Heated mirrors question

Might be worth contacting Lau to see if he can effect a repair. Thoroughly check the mirror and wiring first though!

The mirror works, it's warming fast when connected to the right side, while the left mirror remains cold connected to the right side. It's easy to replace the cables, but if there's power problem in the card, then I can't do much.
Specialy not when it's raining and blowing like hell outside.

Darko,

Have you checked the continuity of the wires with a DVM? Should be zero resistance without mirror and the same as the mirror with mirror. If it's the card, Lau may be able to repair it.

I'll do that, RAB, as soon as the weather get's better. I saw on A1 forum that some guy upgraded his car with heated mirrors and had to do something with VAG-COM too, could it be that I had to do scan and maybe activate a thing or two?

Cheers,

If neither mirrors were working and they were verified good, then this might be the case, but with one working this isn't going to be the case.

For info though, you could check the following in VCDS:

CCCU (module 46)
Adaptation channel 60.
Check that the value is 1 and not 0

Cheers

I scanned it this morning. As Jeff said, CCCU (module 46), Adaptation channel 60, Check that the value is 1 and not 0 - the value was 1.
Here's the other stuff that popped up on the scan, I took screen shots, couldn't copi them for some reason.
Why some faults ae still there, beats me, I have no misfirings or problems with brakes!?

Looks like I have to replace the driver's side unit. It looks like the A8 units are exactly the same. Anyone know if I can use one of these?
Cheers,
Darko

Thanks, Spike, that helps! The A8 units look the same but the the parts numbers are different, so that won't be good. But, they used the same door control units in A4 2001-2005, the parts numbers are matching! The only difference is the letter code, A2's is 8Z1959801 and the A4's 8E1959801, I think.
Maybe it would be worth trying one!

The 8Z prefix means its unique to A2s but since the rest of the number is identical its possible the 'guts' of the unit are the same. The differences could be minor, like a mounting hole in a different place and you may be able to make one good unit out of the two but until you try, who knows.
It's always fun trying these things but be prepared to waste your cash.

Cheers Spike

I am now. I'll try to find a unit that's cheaper that what they sell for on ebay. I can get a new one for 185 Euro, I'm not paying that for 12-14 years old one.

Cheers,
Darko

Found a used unit on ebay, from Italian auto-demolisher, for 50 Euro plus 30 Euro postage. We'll see if it works, when it comes :)

Two days after I bought the Motorino from Italy, another one popped up on local web market, so I bought it. It's a brand new, 2014 production! I didn't know they still makes them. Now, all I need is a good wether.

Just replaced the 2003 unit with 2005 one. Everything work, except the heating :)
I think I don't have to check if it works with 2014 unit, the problem is somewhere else, I'm sure. Maybe the plug has misplaced contacts? I'll compare it with the passanger side, some day.

Darko

I took the mirror housing apart, but the cable is impossible to pull out! It's squeezed between the triangle metal mount and the plastic that covers it. So, the cable was fitted before the plastic cover was attached!
I wonder if one of the heater's wires was simply pressed and cut right there! I guess the heating never worked really!
Some plastic cutting and gluing will be necessary to replace the cable!

Cloning the wires and the guts from chb's mirror went just fine, everything works, except the mirror heating.

I don't think I'll spend more time with this thing.

It's interesting that I couldn't fit the LHD driver side mirror cover to the RHD passenger side mirror! The RHD passenger side mirror's internal console is more angled forward. If you know what I mean :)

I've only just read this thread...

Darko,

Is your CCCU coded correctly? For heated mirrors to work, CCCU Channel 60 must have value 1.

Cheers,

Tom

It's coded right, Tom, thanks. The other mirror heating works just fine.
