What's your target diesel MPG?

Will

Reading through threads, especially the 5th gear thread, it seems that people have set themselves targets for achievable MPG in their diesel carsl like 70mpg at 70mph.

It would be interesting to catalogue people's baseline MPG, target MPG and the changes they have made and then the new MPG.

I'll start.

Baseline: 70mpg (150mile commute to work, mostly 60mph)
Target: 80mpg (150mile commute to work, mostly 60mph)

Changes so far:
2psi increase on all tyres - MPG change too small to measure, especially with current changeable ambient temperature

Changes to come:
Millers diesel additive
Remap
5th gear ratio + gearbox oil
Lowering (maybe one day, we'll see) :)

Baseline 52-54mpg mixture of slow B roads, fast A roads, m/way in warm-ish weather on re-mapped and lowered '75'. I try and drive as fast as conditions allow upto speed limit + 10%.(50mpg in recent very cold weather)

Target 60+mpg.

Changes so far: 5th gear ratio change to 0.659, narrower low frictio tyres on 15" wheels, low friction synthetic gearbox oil. Mpg now @ 56+mpg in cold/cool weather.

To come: Check MAF, Aero mods, adjust tyre pressures, Sebring exhaust, try Ultimate/V power and/or Millers over long term. Rid car of surplus weight from 'junk' in boot....!

My wife uses the car for every day commuting which is a 15 mile run each way and she rarely gets into 5th. She was getting 51mpg but with Millers this is now 53mpg.
However the main goal is to improve the mpg on the distance driving we do (kids in Uni - London & Bristol & house in Italy) so that is where we want to achieve improvement.

Details of monitored runs:

Fully Loaded run to Scotland variable speeds up to 80mph, attrocious cold conditions - 50mpg

Unloaded & with Millers last week at 60 mph - 71mpg (achieved around 75mpg on motorway only)

GOAL - Fully loaded - 70mpg at 70mph on Motorway only

80.7mpg That's what Audi say it should do on an extra urban journey! LOL:rolleyes:

I know we have been through this before, and the test figures are not real world, But Hammond, actually beat the extra urban figure in the Polo Blue motion from Basel to Blackpool. So in theory even a standard A2 tdi SE should be able to beat this figure, let alone an aero modded, long geared one on eco tyres!

VCAcarfueldata says,

Extra-Urban Cycle:
This cycle is conducted immediately following the urban cycle and consists of roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations, and some idling. Maximum speed is 75mph (120km/h), average speed is 39mph (63 km/h) and the distance covered is 4.3miles (7km)
.

So in theory, it should be easy to smash the 80.0mpg if cruising at 55mph on the motorway.

I don't think anyone in a 1.4 tdi has yet?

You could well be correct.
This Sprit Monitor user has the highest average efficiency for an A2 1.4TDi, but his highest single recording is only 76.5mpg

http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/detail/371380.html

If someone can modify a car with all the known efficiency improvements I wonder if they can achieve a genuine 80mpg over a whole tank? Now there's a challange :)

On another forum I know of a Mercedes CLS320CDi owener that can average almost 55mpg. Quite impressive I thought.

On the same note - does the spoiler from a 1.6 have any effect on mpg? Im sure i read a thread saying that it increased the top speed. In effect im guessing it makes it slightly more slippery than the standard spoiler - would this benefit mpg ???

I went from Bristol to ST Ives at a steady 56-60mph and returned 77.5mpg in a remapped TDI 75 with climate on.

It was so boooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrring, added about 2 hours to the trip.

Never again, I am happy with 65mpg at 70mph and get there before its time to come home.

good spot about the oil , mike is going to do my 5th gear very soon and he is going to use the latest version of the audi oil...

starts searching net to find out what bluemotion cars use! :rolleyes:

Used Millers 75/90 synthetic gear oil which claims to be low friction etc etc.. However due to the lack of oil in the 'box when it was drained :eek: it is slightly difficult to compare before/after other than it is more obstructive when cold and Mike did comment the oil was much thicker than the Audi stuff. I suspect i may not have made a good choice and possibly should have carried out more research.... I am happy to change the oil if something is found which proves to be more suitable ie 'Bluemotion' oil.

I have found this if useful:

Viscosity Comparison @ 100 C

(Manual G-Box Fluids)
16.7 = Motul MOTYLGEAR 75-90
15.6 = Redline MT-90 75-90
15.2 = Mobil 1 Synthetic 75W-90
15.2 = Motul Gear 300 75-90
15.0 = Elf Tranself Synthese FE 75-90
14.9 = AMSOIL AGL 80W-90
13.8 = Amsoil MTG 75-90
10.6 = Redline MTL 70-80
9.6 = AMSOIL MTF Synchromesh Trans fluid (GM/Chrysler)

I've heard others mention the Redline box oil as the best for economy but never seen actual figures behind that before. What's the source for that?
The spec for the Audi oil is a 75W/90 though isn't it, which would mean the Redline oil isn't actually the right stuff for us, unless they make one of those as well?

On my quest to find out what the Bluemotion oil is, I have found out that the Seat Ibiza Ecomotive (almost identical engine/gearbox) is gear oil API GL4 SAE 75W in accordance with standard TL 52512. Not sure what the standard is but this is from the service manager of local SEAT dealer

Thanks. This looks suitable I think. How many litres does the diesel A2 need? I hope my local GSF will have some to save postage.

There is an expanded version of Will's list (From the TDi Club Forum) which shows some of the VW spec gearbox oils have a significantly lower viscosity than most of the offerings from the usual manufacturers -

VI Vis@40C Vis@100C
128 159.0 18.3 = AMSOIL CTL SAE 50 Powershift GL-1
..............16.7 = Motul MOTYLGEAR 75-90 GL-4/-5

185 90.0 15.6 = Redline MT-90 75-90 GL-4
..............15.2 = Mobil 1 Synthetic 75W-90 GL-5

..............15.0 = Elf Tranself Synthese FE 75-90 GL-4/-5
132 116.0 14.9 = AMSOIL AGL 80W-90 GL-5
177 84.5 14.7 = AMSOIL MTG 75-90 GL-4

208 41.6 9.1 = Penzoil Synchromesh trans fluid GL-?
198 34.0 7.5 = Redline D4 ATF Dexron III / Mercon / API GL-4
138 40.5 7.1 = AMSOIL CTG SAE 10W Powershift GL-1

..............6.3 = VW G52 (part numbers G052726A2 / G05272601) GL-?

Original spec for the A2 gearbox was G-052-178-A2 which is not on the above list

Cheers Spike

All current Polo gearboxes (including the Bluemotion) are filled with G070 gearbox oil, which is the uprated oil I have put in Tank.

As Spike says, the original spec oil for the A2 was G052, which was then superceded by G060 oil, and in turn, this is now replaced by G070.

There's no super special Bluemotion specific oil Will, this is probably why you're having a job finding it.

Cheers,

Mike

As far as i can determine so far the Millers oil I used appears to be somewhere around '15'. Bad move on my part! Think i will drain and refill with the correct Audi oil.... PM on its way Mike! By the way Will you need 2 litres.
