Where is the thermostat on the 1.4TDi?

Cheers Dan, I did see that pdf, but couldn't make out where it was:confused:. I take it that a full coolant change is needed, how many litres are required?
Thanks Nathan

Right!! so what is the next thing to try if the changing of the temp sender and the thermostat doesn't work
Cheers Nathan

Hi Dan

I went to change the thermostat this morning - but for the life of me could not work out how to access the bottom bolt of the thermostat pipe! The alternator is in the way but I didn't want to move that and disturb the alternator belts - how did you get the thermostat pipe off? Did you use a special tool, or did you have to move things out the way first?

Just in case anybody reading this is curious. To get the bottom bolt of the thermostat pipe off (without moving the alternator) required the aquisition of the smallest 10mm hex head socket on a universal ball joint I could find, £6.30 well spent in Murray's tool store Edinburgh. Thermostat now works as expected and temperature gauge sits at a solid 90.

Except... I overfilled the coolant header tank, and on the first proper journey burst the temperature sender out of its seal :embarassment: Either too much pressure in the coolant system, or more likely I'd insufficiently seated the temperature sender when I replaced that previously.

All now the way it should be and hopefully stays that way!
