Purchacing and programming a spare key

Hello everyone!

I've researched the various threads on this subject but am still a little confused.

I was only supplied with one key on the purchase of my A2 and am now looking to get a spare sorted out.

My first question is as follows:

The part number on my key is 8Z0 837 231 and it communicates with the car at a frequency of 433.92 MHz. While looking on eBay for a possible candidates, I've found examples that match the nine digits as listed above, but some of them also have an additional suffix by way of a single letter, i.e. D. Is this letter of any significance? And where might I find the corresponding suffix on my existing key?

Secondly, I'm at a loss about the programming of a second key. Will these instructions that I purchased (for 99p - worth a punt, I thought) from eBay work? OR will I need to get the key programmed at an Audi dealer or local auto locksmith? (I'm assuming that the blade can be cut at any reputable locksmiths?):

Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)

1. Using your original key Switch Ignition ON but do not start engine
and leave the key in the ignition.

2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second key.
If you only have one key put the drivers window down shut the door and
lock it using the button on the inside of the door.

3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn
will sound once.

4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the
coding procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.

NOTE : When performing programming on additional remotes the procedure
is the same, except you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times for the
different remote.

For example : If programming 2 remotes press the unlock button twice
with a 1 second interval between each press, repeat for 3 and 4 remotes.

5. Switch Ignition OFF.

6. Remove key from ignition and check for operation.

7. The coding procedure can be repeated up to 4 times for additional
remotes.

8. The ignition must be switched OFF between programming each remote
control.

Remote Control Erasing (1997 ON)

1. Using your original key Switch Ignition ON but do not start engine
and leave the key in the ignition.

2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second key.
If you only have one key put the drivers window down shut the door and
lock it using the button on the inside of the door.

3. Press the remote control unlock button 5 times in 1 second intervals.
A short horn will sound.

4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate memory
erase.

5. Switch ignition OFF, all remotes are now erased.

I'm obviously keen to get this right - I don't want to end up with an A2 I can't start...that would be awful!

I will be very grateful, as always :), of any advice any of you can offer.

I'm looking forward to the time when I've garnered enough A2 experience to be able to help somebody myself!

Hope that you're all well.

Kind regards,

Michael Davenport.

Key

Hi there. Went thru the same not long ago. Tried a newer model key from VW with the same frequency. The key was offered free of charge from the dealer as a non pick up from another customer (electronic part). Had to order the key with the chassis number and a copy of my ID card and car registration. Price was 49€ for the metal part and top of the key.
Now here is the part. Old key has to be deactivated and recoded with the new one as original spare that you don't have needs to be deactivated to avoid missuse.
The key that I received was no good and could not be activated properly so ended up to order new one. Went thru the activation and coding process in about 15 minutes time. Now I have 2 keys for the car and feel safer with the spare on hand and knowing that the original spare key is no use anymore. Dont want my car to fly away one nigth!
Total cost: +-110€.

Your .99 p program has the advantage of existing but.....not working.

My opinion. DJ

Perfect timing!...I have also just purchased an A2 and would like another key.

I contacted my local Audi dealer and they quoted me £145 for a new key including prigramming,,,they seemed to think it would take 1/2 an hour to program?

I would also be interested to find out if a key could be legitimately purchased from a specialist for less cost...Cheers, :)

Key programming

I can tell you from recent experience as those of you who have followed my story, are aware, it IS entirely possible to get the key programmed to the A2 without being at the mercy of the dealers.

What you will need is a device to read the 'pin' (SKC (Secret Key Code)) number from the 'clocks' (instrument cluster) then it has to be entered into Vag Com, which allows you to program the key to the system.

I HAVE a second remote fob, but although it says A2 on it as well as A4, it doesn't have the 'D' on the end of the number which is otherwise the same.

This I was told won't work with my car by the guy who did my coding, however I did get the transponder programmed to the car and opened the key and replaced the old transponder, bought a blank blade from eBay and got it cut. This now serves me as a key that will open the doors (using the key not fob) & start the car, but not remote opening/closing till I replace the top half of the key with the correct number, and programme it to my car.

Another thing, it is entirely possible to put the ECU into 'Free Running', this means that the immobiliser is deactivated and you can start the car with just turning the barrel, this is usually done for intermittent faults with immobilisers and I considered this as I was getting frustrated at bad/poor/lack of information available when I was trying to get the car started recently after finishing it. What I was going to do was get ECU put into free running and then fit an after market high quality immobiliser/alarm, but in the end I managed to get it sorted.

