Today I.....

For the first time in a long time, I found a small window and gave the A2 a bit of a decent run today. Sun shining, day off work, OSS open, country lanes and a real opportunity to put the engine and box through its paces. All of the above equated to great fun. It's been so long, I almost forgot how silky smooth the petrol gearboxes are, still a knife through butter experience to me.

Despite being covered in Sahara sand, she still looked smart enough, so I managed some snaps. Not long after I came across a burst pipe on the road and she's now covered in mud too. Small price to pay for the enjoyment factor and sitting in this great cockpit of a car.

Great to hear your positive vibes again Darren.
How about something different for Stanford Hall...... leave it dirty?

Today I...

Returned to the forum for the first time in a few months after an unplanned sabbatical. I've been struggling with motivation, been busy with work, and at a low ebb in some respects. COVID has taken its toll and the world in which we live has shown again how volatile it can be with the plight of those in Ukraine.

After contemplating selling my A2, partly down to my mindset, the last wash has rekindled some much needed positivity toward the car. Hoping to be a bit more frequent and engaged again now.

I hope everyone is keeping safe and well in all areas of life.

All the best,

Darren

Glad you decided against selling her mate , she would be almost impossible to replace and how would those of us who enjoy your posts do without some spectacular FSI something or other going on from you! It's been a difficult time for a lot of people Darren, i've been very surprised how deeply it has affected some close friends of mine, so fully understand how it's affected many. Chin up mate, spring is on it's way and i'm sure i speak for many that i look forward to more FSI photos, general cleaning / fettling from you! :);)

There i was talking about you posting a few FSI pics and now this - brilliant!!

Good to hear from you Mark. Hope you and the family are all well. You are right of course, there’s a lot of me in that car now, it would be hard to part with her.

I hope that you will be making a social or two this year. Be good to catch up. Thanks for your kind words too, very kind of you.

Sorry, I’m missing 3 from the photo! I just require another three so there’s enough for each set of wheels before advertising them in the market

Took off the winter wheels from Cosmo (@lvsghost ) .. and fitted the refurbished 17" Ronals I obtained from @A2Steve last summer - I hadn't realised that straight out of the box they would have the perfect offset to fill the arches nicely without the need for spacers. I'm not lowering the car as the roads around here are ropey, but the ride height doesn't look excessive. Very happy with the way these have turned out.

One question for those who know what they're talking about rather more than me : went out for a wee test drive and there was a rubbing noise from the driver side wheel that changes when the brake pedal is pressed - close examination suggests that the centre of the inner edge of both standard Mintex brake pads are making slight contact with the innermost 2mm of the rim casting which is maybe 2-3mm larger overall diameter than the equivalent on 16" SE rims. On my other half's car there is around a 1mm gap between pad and the alloy. Are all pads exactly the same dimensions or are there any that would fit the FSIII caliper that are maybe slightly slimmer in this area and wouldn't make contact? Conversely, if I take the rim off again, would sanding or filing a chamfer into that part of the pad to take off the edge making contact be an acceptable solution?

I don’t even remember selling those lol. Glad you are happy with the way they look. As for the contact, that can happen with some pads on the S2 wheels, and you’ve given the best solution already, take a few mm off the edge of the metal of the pad.

Thanks to @A2Steve, @2work & @Hef for continuing my obsetion, Steve and Hef for sorting out the additional material which matches my headlining and Tom for his detailed instructions on dismantling and recovering the sun visors. Just the drivers side to do.

Evening David,

You're most welcome Sir. By the looks of it you have done a fantastic job there. Looks spot on. Really glad the quick 'How To' has been of use. Good luck with the other side.

Kind regards,

Tom

Did some general maintenance on my friends 1.4 petrol car. Oil, oil and air filter changed. Hard touch plastics fitted to climate unit. Door check strap changed, cracked speaker grill replaced, mud flaps fitted. My own car will be taking the huff with me feeling unloved.
