Pretty gutted :(

Phoned up my insurance and they said if an assessor comes round and decides it's beyond economical repair there's no going back, so I have put the claim on hold until I get some quotes. My main worry is the dent in the roof , being aluminium is it more expensive to repair ?

Really sorry to read this, what rotten luck. Hope a sensible and cost effective solution can be found and agreed with the insurers so you are not unduly out of pocket and the car avoids being written off.

Unlucky mate, always a shock to see your pride and joy damaged. Ours is nowhere near as pristine as many on here and has quite a few "age related marks" yet every time I spot a new one it still p155es me off. I'm sure you can get it reasonably done although maybe time for that respray you mentioned.....?

Just got quote from chips away and it's a lot more than I thought.

Front bumper - £20
Roof - £290
N/S front door £140
N/SIZE rear door blend £100

Including VAT that's a total of £660

They won't write the car off for that so I think your ok there Paul!

Thanks. Insurance has been contacted and the ball in is in motion, just waiting to hear from the assessor, I know it shouldn't be written off for £660 of damage but there is that little worry in the back of my mind.

that is bad luck!

could be worse the insurance company could hit you with the 'act of god' crap ;) and get nothing!

all joking aside my high fence blew down a few years back and fortunately for me the renault rx4 was the stop gap between my a2 being scratched etc... i coudnt give a monkeys about the renault :)

im always weary now when high winds and storms happen and tend to park away from roof just in case something similar happens. i only hope you have a smooth transaction from the insurance company as this is usually hit and miss in my experience :/

hopefully the dent can be repaired to near original look as i wouldnt worry too much about the scratches.

get the shot gun ready as the word 'write off' seems to bring out the vultures ;) but this is far from a write off so its all good :D

Thanks, when I phoned the insurance they said they had to check what the weather was like on that day, they came back to me and said the wind speed was 20mph so it wasn't a storm which has to be 50mph +

Have a look into the dent fix guys, even if the dents are scratched at least your car won't have filler in it if they can get it all out, deny fix isn't too expensive and most places do a hole car price, if I remember rightly it's around £140 for unlimited dents. Then try having it machine polished (I don't know how bad the scratches are) and get the worst repainted. Having it dent fixed might save some cost with the paintwork too as they won't have to strip, fill and prime as much for painting.

I doubt they will use chips away for the repair and I personally wouldn't as the few bits of work I have seen done by them, would have been done better by Stevie Wonder.

If it were me I would ask what the maximum they would pay out on the car before economic loss and then ask for a cheques to do it yourself they normally give -10% then you could get a full respray and the car doesn't get a cat marker on it.

I did this with a previous car in fact that company were happy to repair to market value plus 10%

Wow. Didn't know that. I waiting back for a quote from a bodyshop who said the insurance should cover the majority of the body damage except the rear but they are quoting me separately. So do I phone my insurance up and ask them the maximum they would pay out or would I have to wait until the assessor views the car?

I forget the exact sums now but it was my Mrs car a Nissan Micra value about £500 on a good day. Some idiot drove down the side of it and I was over the moon as hated it and wanted rid.

Spoke to her insurance and they said they had the car valued at £2000 which it was when she first insured it with them many years earlier and they said the repair the paint shop had quoted was £2100.

So i thought great they will write it off jobs a good un. But no they said we will repair to insured value plus 10%.

I tried to say this was ridiculous just write it off but they wouldn't. I spoke to my dad who is an insurance investigator and he said I can just ask for a cheque and carry out the repair myself.

So rang them and said this and they said no problem but they would drop the body shop quote 10% so I ended up with about £1600 and still had the car with no write of category on it.

I the sold the car as was for about £250 so was win win.

Now if this had been my A2 instead I would have done the same and had £1600 to spend on repairs and no write off marker.

You need to find out if you have an agreed value or market value and agree the price. Then find out what they would pay out for repairs before writing it off and then agree a sum from there.

Or let them write it off and get the value for and buy it back but obviously it will have a marker on it the. Which will effect its value long term.

I hope this makes sense

Phoned up the insurance and asked about getting the quote in a cheque but they said the accesor has to look at it first, so if they decide to categorise it then that's it.

Sorry to hear of your woes Paul.
You're welcome to call if you need a sympathetic ear or advice.

Thanks Tony, I'm just waiting for the assessor to come see the car, everyone says that it's hardly noticeable but the thing is I know it's there and Crazylegs knows how much my paintwork bothers me and that was before the roof tile decided to fall. Hoping they don't right it off. Even if they do I'm keeping it. And my other worry is I bet they decide to fix it when AITP is on :(
