New wheels but what tyres?

Suzy's on 205/50/16 Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres front and rear

Winter wear are Vredestein Wintrac Xtream

Our reasoning: it's our only contact with the road...

Iv put brand new valves in already with slightly longer shafts so my dustcaps stick out further :) I'll probably use elite garages. £16 isn't bad I know. I also just finally checked my bolts to see if they were ok and they seem to be perfect. I expected that to be another hurdle in fitting these wheels!

I also weighed the wheels because I remembe someone saying the audi wheels are heavy on this or another thread and I thought my se and these wheels were pretty light (my se especially!) just the rim of the tt comp wheel is 11.4 kg and the tyres are 8.8kg each not too bad I'll see what the de wheel and tyre makes when I take it off, I've always been amazed how light they were!

I'll give a review of the tyres once I get them on and drive with them for a bit.

My 16's are wearing continental sport contact 3 all round simply because a good tyre doesn't code over £100 on a 16" wheel....

There is a simple formula that can be used when you are buying tyres, that is to buy the best tyres you can afford.

The slight advantage we have with the A2 is that the car is so light and does not have top cope with over 110mph and so the tyres are not on their limit.

If I was buying tyres for a BMW M3 for example, I would spend hundreds to get top quality tyres. The stress those tyres would take at high speeds and high cornering "G forces" is significant and chep tyres would be dangerous.

So as I say, buy the best you can afford, simples!!!

I have checked mine on the 17". They are Landsail LS988.
I was going to fit them tonight but came back home too late.
I'll let you know what the drive is with them.

Cheers

Also if you can afford an m3 then you should be able to afford a good tyre. At this moment in time I don't want to spend to much money as in out of work, I could have budgeted to about £250 for a set but these tyres popped up, they had very good customer feed back, the tyre label and good ratings and just on there physical appearance they look pretty good to me. I also like to think that I keep my car on the road not my tyres.
Because I like my a2 so much I would like the "branded" names on it and up until now it always has. I once brought brand new alloy wheels and tyres for my 106 and those tyres were budget ones (can't remember what) and I absolutely hammered that car, 90 mph around that bend on the m3 as you come off the m25 hand brake turn facing the other direction half way down box hill on one of those narrow roads and it gets worse! (17 years old just passed 1st car learnt from it.) and those tyres never let me down so come to think of it I think depending on the car they are going on a budget is perfectly fine. Well I'll find out anyway.

I had a puncture on my A2 last week, fortunately it was very close to home and so could leave the car parked up on the side street till they got replaced. I went for some Hankooks in the end, think they're 195 45 16's.

I was looking at hankook, they seem good, a thew car manufacturers are putting them on their cars as standard now

A friend of mine has a tyre shop and I was there when a guy asked for the price on some tyres, he had some DA tyres (defective appearance, perfect apart from cosmetically, a smudge on the lettering etc.) but the price was unbelievably low.

They guy effused them because they were too cheap.

Now I know that tyres are a vital part in any car and that is why I said that it is always best to buy the best you can afford, but cheap does not equal dangerous.

As Scott has demonstrated, the rating on the tyres he bought is excellent, much better than average and even though they are cheap they sound great value . So well done for finding those.

Thanks, yes I have gone for these tyre simply because of the ratings, the price is just a bonus. If they had bad ratings I wouldn't have gone there.

As for all your comments and some of you sticking your nose up to cheap tyres :) , I asked for you help so thank you for all your imput on this, it has all helped. Iv managed to get the tyres fitted and balanced for £30 :) thanks to my partners friends husband so very happy. That will be done Thursday night so I'll put them on Friday. I also brought some red caliper paint as the red on them now had faded since I done them 4+ years ago!
I'll post pics hopefully Friday with the wheels on and I'll give feed back of the tyres on Sunday/Monday because Im going from eastbourne to London and back Saturday on them :)

Thanks again for help and input it's all appreciated

Exactly - that's why I only buy Michelin Pilot Super Sport for my M3 ;)

I recently picked up some cheap 15" alloys for my little A2 with a view to refurbishing them over the spring. Then I'll be getting some half decent tyres with good efficiency ratings but certainly nothing rock hard and "ditchfindery"

Excuse the wrecked wheels!

Also whilst the car was on the jack I thought I'd re secure the underneath of the bumper because I caught it reversing on a curb. So I refixed the bumper with the three torx screws then thought I could do better that audi and put 1 more either side of them. I got a tiny drill piece and drilled a hole through the bumper.... Then through the undertray then it hit a 3rd thing and I stopped. I thought it can only be the plastic radiator housing so no need to check! So drilled through it and a lovely little trickle of water started coming out!! I hit the washer fluid bottle!! I had to take the undertray down drill the hole bigger and put a rubber grommet in it! What a stress!

I arranged fitting the tyres to the rims for Thursday night but the courier company lost two tyre so the seller sent another two out special delivery and I got them today. Now I can't get them fitted (for the price of £30) until Monday :( so the wheels WILL be on the car Tuesday!!
Untill then they will have to sit in the garage! :(

And finally....
A sneek peak untill tomorrow when I can get a proper shot...

Had a 45 minute drive on the way back with the new ones on and tho it isn't much of a test I am already very happy with the ride quality, I'd dare say it's better and a softer ride than the 16's! The tyres seem good to! Tho obviously they are not beaded in properly yet the grip was good and I had some rain half way home and didn't notice any difference and I didn't Change the way I normaly drive. Over all I am very happy :))

Finally, summer tires fitted. Vredestein Ultrac Cento 205/45 ZR17 on mu refurbished Boleros. Really nice ride, comfortable and low noise.
The rims looks good but I am not fully satisfied with the colour. They had a limited number of powder coating colour options to choose from and this was the closest to silver. I think I will put on a top layer of Silver spray.

Very nice, Iv noticed with the tyres I have fitted that they are really quiet! I havnt done many miles on them yet but so far I am happy with them.

Now done over 1000 miles on the new wheels and tyre and I'm really happy with them, I have pushed it a bit around bends and grip has been really good, a lot of lean from the car but the tyre held out. What I am noticing is the tyre is rubbing the inner rear arches when there is a lot of weight in the car and leaving the tyre looking like this!

This is how low the car was loaded up with two adults two children and lots of camping stuff!
