Today I.....

Hi Phil, yip they are powerful but lots of feel too.
I think it might do a “stoppie” in the dry. Childish I know but they are seriously light in comparison with standard calipers. And yes they’re coool!
I got them for my unbirthday, Lol

Have you also got a matching brake reservoir? They sound like a great upgrade!

New tappets and rocker arms

What was failing the two (?) rocker arms? Do you need a new camshaft too?
I replaced all rockers - just didn't have time between rain to photograph....

What was failing? I had a misfire that I "cured" a couple of months ago by resetting the cam housing but I used some quite old hylomar that was lying around. Recently I had a couple of recurrences so I figured I would do a better job and also replace the stuff I could easily access with the head still on.

Camshafts look fine to me.

Today I got back these (images attached) after James @jp.oog worked is magic on them.
The car will never be a show stealer but at least it will be a honest tidy daily. The big chuck of the TLC it needed is now complete with the (cast wishbones & new hubs & half shafts) front and rear suspension & brake rebuilds / renewed including rear axle out and treated and re-bushed.
New tyres on the A3 pepper pots and the OSS exchanged by @Kleynie. Water leaks cured . Cruise control and heated Audi TT seats wired in by @timmus along with a new door check strap, wiper arm & ECU upgrade from @depronman.
All in all what was a car heading towards end of life / scrap now back to a useable vehicle for hopefully years to come.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice on the forum and to the two characters I've not yet mentioned but help us all out @A2Steve & @Clackers.
Cheers Stan

Well not quite today but on Saturday I got my A2 back on the road after 7 months in my garage trying to resolve a gear selection problem - got a replacement tower shifter from Autodoc and a bit of tweaking on the cables and all gears now working again - great to get back driving it :)

Congratulations. Your A2 looks very smart. Must have had some detailing as well as the mechanics. What colour is your A2? I'm not too sure if I've seen a light blue before unless the shine is reflecting the sky!

Just a bit of a wash and a wipe down - it was a £400 scrapper that I saved during lockdown!

The colour is indeed light blue - I think it is officially Crystal blue metallic LY7R

Today I collected my new 60k FSI keeper with quite the spec (only missing headlamp washers and front isofix), plus some OEM+ upgrades that make it the best driving A2 I’ve ever had - Koni FSD, Weitec, H&R ARBs front and rear, a FBMFSW, *and* a snicky six-speed box make it quite the driver’s A2!

En-route home I also managed to pick up (for 100x less than the cost of said A2), a set of Merc W203 roof bars that look to be 100% compatible with an OSS roof. Win!

That sounds like an interesting FSI, they are a lovely thing to drive.
Do you know what gearbox it is? I’ve never heard of an FSI with a six speed.

George

Pics please. We are in a rare cohort for sure. Enjoy

Never heard anyone mention that gearbox before, can I ask what revs the engine is doing at 70 mph in 5th gear?

Cheers

Howey
Hi Howey

Based on the instruments, the engine is spinning at about 2,050rpm at 70mph.

the gearbox is the same family as the JDD. I did some comparisons with standard, JDD, and MWP.

here is the result of my calculations:

And my bigger spreadsheet - speed calcs based on earlier work in the forum for comparison.

What is the logic in changing the ratios, so that at 70 mph, the engine is running low down on the torque and power curves, so that the engine is under far more stress than with the standard box?
At 2,000 rpm, the ECU thinks you're pootling around, in lean burn mode, where the power requirement is low, and the engine temp is high, not bowling down the motorway! Goodness knows how it tries to reconcile that, as with standard ratios, at 70 mph, the flaps would be down, inlet fully open, and engine temperature at the lower 87C ish.
The original gear ratios, and ECU maps, were, I'm sure, carefully chosen to match the engine characteristics to the car, maximising performance, while minimising fuel consumption. The idea that just changing those ratios will improve either, seems to me, to be a little optimistic.
Mac.
