Automatic light + Coming / Leaving home

I prefer the fogs to, I also have led bulbs in them. It was said the a2 was 10 years ahead of it's time, and what's great is we find these little add on's to keep it up to date as time catches up with them :)

Yes indeed, it was that kind of thing that made me go ahead with the "project".

By adding all of these reasonably modern options I now have what is almost a brand new and current A2.

The side lights illuminate for that function but the settings are to have that with the fogs or the headlamps.

The side lights are not bright enough to do the job of illuminating your path to your door etc.

It could probably be tweaked to do this, but it would mean playing with the electronics I believe.
But if you don't have fogs then this is what you would get if it was left on the original settings, just sidelights (and rear lights too, I forgot to mention that,)

Thanks.
I thought i would check as my side lights will eventually be Audi Q5 DRL LED rods.

So i could have Xenons and DRLs light up? I have no fogs.

Yes, set the "jumper" tag to use the headlamps instead of the sidelights, but check the instructions regarding the fuse rating since you have Xenons. The instructions seem to indicate that you should use a higher rated fuse in that set up.

Reading on other forums, they advise against using the headlamps if they are Xenon, due to coming/leaving home function being short duration and apparently wears the bulb / ballast out.

I was having a play with what I am going to do and found i prefer the headlights as my fogs were converted to Hella DRL's and although bright, they dont really light the way enough. Personal preference I suppose.

Another issue is that when I originally did my re-wiring for my DRLs, I damaged the headlight switch, and had to glue it into the dash trim part on refitting. Soooo....... now i want to take it out of the trim again for the new switch, I cant as its glued in solid. Now got to source another light switch as you cant just buy the trim......annoying

John

The trims do come up occasionally, I sold one a couple of weeks ago.

I wouldn't buy a new one including switch, unless you sell the switch on afterwards to recoup some of the cost. But that is up to you.

I suppose you could also sell your old glued headlamp switch and surround too. The end result would be a new surround for you and not too dear after all?

Perhaps someone on here has a spare surround?

Steve B

Unfortunately not, there is no "Auto" setting on it and the illumination from the rear would not line up correctly.

I can honestly say that the icons being one step out is completely unnoticeable and I even forgot about that even after a couple of weeks of use. I tend to not look down at the dial when moving the switch ( a bit dangerous) and also, more to the point I now never have to touch the switch (If it gets foggy I would have to switch the fogs on, but other than that it is left completely alone.
Even when illuminated it still looks fine.

I am sure that you will get used to it quickly too and it does retain the OEM icons. The stickers don't look great in my view anyway. (Ok if you have badly worn icons, but even then I wouldn't use them)

Does the headlight switch unit on the a2 just pop out? Is it a case of prizing it out with a plastic trim remover?

Thanks,

Scott

Nooooooo!

All Audi light switches come out the same way. Push in (as in push towards the front bumper) the rotating part of the switch and turn clockwise - it'll only go a little way. Then pull the assembly back toward you and it all comes out.

Cheers,

Michael.

Thanks Michael, that saved me breaking something.
I have Only once removed a headlight switch and that was on a vw transporter when I was fitting a fog light kit to it, that come out in a similar way. I should have known!

Hi Scott, I hope the installations goes well enough, it was a doddle for me (I didn't care about the icons being one step out, it still looks OEM) so you should be fine.
By the way, I didn't mess around with the light sensitivity at all, it was fine, but you might prefer to disable the "tunnel" setting, it makes the thing just a tad too sensitive and people in front of you might think you are flashing them if you go under a series of bridges.

Thanks Steve, how do you go about adjusting the settings on it? I'll take it for a test before I start adjusting the settings anyway. Seeing as I'm not going to sell the a2 I don't think it matters about the icons either, I'd rather not chop in to anything. Tho it is a shame to loose the nice new one!

Keep hold of the new dial surround, there may be an option later.

The rough translation comes out something like this.

1. Auto-switching of low-beam and rear lights, when it´s dark. High beam switches on, when it´s even darker.
2. Automatic Coming/leaving home light-funktion
3. Plug and play installation (ok this was really obvious)

Switch functions

switch turning once vertical turning twice vertical

"0" off
"Auto" main lights
"low beam" city lights city lights and fog lights front city lights and fog lights (front and if present back)
"main lights" main lights main lights and fog lights front main lights (front and if present back)

Installation manual
1. Remove the old switch by turning it into "0" position and pushing the knob, then turn it clockwise 15 degrees to the left and pull it out.
2. Insert new switch: Connect the cable connection with the new switch and fix it. Turn the switch to the 2nd position, if fully functional low beam will turn on/off now.
3. Test: Cover the sensor with a fully light-tight object, front lights will light up for a second.
4. Search for a decent position for the sensor. Open up the fuse box and put out the sensor button. Glue it on the a-pillar, about 10 - 15 cm away from the roof, or where a-pillar and windsreen are joining. Please use hot glue for attachment.

Detailed installation manual

1. Before first use, please reset to factory adjustment. Adjustment as shown below:
"Auto -- 0 -- Auto -- 0 -- Auto" position lights and low beam flash, reset is done.
2. Power source for leaving home is position light, therefore replace this bulb (I think the fuse is meant here!) with a 20A, if you´re using Xenon-bulbs or your fog lights are consuming much power.
3. Red wire is the leaving home jumper and should be connected with the positive "+" of the flashing light. (Please do not connect to normal voltage, because otherwise fog lights and position light will constantly be on) (Ignore this you will probably not have a red wire)
4. Please make sure that the sensor is fixed at a well-lighted place
5. Unit will save light conditions when you turn on low beam. When it´s dark, use it like that: "Auto -- front light -- Auto -- front light -- Auto". Position and front lights will flash up once afterwards and current light conditions will be saved. If the current brightness is higher than the one at which the sensor is turning on the front lights, front light will not turn on by itself. If current light conditions are within saved conditions, front lights will turn on automatically.

I think the seller is mixing up several terms like "front lights", "low beam" and "position lights", not sure when to use which one.
The correct translation of parking light would be "Standlicht", low beam is "Abblendlicht" and high beam would be "Fernlicht".

Hi, I'm going to fit this after I pick my little man up from nursery (he wanted to watch/help :).) should I really be fitting it in a bright sunny day? Just the instructions say it saves from first turn on?

Thanks

I fitted mine in daylight and it was all ok. I just covered the sensor when testing it.
But it is better to test it in the darker light. Covering it does not always work as you would expect.

So fitted it earlier took me under 1 hour,

I filed a hole here

And fit the sensor here

The light come on them self at about 5:40pm today witch is probably a acceptable amount of light for the lights to come on but I'll work out for sure after a few days of driving.

Are the fog lights supposed to come on when you just unlock or lock the car? Or do you have to drive it in the dark 1st? I'd like it if they could!

Thanks

Scott

It is a great kit isn't it, easy to fit and cheap too.

The fog lights (coming home / leaving home) come on if it is dark and you have just unlocked or locked the car.

My car is set to unlock when you switch the ignition off and so I am not sure if your fogs come on when you switch the ignition off or when you lock the doors?

But you don't have to have driven the car at all to get this function to work.

Yes perfect! I just tried it again and it works fine! It wasn't dark enough earlier. I Love the kit just wish we could do something better with the symbols, it sits back a bit and my old ones are worn :(

Couldn't help but post this sneaky picture of after I washed it this morning. Damn she shines up good! This was only a wash and dry!
