H7 Headlight Bulbs

Yesterday changed the nearside dipped beam bulb (H7), requiring removal of the headlight unit (but not the main cable) and faffing about trying to release the bulb connector clip and reseat the surrounding seal, all with cold hand, only to find after putting it all back that the bulb was dud! It was bought 6 years ago and had been in the boot since then. I think the suspension upgrade (too hard) had not done it any good.

Halfords wanted £20 for the same bulb (own brand 50% extra bright) and £25 for +130% requiring 2 at £50 - ouch!

Went online and found Powerbulbs selling Philips Xtreme Vision +130% at £22.99 for twin pack. Delivery said 1st class option was £2.95 but on the order form no 1st option. Rang the company and they said sorry and the chap altered the system, I refreshed the page and voilà 1st class was an option. Entered credit card details, click confirm and a blank page :) Rang again and more apologies and they took the order over the phone with a further discount. So paid £21.34 including 1st class. I'm very pleased. Almost a £30 saving compared to Halfords.

I finally have sideguards after spending ageIMG_20170126_181354.jpgIMG_20170126_181354.jpgs collecting parts. Most of parts had been gathering dust until Tom expertly installed and coded the kit on Wednesday. He's attention to detail is second to none and he's one of the few I'd trust with this job. Unfortunately I forgot to take pics along the way but a few below after the installIMG_20170126_181237.jpgIMG_20170126_181354.jpg.

Good stuff. I have only ever removed one of these kits but I was surprised just how big the units are running the whole length of the car. It looks like you have done some custom interior trimming there, any chance of some more photos of your interior?

Got and installed a new wiper blade.
Old one started ripping apart because of low temperatures.

Hi, Joe,
What he was doing there?
I see you have rear windows tinted. I have a question: Are those windows tinted to match rear window or they all are tinted more then oem rear window? Maybe you have a picture where I could see the view better?:) thanks

Hi SauMart,

Thanks for your comments and sorry for the late reply. Timmus was adding a few mods, DIS, cruise control, sports seats and lumbar support. I can't speak highly enough of his work, I certainly learned alot.

As Steve B said my rear windows are not tinted, they are removable blinds from vanstyle-uk via ebay, believe I paid around £70 for 6 piece set, I contacted them via phone and asked for a discount. Will upload some photos for you so you can have a good look. I agree with Steve B, they are better than tints in my opinion, as they can be removed, also the windows can be opened with the blinds fitted. Definitely happy with them and lil big man is too.

Kindest Regards,
Joe

Hey Steve,

I was also surprised by how substantive the units are. I managed to source the full kit including bolts, loom, ecu
and brackets. Since the roof liner had to come, I decided to use the opportunity to DIY re-trim the panel in alcantara.
It looks ok but nowhere near the quality finish Steve B achieved in his. I also sprayed the trim items in black as the platinum looks wrong against the alcantara. Will put a few more pics up.

Max

Thanks very much, Max. It's not a retrofit I'm frequently asked to do and I enjoyed it very much. As always, it was nice seeing you and working on your car. In your photos, I can also see the sounder unit for the OEM parking sensors that I fitted at the same time. :)

May our paths cross again soon.

Today I ... witnessed somebody reverse into the A2. Yes the damage isn't the worst but what an annoyance.

Where to put the bonnet

Bulbs arrived next day and have just fitted in a few minutes without problem, removing both headlights but not cables.

It's always a question as to what to do with the bonnet. In the past I've used blankets and sheets of cardboard. But the solution has been staring me in the face all along:

Today at the third attempt the quest starts to find the basis for my project/summer A2.
The first was a disaster after 270 mile round trip to view a 1.6 sport . The car was filthy in and out, peeling lacquer, damage and scratches on every panel.
The second started last week at a local garage. A 75 TDI with all the right bits a pieces. A deposit was left so they could valet it and then i would be able to see it in its for sale state. Unfortunately over the weekend several checks revealed the speedo had lost 100,000 miles between mot's 2012/2013. Going back on Monday further scrutiny of the service book revealed alterations to dates on the sevice schedule. They returned my deposit !
Third time lucky i hope.

Fitted some eBay heated wing mirrors thanks to a guide on here :)

Adjusted my gear linkages thanks to a guide on here :)

Started tracing the root of my brake pad wear sensor warning light, thanks to a guide here :)

Oh, and booked in for cruise control retrofit for later this week.

Do you have a link to the mirror glass you bought? Heard that some non OEM parts don't fit very well.

Today, well yesterday, I finally got time to take my FSI to a garage for shock absorber change - the old ones were totally waste at the rear. New Monroe Reflex all round, very pleased - they seem to be quite stiff, which I like, as there are lots of twisty roads here.

Today I ........
Popped over to our daughter's for dinner.
FIVE A2s there. Three generations of owners.
The wife's 90
Daughters nice Dolphin grey Tdi
Grandson's red 230,000 miles (£300) tdi and two that we are rescuing. A FSI sport with 89k miles and a 2001 Tdi with good spec including BOSE and OSS plus other options (and 205,000 miles!!).

Not the best photo, it was getting really dark. (now "tweaked" by photo editing, sometimes I really like computers)

Left - Silver Tdi rescue 205K miles,
Behind that is the FSI Sport with 89K miles
Back is the Dolphin 75 tdi in really nice condition and low miles
The white one is the wife's fully specced Tdi 90 (90k miles)
In the foreground - the grandson's 230K Tdi (his mum and dad use it a lot because he is not yet 17 and the car drives better than theirs!!!
