Today I.....

Hi Alan,

They were about 34 euros per side from Audi Tradition which I thought was reasonable, plus shipping of course. I asked Tom at Crewe Audi and they are no longer available. Thanks to the amazing kindness of @Rickmeister, I was able to get them ordered and shipped to the UK.

Take note of what I’ve said above, either @timmus skills and wiring modification will be required or a cut put in the new ones in order to install them.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,

Darren

Hi Darren. Are the rear channels easy to source and what sort of price are they? The top end of my channels are getting a bit yukky. Thanks, Alan

Strangely enough I had a very similar experience a little while before you Darren :D

Great to meet you today Drew and thanks for delivering my heated washer jets. Hopefully see you at again AITP in August ?
Was a pleasure to meet you both. I paid for my AITP XII ticket this morning. And put some new tyres on the pepper pots so I can get the RS4’s refurbished. Looking forward to seeing you all on the 8th of August.

Excellent, it'll be great to see you again there Drew ?

Tuesday I replaced L/H controlarm after I discovered a pretty big corroded gap on top of it.
Nil time to replace both sides with cast/forged items and I'm still playing with the idea of replacing the subframe with a PQ25.......... Luckily a spare steel pressed one (as good as new) was stil wandering in the shed.

Today R/H CV joint was in need of replacement. Cover was torn and noise was present now and then.

Today I collected another A2. Its an FSI with an added 6th gear, and is in Kingfisher Blue, a special order I believe.
Does anyone know of another A2 in this colour?
It needs some tlc, and a few things addressing, mainly drivers seat wear and non opening OSS oh, and wheels will probably be changed. All to be dealt with in due course, as will the fitment of a set of Votex Skirts!
Thinking about selling Spud, but need to decide what spec will be!

I very much stand to be corrected Bob, but I'm fairly certain that this unique and well-equipped FSI has made its way from MK to you, whether directly or not. It must surely be Petra's car, wife of Tony Foscolos (A2 Cars), Tony who sadly passed away after battling with illness in 2018. Petra is @Smurf on here, but hasn't been on for nearing 18 months.

It is a beauty and one of a kind. Pleased it has found a good home with you, a fellow enthusiast.

Very interesting one Bob, good find! Is it a longer 6th or 6 gears in within the ratios of the original 5? I'm sure it will end up completely stunning after your planned upgrades :)

Thanks guys. Yes, collected from Petra today and driven home. Really enjoyable, and my first time on "sensible" sized wheels, giving a nice smooth ride.
Intention is for it to be a keeper, but it will be used and not locked away. No garage yet anyway!

Ian Its the standard gearbox with an extra 6th gear giving a lower ratio, above 5th. Will need to work out the ratios and compare to those in Spud.

I'd have said hello if I'd known.

Enjoy your new acquisition.

How did you find getting the old arm out of the Bush?

How did you find getting the old arm out of the Bush?
I liked doing it........

Mind you, it's not the first time (this is my 3rd A2) and it helps to have some suitable and useful tooling/equipment.

This is used to lever the old arm out of the bushing;

Still needs some muscle power and a breaker bar to keep the front side clear. It's almost funny; it took me 10min to get it out, I was timing it........
Get it back in is more of a challenge, but some DC4 silicone compound (helping a lot) and swearing (not helping.......) did the job.

Yes, next time I will ask my son to make a Tiktok or YouTube clip (ofcourse it's jinxed now......?).

Today it was time to get rid of the squishy things called springs and shockabsorbers on the front.
Found a Weitec coil over set from an Ibiza.
Because I wanted to try a coiloverset to see if it could suit me it looked like a good idea to go for a used one.
Ofcourse new top bearings went on.

The ride is alright, didn't do many miles with it yet. A tad softer then my AMF with Bilstein B8, then again the AMF is on 16" rims and the ATL on 15", which will be swapped to 16" too in the near future.

So do you bar the arm where it enters the rear Bush against the Bush housing of the console?

Do you reuse the same console bush?

Is it a hammer job (with lube) to refit the arm?

@Menno
I havent really understood the benefits of coilovers. Not saying it is bad, just interested to hear if anyone has any ideas of why. Also original are a sort of coilovers as the coiled spring is concentric to the damper , right?

Me neither..... At least one benefit is one can adjust ride height/stance.
Because I wanted to feel how a adjustable set is riding, well, what can you do? Just fit one.

I'm also not saying it's good or bad, in the past it felt like it was for "boy racers" who wanted to go as low as possible.
Another benefit "springs" ? to mind; maybe these springs are not so prone to breaking?

I just going to drive it for a while and see how they'll suit. At least they are not bouncy, it surprises me.

Yes, the fork slides in between the arm and the console bush. Rock it back and forth til it slides out little by little.

Console bush is left well alone if it's in good condition. Replaced a console bush once, didn't like it but maybe because the tool I bought for it didn't fit perfect.

No hammer; the arm will bounce back against the console rubber bush. A big clamp and some lubrication. Do not use oil or lubricant which will deteriorate rubber.

I think you may well find the colour is unique for an A2 in the UK. When I visited A2Cars back in early 2017 I remember seeing the car high on a lift minus the rear axle and young Tom, the apprentice mechanic, commenting it was a unique colour which is why Tony had bought it (for Petra).

I

That could be true.
A while ago, one of the car mags suggested one of the reasons why 'old' springs never broke was because the ends were ground flat and the spring seats were also flat and dead 'square' to the strut.

Later spring ends just follow the coil spiral. The spring seats generally don't match the spiral form very accurately so the end coils are more stressed when the spring is compressed, making failures very common.

Coilovers have the good old ground spring ends and flat spring seats, giving them an easier and probably longer life. (Not sure about the driver though)

Cheers Spike
