Today I.....

Today I dropped Audrey off at a bodyshop in Exmouth for the accident damage to the rear quarter and paint on the bumper to be repaired at the perpetrator’s expense.

Whilst there he is going to tend to one or two other bits I want sorting while it’s in a booth to bring it up to showroom condition once more - including the scratch on the rear bumper that I incurred when loading something heavy in the back. I have now bought a fold-out cover that will velcro to the inner boot sill under the false floor!

Today I only noticed after a month! that my offside rear door doesn't activate the courtesy light or indicate that it's open on the dash display. It does locks and unlocks ok. There seem to be rubber button switches for sale on eBay from A2 model but mine don't have these, so I assume it's a microswitch in the door lock. I've seen on YouTube that this can be either the microswitch itself or the cam that operates it. Are these parts available as spares and are they easy to change once the lock mechanism is removed? Not sure I'll get around to fixing it until the weather is a bit warmer (not urgent as door works ok) but would like to order parts so I have them ready 😁
Thanks Dave

Thanks Paul 👍 so if its the cam thats worn is it a case of getting a replacement lock or is there another solution??
Cheers Dave

Very often the solder joints are the issue
Lost count on how many of these I’ve fixed with a reflow
Worst job is removing the lock assy from the door

Thanks Paul, from what I could learn from YouTube the rear locks seemed to come out easier than the fronts. Look very similar to the ones in my sister's 2008 golf I changed last year. Are the A2 locking mechanisms used in any other VAG models ?

Not to my knowledge. But to be fair I’ve not research it as there is a good supply of A2 ones at the moment through the likes of A2steve and clackers Etc

Hi, don't mean to butt in but if it's any use to you, I swapped the rear nearside lock mechanism for an aftermarket Golf mk4 a couple of years ago, the ones advertised on eBay for £25, memories a bit vague now but think it was also possible to separate the electronics from the new one and retain the A2 mechanical bit ... I just swapped the whole thing and it works.

Thanks, I thought it looked very similar :) I think the only difference is the A2 has 7 pins in the connector whereas the golf only has 6. Did the courtesy light etc.. work OK when you fitted the Golf one ?

Hello all,

Today I rectified this issue:

By being able to remove the number plate light housings easily and without dismantling the tailgate:

Decided to replace both bulbs as I guess the offside will no doubt follow the nearside and fail in the coming months. New bulbs in with fresh stainless steel screws:

Very happy with this satisfying 5 minutes task (after applying penetrating oil a few times a day over the last week).

Kind regards.

Tom

You've got me thinking now if it was a Mk4 ... definitely a Golf though ... the socket matched up without altering. I'll see if I can find it again.

Apologies, duff information ... it was an aftermarket mechanism for a Golf Mk5 ... I can't remember doing anything other than a straight swap.

Thanks I'm undecided whether to get a replacement from a breaker or a new one from a golf as there's not much of a difference in price from what I can see. Just worried any used ones will be 20years old so not sure it's better to go new and avoid having to replace again. Autodoc have new ones specific for the A2 for around £75 but I can't think they'll be any different from the golf ones

With my nails bitten away it turns out I didn't need to worry. Given the car has barely moved since August and been outside the majority of the time this feels a good result. Now for some insurance for a provisional license holder and get the L plates fitted.
