255 miles from one tank after driving carefully..

Yes you're right everything on the internet is fake news!

Perhaps you can post from a better source...

Looking at the breakdown on that website looks about right to me to be honest, the top bit are the a2 3L figures however. If you do lots of stop start in 85% city driving I really don’t think 30mpg is that bad, my 1.4 does short trips and mainly city and it this or lower and it’s in very good health I’ve had 4 petrols 1.6/1.4 and all achieved around this. If you don’t know when the oil and oil filter was last changed the time is now, for £90ish to get this done it’s worth every penny, a service is preferable but if saving money then this is the least you can do really, personally I always change the oil in my cars every 5000 miles, if you want to save a bit on this you can buy the oil for around £25-40 and a filter for around £10ish so it could be as little as £35 if you get a good deal on oil.

I do have an ABS warning light, on startup it says SERVICE! then OK, and a (( ! )) with 3 beeps comes up almost every drive. Might have something to do with it? I scanned it, and we think it might be the EGR.

The ((!)) warning and the Abs light I think could be brake fluid level I’d check this asap

Not sure what the scanner is, I borrowed it from a colleague. It's basic. Brakes work fine, very occasionally I'll feel what feels like a rock/lump on the brake pedal when pressing down. Not sure when the car was last serviced.

P0404 is an EGR fault I believe, not related to the brakes, could affect your mpg however

The only times my 1.4 gets down as low as 30mpg is when it's in the garage having work done. I get high 30s pretty much as a minimum for city centre driving. Perhaps your cars aren't quite as healthy as you like to think?

Completely depends on the conditions, if you’re in London traffic doesn’t matter how good of condition your car is in your mpg will not be good, I’ve broken 50mpg on the same car in long runs in good conditions, I used to have a v6 golf and in city centre driving sub 10mpg was common, on the open road 35mpg was possible on a long run, 30mpg in city traffic. Audi quote the urban mpg as 34mpg.

........

I just converted 6.86 L/100Km and got 34 MPG.

.....
Good Evening,

6.86 L/100km converts to 41 mpg.

I suspect your 34 mpg came from Google, if so the following information is relevant, for every one else as well.

First Google is an American company so naturally uses an American gallon which contains 6 pints, not our 8 pints unless otherwise directed.

Curiously if you ask Google '6.86L/100k to imperial mpg' it ignores imperial!!

Even more curious if you put 'imperial' last Google takes notice!!

To be fair to Google it does present information below the conversion result but who looks at this anyway. Also notice the drop down boxes on showing the conversion figures allowing you to swap.

Might be worth contacting someone on the members VCDS scan list

From an earlier response it sounds like there maybe a number of errors and a scan with VCDS might make it easier to diagnose. I don’t like the sound of the sensation you get through your foot at times when braking. Almost certainly due a service as others have said
Oh nice this is great, had no idea something like this existed. I'll have a look into it

Best thing to do is meet up with a member with vcds and get an enthusiasts opinion, costs nothing. There are things that could be running bad that won't come up innscan like coolant temperature sensors, blocked air filter, blocked fuel filters, and so on. These will all have their 2mpg effect and all of a sudden your way off what it shoukd be doing. May be a few simple fixes. Driving any car in town on shirt journeys will get you 70% of its potential at best.

Make sure you come back feed us hungry addicts more info 😆 🤣
Sounds likely to be honest. The nice man I bought the car from did all of the big jobs on the car while he had it, so I'm supposing that leaves me with all the little bits he didn't encounter. E.g. a new alternator when I first got it

I'm up north, Sheffield, but not in the city. My results are a little worrying considering. also, those golf figures

Recently topped up the oil, in the last 2 weeks, as well as the engine coolant as that was beeping at me. Car has been just as thirsty since but behaving smoother

There's not much traffic where I am, at least compared to general city traffic, I definitely classify it as town driving so I feel I should be better off but you're more experienced than I am with these cars

Thanks for the heads up. The car has been performing, this warning has been coming on for the past few weeks, I'll check the brake fluid tonight

Yeah this is what my mechanic friend said and what we saw after some online searching. It confused us at first as I had no idea petrols had EGRs lol. I've given it plenty of good runs to try and clear it out but no change, so I'm going to get the car booked in to a garage next week I think.

Really recommend getting it scanned, before it goes to the garage. FSIs are a bit of a rare breed, and although basic servicing is pretty straightforward, some FSIs specifics need more specialised knowledge.
Use the free scan register, then post the results here. 🤞
Mac.

mine has been hovering at 7.xl/100 with lots of town use. Long term average was 6.3... spritmonitor is useless at the moment as my offspring never fills it. Ì've seen 10l/100 when it's cold...

You are using 98, aren't you?

Yeah I'm going to, I'm waiting for the warning light/beeps to come on during my way home from work so I can ring up my mechanic friend to bring his fancy scanner. He's a VAG specialist so I should be able to leave it with him if we get the issue on lock

I try but it depends where I go. I have a favourite with 99, but sometimes its 97. Your figures are quite reassuring to be honest

Wouldn't it be way easier to fully convert to metric finally? 😜

In the old days (when the A2 was being sold) they used to quote 3 figures, urban/56mph/75mph. If the urban 6.86/100Km is the correct Audi claim then it would be very optimistic! In those days everyone used to think the quoted urban figure was a joke (not just for the A2). I didn't use Google but I thought 34 MPG looked optimistic, so I didn't check which gallon they were using. 41 MPG is an even more outlandish claim.

On the Parkers Guide site it just says 47 MPG. I seem to remember reading somewhere that this was the 56 mph figure for the 1.4, so are they claiming this as an average? If so, I doubt that is achievable by the majority.

For information my 1.4 Sport with lighter 15" wheels and low rolling resistance tyres, running always on VPower 99 shows on my Timmus DIS:

37 MPG at an average of 24 mph over 4829 miles.

My average, over three and a half years, is 45.8 mpg. No fancy app, just a spreadsheet. I enjoy driving, and I'm not into eco mode, and the FSI can be driven with enthusiasm.
Mac.
