Today I.....

Today I celebrated the official first day of spring by swapping the standard 15” alloys with my winter tyres to the set of pepper pots with the Dunlop BluResponse summer tyres - hopefully we don’t get a surprise end of season cold snap!

I am however an idiot: in my ham-fisted rush to swap the wheels before it got dark I couldn’t work out how to use the bent piece of wire to pull out the centre caps - so I tapped them out from behind instead. However they were all stuck pretty fast, so one of them now sports a crack. It’s invisible unless you stoop down and look, but I can’t tell you how pi55ed off with myself I am for it.

@Vanders - I don’t suppose you have any of those new ones I sold you that you don’t need?!

I have a long trip from Honiton to Berkshire and then on to Coventry and back down the M5 home again next Saturday so further preparation plans to crack the 60 mpg barrier for the trip at a 70mph cruise speed include checking the tyre pressures are at full load maximum, removing the rear seats and treating it to a double dose of millers diesel fuel additive to kick-start the fuel system clean I’ve managed to convince myself Audrey would benefit from during the course of the day‘s drive of 400 miles and 7 1/2 hours (according to google).

My brother in law who Audrey is on loan to has promised to fully valet the car inside and out before then. We will see as to what extent that actually happens! May end up doing it myself.

As an aside, I checked the oil and despite the car only having done a couple of thousand miles since it’s last oil change, the oil is very black compared with that of the Touran, which has done twice the mileage. I will change the oil myself when the weather is warmer to clear the engine out.

Today, well, over the weekend I /we, thanks Tom got the Bluetooth upgrade sorted out.

Yip, it's wedged in with soft foam underneath and bumper wrap, (has Tom calls it) around it temporally till I can get the proper holder.
When first connected up VCDS could not find it so we assumed it was FUBAR so late last night I pull the trigger and bought another.
I was also having problems with the microphone, it did not work but a message to the seller and he said it was plugged into the wrong plug, it was only then that I found another on the quad lock cable that had been taped over.
Anyway, Tom told me over video call which code numbers to put into VCDS so at least the unit was ready for a replacement Bluetooth module.
I actually took everything out of the car ready to bin the module but this morning I thought I would have another go with what I had, tried the mic ? but again no joy, but just out of curiosity, I plugged the cable in the module and the mic started working, whoop whoop, then I decided to see if VCDS would find the Bluetooth module, and it did, double whoop whoop.
Thing is, I had messaged the seller of the module and he gave me a full refund, so now I will have two when the other arrives, but my thinking is, if this one decides to play up, I will at least have a replacement in the garage.

I would be delighted to take it off your hands in the event you didn’t feel to have a need for the spare. I’ve an up and coming R-NSE install which would definitely benefit from it. Other option is do you have the sellers details?

Evening John,

Always a pleasure to assist. I’m glad you’re making the most of the RNS-E.

Happy this worked out over the phone, would of course be much easier in person as diagnosing faults would be so much quicker. Once COVID doesn’t become as issue we would still have geography to overcome.

WhatsApp video call works great right now though. What’s next on the list that I can help out with.

Kind regards,

Tom

Today I learned that my TDI has headlight washers. Can't believe that I've owned it for 9 months and not realised...

It's probably got the winter pack, heated wing mirrors and heated windscreen washers
I knew it had heated mirrors but I just assumed that at this stage in its life a previous owner had installed them, will check if it has heated washer nozzles. I only noticed it had them because I had to drain the washer bottle and I noticed that it took a lot more to fill up compared with my FSI. I have gotten used to more modern cars which have the blanking plates over the headlight washer hole in the bumper regardless of whether they are fitted so assumed A2s were the same

Today I sorted The issues Jelly failed it's mot on.
1. Offside side lamp dim. Took out led and replaced with yellow looking std bulb.
2. Offside headlamp motor not working. Replaced fuse.
3. Airbag Light on. Plugged in the roof sensor module and cancelled warning. Module had been removed with the headlining.
So other bits...
found nearside headlamp upper mount snapped. Superglue, then hot stapled with 2 staples.
As the headlining is out I decided to fit sound deadening mat. Its 2mm thick so hoping this doesn't impact on the headlining when replaced. At least when the roof is tapped there's just a dull thud now!
Just headlining fittings and re-cover the A and D pillar trims, plus the sun visors. Then fingers crossed it all fits back together!

I'd be interested to understand whether there's a perceptible difference in road noise after that insulation job. Always wonder whether the roof promotes noise in our cars.

Will post results, but at least doesn't ring like a bare roof. Should make hailstones quieter.
It's on a Tdi, so plenty of noise from the engine!

Did you fit sound deadening mats to your doors and bottom as well? I did and it made significant difference. Also tdi here, I only still have to replace gearbox to 6- speed ??

Do you have any details - what you bought, where exactly you fitted them (i.e. what did you attach them to) and how you attached them?
