Today I.....

I think mine are in a similar state & have obtained replacements but I’m still battling the rain to get my cylinder head off to assess damage after cambelt failure.

The first wheel took about 2 hours, the second took 15 mins. The difference is explained by my stupidity.
I removed the arch liner to get to the suspension strut bolts - totally failing to notice the single bolt at the bottom.
I then found it’s a 16mm on each side but my sockets are 15-17. I did realise my spark plug socket was 16mm and used a flare spanner on the nut.
Actually taking off the shock bottom bolt, pulling the spring off, cleaning it up and sticking the rubber bits in took 10minutes each side!
At least I know how to remove the liner for my next job - shocks and bump stop. Where do people get the new stretch bolts etc?

Today I tried to buy the simple orange bump stop which fits at the top of the front suspension leg from Wakefield Audi. It's available on back order which may mean weeks for delivery. It could just show how even the simplest 8Z0 part numbers are getting quite rare now. I ended up buying one on ebay from Deutchaparts with a three day delivery.

Today I call into WOM Autos , not for Basil but to get my A7 serviced a big thanks to Marcus and Rob , the BITDI was jacked onto the 2 post lifts, and was exposed for all to see , so off with the huge amount of plastic shields , trims and other stuff , drowned the underside in WAXOIL , cleaned and put back together under the watchful eye of Marcus

Also had a look over a very sad looking TANK belonging to Mike , and got brake envy....

On the a2 front .... picked up a new 70 ah battery for Basil , fitted my new to me mud flaps , and winglets to the front

Went off for a play in Basil, and the remap appears to work well... he is now rather quick and very keen to rev ! Looking forward to getting him fully run in

Bad light stoped play so fitting the battery and photos will have to wait , photos to follow .

Project Resurgam ... ticked the next item on my list and refurbished the starter motor.

It's a Bosch Unit 02T911023G and has served well for 190 000 miles, I stripped it down two years ago and give it a good clean but recently had started that really annoying squeal again.

1. Stripped down and checked continuity on the armature field coils with an ohmmeter ... all okay

Today ...... I fitted my £6.59 Ebay 'hub caps' to replace the rather shabby ones it came with.
These caps have an Audi logo / part number / the word Germany on them - but I am struggling to believe that, at £6.59 retail for 4 they can be anything other than Chinese copies!?P1050545.JPGP1050546.JPGP1050547.JPGP1050548.JPG

Today I ...
Refitted my overhauled starter motor, motor was tested on the bench yesterday, all the tools were laid out and ready to go and took about an hour to do.
The job seems overly complicated in the manual but I have managed twice now by undoing the 13mm nut and lifting the gear change counter weight off the spline to gain access and remove the upper starter motor bolt.
Starts up and runs ... the screech is gone for another while ... result.
Next job is to reassemble the rear suspension and hub brakes.

My wife’s 63 plate polo rear screen broke one night & the only glass left intact was the label made in China, for a car assembled in South Africa! Before being shipped to the UK main dealers.
I bought 4 for our Tiguan & they are identical to the ones fitted!
Do they do A2 centre caps?
Keith.

Tomscar. That’s a wonderful how to and thank you for the pictorial guide.

Would you maybe consider starting your own thread with this and other refurb projects in it so people can find this in the future?

Hi Pinkythelabrat ... that sounds like a plan, I have taken loads of photos over the last few weeks, I will try and put together a 'how too' for the starter motor and put it in that section ... all the best, Tom :)

What an excellent post, backed up by brilliant photos. Thank you! :) Do you know if the Bosch part numbers you've shown are also valid for the TDi (AMF)?

Hi TFG ...
Thank you for the compliments ... I don't know for sure but have a look in the link below, the starter and solenoid looks to be universal across the range (apart from the letter suffix) and the armature is definitely the same so can't think why they would need to have different brushes ... sorry I can't be more specific, I had the luxury of having mine stripped down to get the part numbers.

http://www.oemepc.com/audi/part_sin.../911/subcategory/911010/part_id/258793/lang/e

If it helps I can message you directly with links to where I bought the parts, not sure if I can post this information on the forum.

Apologies in advance if I'm breaking the posting rules but I will delete the links if necessary, the listings will have ended by now but you should find similar:
