Today I.....

Just when I'd finished changing the G62 coolant sensor, 4th time the charm hopefully, expecially when this one cost £50+, when I'd noticed, one of the fan belt pullies wooble a bit too much.
The belts had been changed 6 months ago, I assume this isn't normal? None of the pullies feel loose, no whining noise either, by touch all 4 sit tight. The nut on the shaking pulley looks rusty, I'm not sure if it'd been removed at all.
Shall I go back to the garage? Soon I gotta drive a lot, so I don't wanna risk it of course. Thanks a alot.View attachment 103732
I would agree it should locate on a peg & the hole at 3 o’clock looks empty!

So that hole not suppose to be empty??
@Sylvester when was the cam belt last changed? I would take it to the garage and let them check it over and refit the bottom pulley correctly.

@Sylvester I think your bottom pulley needs replacing unless not fitted correctly.
Thanks, I don't think they had even touched it, as the bolt on the pulley is very rusty.
I'm driving back tomorrow after work, cheers guys.

Doug sounds more like a tank and poor mpg 50+. Looked underneath front flexi leaking and also excessive engine movement on start up. Looks like new dog bone mount required and a trip to longlife for a new flexi!

The one has killed the other by the sounds of it Steve.

Hi, could you send me a picture/part number, what supposed to be in that hole? I'm going away on Friday and could only manage to book in for Thursday, so I'll try to find that part just to get ahead of possible issues. Thanks

Well hooray

Finally got my A2 through its MOT. The tester was at last receptive to the dose of Cataclean and a proper thrash to get things properly hot idea and ta da it passed.

At fast idle the CO was 0.02 (max limit 0.2) with HC at 2ppm (max limit 200), lambda at 1.009 so all good

Many thanks to all for advice posted, you were all spot on. I’m a bit cross with myself for not having picked up on this trick but hey ho, every day is a learning day. Also have an NGK post cat lambda on its way as a plan b item, but thats life, and I’m back on the road

Many thanks again

J

Yep, cataclean works wonders :)

...did yet another tandem pump, easier second time. Cleaned the grime off and got away with out any issues. Phew such a tense but of maintenance. Old pump had no gasket just rubber seal inlayed into pump.

Quite like the old amf vs atl, very slow though. Kind of honest machine feel.

I've yet to do this on the white 54 plate TDI.
I've got the pump and new gasket but yet to get the extension from Paul
No mad rush so waiting for warmer weather.
It does start but if facing downhill or left flat its a b****r to start.
So Paul, I will be in contact.

So I took the car back to the garage, that did the belts 6 months ago. They said they're too busy, so I'd take my car to another garage . I was like no. I'm gonna get this sorted under their 1 years warranty for sure.
I fly out on Friday and they'd booked me in for Thursday...I can already see this is gonna be tough.

The wobbling pulley is the one, which suppose to come off during timing belt change. I'm not sure how they did that, as the secure bolt looks rather rusty (image few posts above). It shakes so much, the extra wear on the sides of the new belt is clearly visible.
My question is, could that wooble for 6 months cause issues with the timing system as well, as they're suppose to be connected some ways? Thanks.

@Sylvester
The belt you can see with the wear is the poly-V belt, it drives the alternator and air con compressor and has its own tensioner. Any premature wear is bad, I would be asking them for a new belt as this is down to their poor standards.

The cam belt is accessed after the bottom pulley is removed and the covers then taken off the belt, so unless they have smashed the belt cover there is no way to replace the cam belt without removal, unless of coarse the cam belt was never changed...

Here is a picture that shows the cam belt behind its covers...

The wobble should not have any effect on timing as although both are on the crankshaft the cam runs on it own toothed gear...

P.S. Hope you were not flying with FlyBE....

I would guess the car will not be ready in time for you before you fly. So I would take a nice clear picture of your dash with the engine running showing the fuel quantity and especially the mileage reading. When you collect the car you will be able to see if the car has been used in your absence.

Evening all,

After 2500 miles of commuting in the new daily I finally managed to find time to remove the heavy SE wheels:

To fit the more economical Pepperpots:

I’ve never commuted on 16” wheels before and must say that they’re actually rather comfortable, but happy to be back on the lightweight option with increased comfort.

Kind regards,

Tom

@audifan Thank you for the detailed reply! When I got my A2 back, I'd taken the cambelt cover off and the belts looked new, the pulleys sat tight, so I didn't check them during movement, I was just glad that was done. I'd have, goes to show it's so difficult to find a good garage.
I'm flying with Wizzair, but I need my car as I have to leave at 3am, so I've no other way to get to the airport at that time.
I've been planning this trip for months, if I can't go because the garage has messed up, I won't be happy. All I can do is fingers cross. Cheers.

Today I eventually took off the LUK pump from the white TDI 75.
Apart from struggling pulling the fuel pipes off , the vacuum pump was much easier, it was off in around an hour but I really took my time.
A little tip, I used my heat gun on low to help soften the grip on the fuel pipes.
The very bottom bolt is a bit of a pain to reach but eventually I was able to pull it away from the side of the engine.

It was surprisingly clean on the block but then again the pump wasn't actually leaking any fuel so my guess is it's drawing air into the inside of the pump..

After putting the pumps side by side the difference in depth is or seems to be fractional, I mean maybe 4 or 5mm.
Here's some photos. In no particular order.
