LED Headlight (H7) a strange little kit!!!

Are they much brighter than the conventional bulbs do you think now it's getting dark and you need to use them often?

I suppose I could show you?

How about you swinging out my way one night soon and you can see for yourself. I wouldn't like to tell you that they are brighter and have you buy them and be disappointed.
It is quite a subjective thing.

PM me and we can sort something out?

Right I have fitted mine, and its amazing!!! Such a clean white light that's pure white which is a good thing, its not on the blue side like HIDs which I also think is a good thing, i prefer pure white like the new Mercedes, may be abit too bright though and shine abit too high up for oncoming traffic and pedestrians, but I reckon removing the front L shaped chrome panel will fix this issue, will keep you updated

I am tempted to go with these .... (hot on the heels of my DRL's), but I'm concerned about your findings ... It has occurred to me that by its very design, the LED bulb is just a "stick" of light and doesn't offer much control of the way that the light is spread? Is there any obvious "beam" of light from the headlights? What is the method of tightening the spread of light into a well-defined pattern? [I may have got this totally wrong, so if that is the case, then I'll apologise for my ignorance!] Ricky ... have you actually got someone else to drive towards you in your own car, with the lights on, so that you can see for yourself just how bright the really are?

David

Hi David

The dipped beam lamp has a "shroud" built in to shape the shadow correctly. The LED bulb I gave only has the KED (SMD) "blob" on one side of the bulb. This makes sense because the filament bulb throws light in all directions wasting half of it (shining straight into the shroud).

If you look at the LED headlight straight on the whole headlight seems white but this is low level light. Lower your head and you eventually get to the edge of the shadow and get the full bright light.

The LED main beam bulbs have an SMD blob on both sides.

Effectively the shape of the beam on both is produced by the headlamp unit and not the bulb so it works as it should.

Having said that the beam pattern needs the light to be at exactly the right position (I.e. How far in the SMD is into the headlight unit)
So the end result is SOME low level light blead.
Look at oncoming cars that have white bulbs (HID or LED) and you will see that the headlamp seems to be fully and evenly illuminated and yet it doesn't dasske you (assuming that the aim adjustment is correct).
So I am happy enough with them and so far have never been flashed by any oncoming cars and when family members were used as guinea pigs in their cars, they said they were not dazzled in the slightest. But I will soon be showing these to Dan and it will be good to get his opinion. Much less biased than me.

Thanks for that, Steve!

So could you oblige me with exactly what I need for conversion of both main and dipped beams to LED's, where I should purchase them and at what cost? I am going to trust what you have said and go ahead with the conversion ...

Hi,

Contact Trups and EMTuning ([email protected]) and he will quote you for the two kits.

The Dipped beam are simple to fit, you will have to play around a bit to get the mains in but they definitely fit (with the wire "tang" filed down a little) I know you are very capable when it comes to things like this, so you will be fine.

The usual legal statement - I can't comment on the legality of these, but as I said in an earlier post, I checked with my local MOT station and they said that they would pass an MOT (in their opinion).

Cheers

This might be a tad over topic. I have shown interest in these LED kit as I am also into gadgets plus the A2 looks more modern with up to date lights.

At this very moment I have XENON kit on both driving light and long light(if that's what's called). It is 35w and 8000k, just that typical blueish look that Audi used to have before all their cars came with LED stripes.
My Xenon kit has lastes now for over 5years and some 120.000km going from my previous 1.2TDI to present TDI90. Im very shocked over this as I bought the kit from China for €90.

I am very interested in the LED kit, of course for all three lightbeams; driving, long beam and foglights. Will tho wait to see your result and judge from there. Im very happy at this moment with the XENON kit I got that it lasted this long but I also figure that its time to change to new fresh gadgets & todays tech that is offered.

Hi Maso,

that is exactly the same reason why I wanted these LEDs, I like gadgets and new technology.
Every bulb in our house is LED and has been so for years now and even though the bulbs were not cheap they have saved me lots of money over the years and the bulbs have never blown in that time. In my previous house I had a total of over 60 LED bulbs and saw a significant drop in electricity bills, but also it meant that I did not have to panic about leaving lights on by accident.

Same here. Swapped out every single 50W halogen in my house a few years back for 4W LEDs, saw an immediate and significant drop in my electricity consumption and the LEDs I've got are just as bright.

I did try LED side-lights in the A2 a few years back when I had HIDs but they kept blowing after just a few months (I suspect they were overheating). Have they improved now?

I'm very keen on some way to upgrade the A2's puny headlights - it's a visibility war out there! HIDs didn't work for me due to the RFI and issues with getting decent alignment, but if LEDs are a good new solution that would be great.
