Automatic light + Coming / Leaving home

Hi,

A REALLY naff video I just took (it was freezing cold)

It shows the operation of the coming home function, which most people are familiar with.

In the video it starts off pitch black and when I remotely unlock the car the fog lights come on to show the way. If I waited they would have gone off again (timed)
Similarly when I exit the car the fogs will light again to light the way "home"

By the way the constant flashing of the hazards is a setting on the "RemoteKey" and I will be changing the settings on that ASAP it is driving me nuts!!!

Are tou using regular foglights or is that DRL? Looks a bit halogen style colorwise.

Hi,

They are just the uprated "blue" bulbs (100watt so technically illegal I believe)
I will be replacing them with LED H7s I have, when I get time to fit them (and enough warmth!)
As you can see from the interior lights and side lights I am a fan of the LED "clean" white lighting (including dipped and Main beam)

Yeah cause I remember you mentioning of LED fogs and I was gonna buy off you as well. My xenon didnt pass MOT(in sweden) last week after all these years having them on my A2 and they not noticing.

Not sure if Im gonna take them away fully or just make a quick replacement to regular bulbs. Xenen on the beam that shows a blue sign in the car dis(not sure the name of that mode) is allowed tho but not on the regular light mode is what this dude told me.

Do the indicators keep flashing too? That would annoy me
Hi
As I mentioned in the thread (but it is a long thread so I am not surprised that you missed it) the indicators are not being triggered by this kit. They are being triggered by the "RemoteKey" kit I fitted that controls the windows, sunroof and fuel flap.
The flashing of the indicators was an option and I can turn that option off and I will, it annoys me too.
But it is a two minute change to stop them.

Sorry, wasn´t aware of a German section here. Should have a look at that more often.
Just in case, don´t hesitate to PM me!
So proud having contributet a little tiny part to your top spec car...

No need to apologise, you were offering help, so no need to be sorry.

Yes, this is a significant add on to my project and one that is probably the best value for money "toy" I have added!!

Cheers

Good to hear you can switch off those indicators. :)

LEDs in the fogs would look nice, although not good for cutting through fog. Maybe they could be set up as LED DRLs?

Hi,

Had another try at the video, covered the sensor to fool it into thinking it was dark.

Unfortunately I also added my monotone voice explaining what I was doing.

Most non-A2 owners discovering this video by accident will probably ask "why is he explaining a frequently fitted optional extra that everyone is aware of?"
But they would not be aware that it is an option that was never available for the A2.

You will also spot that I have changed the setting on the "RemoteKey" to stop those annoying hazards from flashing for ages upon locking.

I have also swapped out the 100w H7 fog lamp bulbs and put in the H7 LEDs and the good news is that they do not give a "bulb out" warning on the DIS like the rear LED bulbs did.

Yes, I like the look of the LED white light.
As for "cutting through the fog" I am not sure that any fog lights do this. In my experience they all just light up the fog and turn it white instead of cutting through it. But these H7 LEDs are very white and very bright (brighter than the standard H7 55w bulbs, so they should be fine (although I have to admit that I haven't the foggiest!!!) Boom Boom

A nite pic would be nice as well to show the big difference. Did u take any pics showing before and after picture?

To be honest, there is not a huge difference because I had upgraded bulbs in there anyway (the white light 100w H7s)
But the LEDs give out a slightly different tinge. There would be a huge difference between the 55w standard bulbs.

I don't know if it helps but this was the video taken with the 100w blue bulbs in before the LEDs were fitted
http://youtu.be/pdRPBOj9wYo

Not easy to compare as one is in the daylight and this is in the dark, but at least you can see here why I m saying that there is not a huge difference because the 100w bulbs are so bright and white anyway.

Hi,

I have changed the setting now so it should work this time (but I am a bit ashamed of the video quality!!!

Thanks for the video Steve,I can view it now too. Looks fab. Are the 55w legal and where can one, purchase the type you have as they look tops:)

Thanks

55W are legal, 100w are not (although that may be wrong, I am going on hearsay)
But I do not have 55w in the fogs, I have 100w in them in the video shot in the dark and I removed these and put LEDs in for the video shot in daylight.
The 100w H7s and the LED H7s are available on eBay for a reasonable price. But as I say, I believe the 100w are illegal so I cannot recommend them and this forum does not support any illegal use of any parts.

Just a brief update after a couple of days / nights of using the car after fitting the Auto Headlight kit.

While trying to test it and set it in daylight (by covering the sensor) I was sure that I had screwed up the settings and so I expected to have to play around with the settings for a long time to get it right. But I was wrong!!!

I took the car out just before it started to get dark and I always prefer auto headlights that light a tad early rather than late.
That is exactly how it worked, just at dusk the lights came on almost exactly the light level that I would normally have turned them on manually.
The sensor is very sensitive and in the dusk condition there was a bright patch in the sky and the light level was reasonably bright and so the lights switched themselves off. Then I pulled up in a narrow road behind a double decker bus and hey presto, the lights came on again (as they should when you are in a darker area.

So 10 out of 10 for the auto headlight operation.

The "coming home" function also worked a treat and it is crazy how such a basic function like this was so nice to have.
One thing that I will have to get used to and it was a tiny thing but the only minor negative in the whole kit.
As you get out of the car with the switch in the Auto position and the coming home lights operating, the "lights on" beep warns you that the lights are on (because the sidelights and tail lights also illuminate).
So for the first few times I waited just to make sure it went off as it should and it did, but now I ignore the "lights on" warning.

So for the coming home operation 10 out of 10 for the function (perhaps marked down to 9.5 out of 10 for the "lights on" warning?)

So probably the best £60 I have spent on the project so far!!!

Here in Sweden, dipped beams are mandatory, no matter the time of day. But if I had your auto dipped beams, I would be very happy if it didn't switch off. In other words, if it switches on while driving, I would want them to stay on until I stop the car and turn the ignition off. When I start the car again, the auto function can re-evaluate the darkness and decide if the beams should switched on.

Hi Gus
If you want the dipped beams to be on whenever the ignition us on and have the coming home options then you just have to cover the sensor so that it always thinks it is dark. You could tape it up and hide it with the control box.
But I am assuming that your A2 has the dipped beams set to be on while driving already?
