New wheels but what tyres?

Are these Fat 5s from a Mk1 TT?
This thread tells you every single wheel/tyre size combination that works with the A2.

They are off a mk1 tt but apparently Iv been told the are only mistakenly known as "fat fives" they are called Audi TT competition alloys. Although they are "fat five spoke wheels" a different wheel is know as "fat five" that aren't as "fat"!??? Also they are 18"
Here they are

Great-looking wheels either way and they'll fit fine on your A2 with the right tyres. I've got Mk1 TT Speedlines on mine - similar design (less fat!) but only 16"!

A lot of the tt wheels do suit the a2 nicely! Iv seen tt comps on a2's before, a black set on a white a2 (remember the one with the check roof??) and a German black a2 with polished ones, I think they look amazing polished on a black car :(

If you put an A2 and a Mk1 TT next to each other, you can see the design similarities between the two quite clearly.

That's why I bought an a2, I loved the tt but couldn't get insured on it at 18 so bought the a2 pretty much because it had the same spoiler! I think the a2 is better now to be honest, I've used my bosses tt many times (convertible) and it's useless, with one passenger it was a nightmare getting McDonald's for 4 people back to work, just no where practical to put it! It was hard work!!

One thing I thought of today, do I need new/longer bolts for these wheels or will my original 16" se wheel bolts fit??

Thanks

Simple to check - just poke a bolt through the old and new wheel mounting holes and compare the protruding lengths.

And finally......

Final picture of them on the car will be in the new year as I can't afford the tyres before Xmas! Should have told my little boy I need tyres so he can't have a new bike ;)

Those wheels look ace Scott!

You're not wrong! My other half bought her TT a week before I picked up my A2 - you can see the family styling quite clearly side by side:

When it warms up a bit we'll muck about with the wheels and see what looks silly on the other one.. ;)

Also works with a Q7. Honestly!!!!
My children called my A2 the 'shrink car' as they thought it looked like a shrunken Q7. The cars are similar in profile. If only I had a picture...it wasn't allowed on the drive next to the Q7...

Nooooo.....not a Q7. That's like comparing a gazelle with an elephant. The Q7 designer must have been a fan of the latter.

Another question about my wheels, does anyone know or know how I can find out what size centre caps my wheels take? I want to get different ones for them. I have seen a nice set on eBay but the sizes vary.

What do we think of budget tyres? Any experience? I have been looking at tyre prices and I'm sweating! A decent tyre is between £90-£130 a tyre but a budget is beetween £50-£70?? Are budget any good?

Tyres are an important safety feature and so it would not be easy to state that cheap tyres are safe, or anything like that.

All I can say is that I have used Budget tyres on A2s on many occasions without problems.

One thing to consider is that many of the expensive tyres are built to sustain high speeds and high cornering forces.

A2s (in general) do not drive at high speed and with their light weight they do not normally sustain high cornering forces (as least I hope not).

So this does mean that you don't have to go for a high speed rating and that keeps the cost down.

But the sensible advice is to buy the best tyres that you can afford, because the whole of the car sits on a very small patch of rubber at each corner and so you need that rubber to be the best you can afford.

Iv always put continental tyres since Iv owned it, well since the Pirelli tyres wore out that were on it when I bought the car and they have always served me well. The good thing about the 16" is the tyres are pretty cheap I pay about £60 a continental tyre. Iv heard it's mainly the IMPORTANT wet grip they let you down with, I'll have to read some reviews or just buy a continental a month :) I havnt got a price for hankook tyres in this correct size yet so hopefully they will have a decent price tag.

There are lots of decent cheaper brand tyres but its worth doing your homework to ensure you don't end up with anything which verges on dangerous.

Even though its a winter theme at the moment there are lots of summer tyre tests covered here - http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/
