1.4 TDI Knock From engine bay when tapping accelerator

Thanks!

Just saw the 3 quid blanking plate! http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A2-A3-...3A1676509215d0a861dff020e3ffeee26a%7Ciid%3A14

Do I have to reattach the egr when I go for mot?
I don't believe that you have to. Two of mine have passed their MOT a couple of times each, without the EGR.

One thing i eould like input on though.
The engine does give a little shudder when you switch it off each time on both cars without the EGR.
I THINK I read somewhere that removing the EGR can cause this. Can anyone confirm this please?

To be honest I would refit the EGR if it is the cause of this short but unpleasant shudder.

There are different EGRs for different A2 engines and on the face of it the adverts on Ebay seem to be confusing. But if you use the compatibility charts on some of them it should help.

Make sure that if you are looking for s Tdi one you check for the engine code too (AMF or BHC) they are different. As are the petrol engine EGRs (of course!)

tripple check!!!

some would recommend just cleaning the one you have, after all you have to remove it to put the new one on anyway.

My recomrndation would be to try cleaning yours first. If that doesn't help or if you have EGR related error codes, then try a new one at a reasonable saving.

I have managed to get one of eBay for £21 from Lithuania :D will clean it up and put that one on I'm going to clean the original one off the car and keep it as a spare :D

EGR/Anti Shudder valve has arrived today, it's a little choked up with carbon deposits so needs a thourogh clean before it's ready to be fitted, I am now thinking wether it would be sensible to blank off the EGR valve when replacing it, does anyone know the Pro's/Con's of doing this and also if it effect the emissions test during an MOT?

You could have blanked off the old egr... no need to get a new one to blank it off...

I think others have already posted they've passed mot with blanked off egr

the egr as no effect on the diesel MoT test, only smoke is measured, on the AMF engine removing and plugging the vacuum pipe to the EGR will remove the operation of the EGR value, however giving it a clean will also help the inlet air flow so well worth cleaning it. blanking off the vacuum pipe to the EGR also removes the mooing sound :)
cheers,

I was thinking of blanking the exhaust inlet to the ERG valve and leaving all of the vacuum connected up for now. Would seem a shame to clean it only to let it get sooted up again.

There's no need to blank off the EGR exhaust inlet unless you remove the innards of the EGR valve itself, as has been done here: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?32986-TDI120-My-New-Engine&p=281496#post281496

If you're not going to remove the innards of the EGR, blanking the exhaust inlet serves no purpose, as it's easier to simply disconnect the vacuum line to the EGR valve. With the vacuum line disconnected, the EGR valve can never lift up, meaning the valve effectively acts as a blank and things cannot get all sooted up again. So, by all means clean the valve as this will aid air flow, but then just install the valve as per factory, but simply leave the vacuum line disconnected. Be sure to block the vacuum line with a bolt or something similar to save it from sucking in grot.

I've had my EGR disabled for years and have never had any issues at MOT time, but an advantage of the above method is that the EGR can be made operational again simply by reconnecting an easily-accessible vacuum line.

Cheers,

Tom

Cleaned up the EGR/Anti Shudder Valve ready for Friday, hopefully this will stay clean for the next few years, still in two minds wether to disconnect the EGR Valve, I am running low SAPS oil and using premium diesel so I would imagine that it will run fairly clean.

Ooo yes, that's beautifully clean! :)

Okay so the clean EGR Valve has been fitted today, however, the same noise still persists, either I have another EGR with the same fault or this is not a fault at all and it's a feature of the 1.4TDI

New EGR was cleaned thoroughly, lubricated and had both vacuum actuators checked so I know it's fully working

simple answer is to disconnect the vacuum pipe to the EGR valve, no noise, engine runs cleaner win win

I will have a look at that, I have heard that without the EGR Valve working you get a bit of a violent shudder when stopping the engine.
