Today I.....

fitted the new fuel flap switch. Which didnt open the flap. I now realise the DIS doesnt show the drivers door open so wont power the door.....
Is there a work around to supply power to the flap switch (is it 12v at the switch or neg switching?) or is it remove the door lock and fix the microswitch?
Never had a small car have so many little issues! I suppose it goes with owners running them on a shoestring and leaving faults due to cost...

Fix the door lock. May be the micro switch but more likely the solder joints need re flowing
I posted a thread on this on A2OC some months or years ago
Cheers

Merlin 3046 - love the paint story!!

Andrew - well in daylight I there is a small difference - see pic.

I changed over 5 buttons and left the others in situ.

You can tell which ones?

Looks quite tidy now, a massive upgrade on the appearance before I imagine.

Yes, I think I can tell the A4 buttons, top left window de-mist, both large +-, circular arrow recycle, and OFF, but it's a trivial difference.

Andy - thought I might catch you out on the top left widow de-mist but clearly you are better than that :). 5/5

Seriously though I have seen some where the replacement buttons stand out a mile. These don't even with a 'flash' photo, so well pleased.

The donor unit was 8D0 820 O43M. 04/00 manufacturing date

Actually one of the funny things about these soft touch buttons is that they tell you exactly how the previous owner (s) used the climate control.

Nearly everyone turns the fan and temp up and down. The side buttons often barely get touched. And then I came across one unit on eBay with perfect buttons for all except a destroyed Off button. So clearly that driver relied on natural ventilation.

Anyhow - back on topic today I pressure washed the rear underside - using my newly acquired plastic ramps. What is it they say about small things pleasing small minds...…….P1050591.JPG

@Jellybean did you use the correct air bag wiring loom? I had to use a different loom when I changed from SE to sports steering wheel. You did disconnect the battery and leave for a good period of time before you disconnected the air bag?

I used the loom that was with the wheel when bought. Will disconnect again and leave longer tomorrow.
Connectors n cables are the same on the SE wheel removed and the TT wheel I fitted.
May pop to local garage to get it cleared if this doesnt work. He owes me a favour!

Unfortunately, if you have the wrong air bag loom and power on again the computer does not see the air bag and lights the warning on the dash. You may find even with the correct ( and I am not saying it is wrong ) loom fitted you may need diagnostics to clear the warning. As I said I changed the loom before I fitted the sport wheel and have had no air bag warning light issues.

@Vantagemech The drivers door lock microswitch issue is a well know pita on all VAG group cars. The particular microswitch in your case is the door open switch and it is located at the very rear of the door lock below the pawl that latches the lock. These switches tend to fill up with crap and over oiling which fills up the area under the pawl and then stops the switch from working. SOMETIMES you can clean it in situ but usually it is a door lock out job, not difficult but time consuming and it does look quite scary when the whole of the drivers door has the upper glass surround removed to give you access to the lock. Not many tools needed and very do-able. Have a think then work out if you are going to take apart and try to fix or just swap a replacement lock straight in. Here is a picture of the lock and the door open microswitch is behind the little clip attached to the blue and red wires, the pawl can be seen at the top of the rectangular cut out. Rotate the image by 90 clockwise and that is how it locates in the door.

I can confirm that once the air bag light is on, it will stay on until reset in the ecu even if the correct loom is fitted

Removed the lock to inspect the micro switch............
and the end had fell off..

So, with the car in bits over the drive / lawn I started to rummage through the various boxes of lucky nuts and bolts. I finally came across some old plastic sticks - used for bumper welding that were stiff but could be whittled into a makeshift button.
So after 2 or 3 attempts (the bottom is soo thin!) I got it somewhere right, fitted the control unit into the loom and tested Bingo, the light came on/went out and the fuel flap now opens.
Happier knowing its the switch and next time it wont take me 45 mins to strip.
Many thanks to those that gave the advice.

......fitted a CD Box for single DIN.
After 3 years searching for the correct Fischer CD Box (4 CD drawers) for an A2 I gave up and decided to try modifying an existing one. Looking at the Kia Sorento 2002-2006 ones often seen on ebay, I thought it worth a try.
KIA Fischer CD Box.jpg4 CD Box in single DIN.jpg
The upper frame of the KIA box was cut off, and the front panel reduced in width (hacksaw cut) by about 1mm each side. The A2 plastic storage cubby fascia was removed. The CD Box can then be inserted (from behind) into the fascia (no modification of this part). I fitted 2 self tapping screws underneath to hold it in place (hidden behind the fascia). The fascia and CD box assembly was then refitted. The storage cubby itself (the fuzzy finish bit) can be left in place.
I think the result is OK, although it is obviously not an OE part because of the colour difference (which is actually more noticeable in the photo). Just hope the CD player keeps working, after several years unused!

Today I am wondering what I could use to restore 'yellowed' door trim? The bottom part of both passenger side trims has discoloured - I assume because the car has been parked in a certain place and the sun has been on that side through the OSS?
Has anyone had the same issue and successfully treated? The trim is Platinum.P1050593.JPG

That's a very good use for the single-DIN cubby. I find it almost useless on my car, anything I put in there falls out again a few miles later!