I had a visit to Sarge786 in the weekend, who kindly helped me with the A/C diagnostics! What a nice guy and sharp looking Shoby car!

While I was there, I also took advantage of Sarge's PIN code reading service. Not to be blackmailed by dealers, Sarge bought the equipment to retrieve the Key PIN code from the instrument clock so new key fobs can be programmed to the car, WITHOUT the dealer! Knowing the equipment is quite expensive so I thought £20 is well worth the money. Thanks Sarge! I would definitely recommend other members to get in touch with Sarge if you want additional keys.

Hi Humps, Nice meeting you. I do try to help where I can.
Right guys, as you maybe aware, you will be at the mercy of the dealers should you lose your key, and have to fork out what they demand. I have paid a lot of money for some tools, this includes a device which 'reads' the cars instrument cluster's and ECU's 'PIN' (SKC (Secret Key Code)). Even the dealers are now unable to access this pin as the current system used for this is the GeKo system, this involves the dealer hooking up a pc to the car and Audi HQ Germany interrogating the car directly, this means that the local dealer doesn't even know the pin number as they can't see it, therefore they can't give it to you. Plus there is a delay of least 5 days for the key to arrive made to your car.

Armed with this pin, you ARE able to program new transponders (located in the front half of your remote fob) using the Vag Com software, thus allowing you to start your car, as well as doing other things with the Instrument cluster.
Having this pin also allows you to get into the ECU, and do various other things too.

To start to recover costs/losses I thought £20 for your pin would be very reasonable, and I can offer this service whilst I have this equipment. I paid £140 to get pin on my car!, when I finished Shoby Car to get it to start. Most guys who you call to program the key won't give you this pin as it eliminates their services after you have your pin number, as you can do what they do with the pin and Vag Com.

With the greatest respect I am only supplying the pin to your car and nothing else, A FREE Vag Com scan will be available while you are here for your pin.

I am based in East London.

LOL .. You read my mind, I was going to put that info here too! :D

As far as I am aware, OUR cars (A2's) use IMMO 3.

You will need the SKC for several important operations:

Immobilizer 3 Instrument Cluster Swapping

Immobilizer 3 Key Matching

Immobilizer 3 Measuring Blocks

Immobilizer 3 ECU Swapping

Key Matching with New 7-Digit SKC

Key Matching with Old 4-Digit SKC

And More!

IMMO 3 with ref to our A2's

Key Matching (New) Car SKC NEEDED
Key Matching (Used) Not possible - THIS IS POSSIBLE, as im MY case with Shoby Car, But with a new transponder
ECU Swapping (used) Car & Used ECU SKC Needed
Cluster Swapping (New) Car SKC Needed
Cluster Swapping (Used) Car SKC & Used Cluster Needed

(I'm still/always learning :))

sarge is that a vag tacho you used to extract the SKC

Hi Mate, I bought this too (Vag Tacho 2.2 & 2.4) but they simply didn't work with our cars, another waste of money on my excercise.

I ended up buying a professional hand held tool to read the SKC from the car.

auditt

thanks for the reply sarge.
is yours an ad100 or alike?
or did you get one of the cheaper versions off ebay?

Armed with this pin, you ARE able to program new transponders (located in the front half of your remote fob) using the basic Vag Com software, thus allowing you to start your car, as well as other things with the Instrument cluster.

I am not sure it will do CAN based cars as yet but will do K.

Hi Sarge

I tried doing the key in ignition and using new second key from ebay in door lock etc, but it doesnt seem to work. Do i need the Pin code? If so could you email me your details or where i meet you to help me with this.

Thanks

Alan

I managed to do my backup key yesterday. SKC pin code by VAG Commander 3.6 and key learning by vag com. I think it may be difficult to get a spare key with much lower budget:

Vag Commander cable from OBDChina, 28 e
New HAA key front (without remote part!) from DX, 10 e
Milling of key blade, 10 e

Might be looking for remote part if I can source suitable second hand unit. But for now I'm reliefed because I have a backup key and the other keys I don't own won't start the car anymore. Actually I was surprised to see vag com listed 3 keys to be paired to the car but I only had one!

On the other hand, now that I have gone through the key-learning process, I feel the immobilizer III is not really safe anymore because immobilizer can be passed by anyone capable of little googling and small investments to components and chords!

One note about the HAA key I bought the locksmith that machined my key said blade is made of very hard material. This is not good for your lock in long term because the lock itself wears and not the blade - trade-off for low price :)
