertised for sale on here already.

My white one with be shod with the QTs from the Castle Red FSI.
They are currently being refurbed, the chrome rims are not in great condition and so I will remove them and have the rims diamond cut (as on the last time I had a set of QTs refurbed), BUT (and it is a very big BUT) much as I have always said that black wheels "don't really do it for me" these are going to be done in gloss black (to match the black roof etc. on the car). I will be replacing the bolts (all 20 per wheel) with new shiny ones (they are metal even though these wheels are not really split rim wheels) So the contrast of the shiny bolts and polished rim against the black (on a white car) MIGHT look ok, we will see.

But I am now back behind the wheel of a well specced white A2.

The only real mod I have planned is an RNSE MK2 with factory Bluetooth and Voice recognition.

So my wife is happy and I am REALLY happy, a pretty good idea I think!!!

I think you owe Mrs B a lovely Birthday/Christmas present this year along with a regular bunch of flowers :)

Put up with poor aircon for too long decided to have it serviced. Halfords do a free air con check. They checked it and luckily it just needed regassing. 1.5hrs later. Ice cold now.
Hi, just want to ask how much was the re gas of the air con

our local wilco motorists discount store has the proper machine it costs £30 as they done mine a while back , checks the system with dye or something and then regases and oils added i think which seemed a fair price to me

Thanks for the info Jigsaw, mine is a must do as mine I think need's re gassing.
This might be s silly question, but I have no manual for my A2 so I'm not sure what settings to press to start the air con.
I have mess about with the climate control, and set it to low temp with full blow, with the windows up and OSS shut. Is this right to start the air con ?
I have looked on here and YouTube but can not find a diagram, or video to explain how it works.

£30 seems an excellent price for an aircon regas/service
Halfords charged me £59 for an aircon regass and an antibacterial clean. Same procedure as wilco, they plugged a machine into aircon system on car and it did all the work.

If econ light is on, on climate control panel, aircon is off. I usually have mine on 21.5 degrees and auto. But to test aircon, turn off econ light and select lo temperature on climate panel in auto. Should be very chilly.

Thanks Stevec; ,
As suspected my Air con needs a re gas. I have just sat in the car and it's cold but not freezing. Will get it re gassed on Friday.

If the aircon is doing something (but not all it should) it can also be a sensor, G2xx I can't remember the numbers were the xx is the sensor lives in the aircon unit in the A2 cabin and it is a ****** to change on the RH drive cars, MUCH easier on the LH drive cars. From what I understand the failed G2xx sensor puts the aircon into a sort of limp mode so it works but at no where near full efficiency

I could also be in need of a re gas :)

cheers

Depronman it's never easy with the A2, that's why there unique

What i have noticed since i had aircon regassed, the radiator cooling fan is running at reduced speed with aircon on(which i believe is correct). Before with aircon turned on radiator fan would not run and aircon not cold.
Think with high pressure sensor gone you cannot turn econ off?? Not sure on internal sensor

This is all hearsay, but I THINK that the following is what happens.

The ECON button (or so I have been told) does not affect the Air Con at all, but instead it only switches off the coolant pre heater (the Webasto or electric version on later cars)

If the pressure drops, the aircon effectively stops the pump and fan from working (If there is no gas, there is no lubrication for the pump and it would destroy the seals on the pump if it were to keep running when dry.

I can only assume that it also turns off the electric fan and just operates it as normal when the coolant temperature dictates it.

I am more than happy to be corrected because I have heard differing versions of what the ECON button does, but on balance it really does sound like it has no connection to Air Con (the fact that a "non-aircon" car also has an ECON button on some years, perhaps bears this out?).

Cheepest in Lincoln is £35.00, but they did a free scan for me today .

Just consulted A2 owner's manual and it states that in econ mode the air cooling system is turned off, and heating/ventillation are regulated automatically. Fuel is saved by turning off the compressor which operates the air cooling system. Along with the supplementary heater (webasto) is also turned off in econ mode.
On an audi a4 with climate i used to own you could hear the compressor clutch engage/disengage when econ button was pressed. No noise comes from the a2 so i would assume it runs continually?

Yes, the aircon compressor runs continuously but it's a variable displacement unit and just works hard enough to maintain the selected cabin temperature. Think I read that when its 'off' the pump is still working at 3% capacity but overall this design gives a significant saving when compared to the old 'on-off' units with a magnetic clutch.
There should also be no problem with the compressor seals drying out due to lack of running when some owners switched the aircon off for long periods of time

Cheers Spike
