Feeling like driving on ice

Thank you for your reply. I used to be computer and printer engineer and some of the printer’s I had to repair were very difficult and in some cases had to improvise to get them working , I could not turn round to my boss and say that’s too difficult I had just to get on with it. So when a garage starts making excuses about jobs that are difficult I don’t understand because working on cars is their bread and butter and they should have equipment and experience to enable them to complete a job in a timely manner.

They can absolutely do that as they most likely have plenty of work lined up without dealing with a 20 year old cars. :(

Years ago I had a 1986 Audi GT Coupe (donated to another enthusiast but that's another story) which had all servicing done by an excellent local guy. One day he straight up told me that he can't service the Audi any more. It is just too much effort with every single bolt being seized and he's just not willing to deal with it anymore, he's got plenty of 2-5 year old cars in the queue.

Can I blame him? No, he's got a very good point. He was also honest enough not to take the car in and do a half-assed job because it was 'too much work'.

If look at this post you would see that the previous owner has rebuilt most of the car over the last 18 months with a lot of new parts so they can’t be to many rusted bolts left. The mechanic was surprised that I supplied new parts I think he thought I would supply second hand parts but something that effects safety I would not do that as they could have been as bad as the ones on the car. I also went to Audi to see what parts were available which was not a lot but they printed a page from the parts list showing all the relevant parts and numbers.

Update on the saga. Been to another garage for the wheel alignment and front disc brake protector shields fitted. The garage fitted one disc protector shield but could not fit the other one owing to either previous owner or garage fasting the bolts at an angle so needs a new steering knuckle. I have now ordered one from eBay to be fitted by my regular garage in two weeks, then hopefully that will be the end of this saga. Regards the central locking not working I fully charged the battery last week and in freezing conditions the central locking worked fine. So it looks like the issue was the battery being drained owing to it been stood for two months. At least I can drive it now safely.

Personally I would have drilled the hole and put there helicoil or standart thread insert... Nevertheless I am glad you are moving forward with your car and I am little bit worried what will be next you will discover

I agree but it seems the average garage are incapable of doing this sort of thing. I hope you are wrong about anymore faults to be discovered.
