Today I.....

I agreed the sale on my previous pride and joy this week too. It goes to a racing driver with a collection of thoroughbred classics.

The resultant handsome sum will be mostly used to fund a house purchase, however a small piece will be used to complete the upgrade of Audrey to my spec - Colour DIS, SideGuard, a nice steering wheel, Bluetooth and the colour change of the heated sports leathers from swing grey to platinum.

Now that is a proper BMW

Yes it’s been a 13 year passionate fling that has run it’s course - like all beautiful mistresses, she has been very high maintenance and expensive, and also totally impractical / incompatible with children ?

I had deluded myself that my boys and I might in time find the opportunities to enjoy trips out, but with the arrival of baby no. 3 that dream has finally been shattered for good as totally unrealistic.

At least the A2 as a toy remains eminently practical! And a house is far more useful!

I feel your pain, when a relationship has come to an end!
Today I renewed the licence for my 1965 classic ‘mistress’. The wife approves of her so how could I not. ‘She’ however is not a car,.......

Today I...... finally got round to changing the fuel filter, which I'd not done when I serviced the car in the autumn. The instructions here were excellent and it all came apart easily. I reassembled with one of @depronman 's metal drain screws, which fitted beautifully and should avoid any problems in the future. The old filter had a '15 date mark, so had probably done 5 years and 50k miles on the car - certainly time for a change:

They do get forgotten about. Out of sight out of mind

So many running problems are sorted with a change of fuel filter

Today I’m all ready to change my FSI’s serpentine belt tensioner pulley (old one is rumbling loudly, the bearing has had it), but really scratching my head how to do it. Car is up on ramps, the under-tray off, the serpentine belt off. Audi service manual (Elsawin) is little help, unusually. Do I really have to extract the alternator first?
If this was my TDI I’d have had the whole job done in 15 minutes.
Thanks in advance
Matt

Ok, job done. Alternator removal is not the way to go. Instead I removed the aircon compressor, leaving the hoses attached and hanging it up with washing line so as not to strain them. It may be possible to change the tensioner without this step, but IMO it is worth the time invested to be able to see roughly where your socket and extension are going. There is a 13mm bolt which lives down a hole in the back of the console casting for the alternator and aircon compressor. This bolt goes into the back of the tensioner. You have to find a socket and extension of the right length as the exhaust cat and dipstick tubes are in the way.
It is much easier to remove the old tensioner if you fully tension it and insert a 3mm bar or shorted nail to through the aligned holes to lock it first.
13mm spanner or socket on the compressor mounting bolts, 16mm spanner on the tensioner bolt to push clockwise against the spring and allow the belt to be released. I couldn’t find a torque spec for the tensioner so I defaulted to NQFT (Not Quite F. Tight)

Today I finally got my A2 TDI back on it's wheels following the extensive suspension and brake overhaul. I went with Bilstein B3 springs and Monroe OE Spectrum Shocks, I am very happy with the ride comfort after a short test drive. No chance to test the handling much as it has also had brand new brakes all around so didn't want to be cooking them before they are bedded in. Also happy to say that the front and rear of the car are at the same height with this spring and shock combination. The biggest thing I noticed so far is the new engine mounts, everything is so much quieter and moving slowly is so much easier.

The full list of work:
  • New springs (Bilstein B3)
  • New shocks (Monroe OE Spectrum)
  • New strut top bearings
  • Meyle HD droplinks and ARB bushings
  • New gearbox mount and pendulum mount
  • New wishbones and console bushings (this was a hateful task and delayed the project by a week as the bolt for the anti roll bar bracket had welded itself to the console bracket so needed a new one of them!)
  • Changed gearbox oil
  • New front calipers, rotors and pads
  • New rear drums, shoes and pistons
  • New brake lines on rear axle
  • So many new bolts
  • Refurbished aero wiper curtesy of depronman
I leave you all with a picture of a what 156k miles and 18 years does to a gearbox mount, yes those are pieces of bushing material not rodent droppings...

Went to a main dealers to get a coolant bottle and a new key today. Lady came back saying the techs had all gathered as they dont really see 2's any more and were gobsmacked at the condition of it. Nice to hear!
How much was the coolant bottle?
