Today I.....

Today I put the low mileage Ebony black Tdi into the drive and started getting it washed and ready for it's MOT in the new year in readiness to get it advertised.

The more and more I look at it the better it gets, I'm probably going to regret selling this one but I've got a few nice ones already plus I need to make space for the next one to save.

Evening Iain,

Looks lovely and sure it’ll sell quickly. I’ve not seen you show a vehicle without a full Votex kit for a while now haha.

Good luck with the inspection and sale Sir.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom,

That one's too nice to retro fit a Votex kit too it's the best A2 I've owned and driven the Audi main dealer service history is pure gold plus I've ran out of spare kits to put onto it anyway 😆

On the plus side I've currently got a brilliant red Tdi sport away getting resprayed and the factory fitted Votex kit that was removed by a previous owner refitted so it's not all bad news.

Thanks,
Iain

I took my old shocks apart, bearing and springs off etc.
It was certainly the right idea to change them, near side had a broken spring, MOT fail anyway, so why wouldn't I?
The nearside has obviously been changed previously (the easy one) as it was a Sachs shock.
The offside (the nightmare) was still the original shock, at 187k mls.
Both were worn out, no piston return, so I'm thinking the ride might be better now, with 2 Sachs shocks and KYB springs on.

(scuse the carpet, that's the garage, not the lounge)

Great work Al,

I’m sure you’ll be impressed with the comfort of the first drive once you’re done. I need to do this on a certain Azure Blue A2 soon, not looking forward to it!

Kind regards.

Tom

Cheers Tom, it's taken me a while, but then it's my first time of tackling it
Luckily bar one wishbone nut all the fixings came apart no problem.
I'm on the home straight now.

@L162LZ how did the subframe swap go?
Just about finished my front end refresh.
Hi, It went OK, my daughters Polo is now back on the road and drives much better thanks, wasn't too bad a job to be honest in the end. All the bolts were kind to me :) Just need some dry days now to tackle some jobs on the A2. Parts are all here just need better weather (no garage space to do it in unfortunately) How did you get on with the offside strut? I assume I'll have to tackle that sometime in the future !!
Cheers Dave

Hi, nearly all back together.
The offside strut is an absolute b****.
Access to the top mount is very tight to say the least, but doable. It's just the amount of bits you have to remove to get in there. Brake fluid reservoir and bracket (have to bend it out of the way), MAF sensor, Webasto bracket etc. And careful not to drop any bolts, I lost one.
The nearside is a doddle, and looking at YouTube vids for a Polo, it looks so much easier.
This has to be the worst car I've ever worked on for access.

Evening all,

Today I… Went to Halfords for some cable ties as run out from adding retrofit looms.

Whilst there I see a lovely A2 parked up with a Halfords employee in the front seat. I purchased the items I was after and when back outside I approached the A2 and said hello to the Halfords employee who was struggling to get the Concert 2 head unit out; for an aftermarket head unit replacement. Asked him to stop what he was doing and popped over to my car to get a set of factory head unit removal keys. Seconds later the Concert 2 was out.

I stayed with the Halfords employee for a while letting him know where to pick up a suitable ignition live as he had no idea that the A2 didn’t have such a feed readily available.

Never did see the owner and not seen this particular A2 on my local roads before, be nice to catch up with them though.

Kind regards,

Tom

The A2 headhunt swap is a microcosm of the A2 foibles isn't it! OEM rules the roost

Can fitting a aftermarket stereo cause any battery drain issues?
Mr grey came with a aftermarket head unit that hasn't got a cd player and the wiring has been adapted with an addition wire put in to the fuse box.
I have fitted an old unit I had in my b5 passat but have found it only works with ignition on and where as in the passat you swopped the ignition live and permanent live around I have had to put these back correctly for the unit to retain memory. I do prefer stock thou!

Hello Tom,

Difficult to answer for your Mr Grey as I’ve not seen the wiring arrangement and don’t know what head unit it actually is. Rest assured though, if the Mini-ISO connectors and associated wiring were adapted correctly then you shouldn’t have any current drain. The pre-ignition live to hold volatile memory (radio station pre-sets etc) is absolutely minimal when off as it is within a factory head unit. The ignition live obviously cannot draw anything whilst the ignition is off.

The answer to your question really depends on how the wiring was adapted for the aftermarket head unit. The problem is possibly elsewhere in the vehicle. Cannot say for sure. Have you tested the circuits to fully understand where the current draw is coming from or have you already concluded it’s the head unit power supplies.

Kind regards,

Tom
