Project ‘Bob’ AKA ‘Bread-209’ 1.4SE

Removed the radio and tried to remove the centre vent today in an effort to fix my cupholders, but gave up on the vent as the hazard connector wouldnt budge. Looks like the small plastic tang has broken off, so after 30 mins of trying, decided the cupholders could wait another day.

Whilst I was in there though I thought I’d take a look at the BlueMusic adaptor, as I had a microphone that came with the car but wasnt connected. Worked out a route without me needing to remove lots of trim (I’m finding out quickly that the A2 has lots of it and they havent scrimped anywhere!), and decided placement up to the left of the binnacle would be fine for now.

The only apetures available to me were under the steering column surround and the side openings behind the radio. So I took 3 x long zip ties and found my route up and through. I then taped the microphone end to the zip tie and pulled it very carefully through the side of the central console, down and up under the sterering wheel. After placing the mic in situ, I used a trim tool to press the mic wires into the trim shut lines and tidied up the excess wire behind the radio, before plugging the 3.5mm jack into the BlueMusic adapter.

This is when I noticed the BlueMusic dongle didnt have a connected ground (!). Whoever installed it must have got lucky and had it rest against the body of the radio, so I undid one of the side screws to the radio unit itself and attached the ground properly.

All back in place and works lovely. Here’s a picture of the microphone placement. One day i may take it up and into the map reading cavity, but for now its fine.

Remember to grease the sides of the straps a couple of times a year for extra longevity

Sorry to thread-swerve, but Paul do you mean the top and bottom or the actual sides? Where exactly should the grease be applied?

To the SIDES of the strap. Where the roller sit on the strap

Quick update. Took ’Bob’ over to Kent Automotive for its new cambelt kit and and waterpump. Dropped off at 0800 and was all ready for collection at 1500. Minutes away from Maidstone town centre too, so I worked out of various coffee shops until ready. Highly recommended.

They were great. Very friendly and also advised on a few things whilst in there - slightly corroded front discs (knew this as it had been sat a while), low oil, which they topped up FOC. Lastly they noted the key didn't work from the fob, which I’ve just reset, so all good there too.

Drove home through the rain and tested the single wiper which seems to work well. As an added bonus I also noticed the rear screen below the spoiler stays free of water so you always have a clear view out the back.

Loving the drive of the A2. Feels like a small minibus and what it lacks in grunt it more than makes up for in charm.

Monday I have a free Audi health check booked in. More out of interest than anything else; see what they pick up on.

Just back from Audi South East London after a free health check. Got a video of the underside and a clean bill of health. In fact they even commented on how clean it was for a 2004 car. Bonus wash and vacuum to finish things off.

Still loving the drive and more so now I have had the cambelt and waterpump done. Worked out she likes to be revved and looking forward to a longer journey out next time.

Noticed the passenger side window isnt operating from the passenger door though (operates fine from the drivers side). Replaced the motor a week or so ago, so cant be that. Going to try disconnecting the battery and see if that resets things.

No real update other than how useful is that rear spoiler when parked up in a garage?! I've been working on my motorcycle and its the perfect height and width for resting screws, bolts and tools on as I work close by.

Audi really did think of everything with the A2.

You could try dismantling the switch. My son's Caddy had an intermittent fault. Took the switch apart and noted corrosion on the contacts. Cleaned them and it worked a treat.
Dismantle carefully and take lots of photos so you remember how to re-assemble.

Good advice, and will do. Might be swapping the door cards for the black-with-blue-arm ones that came with the blue leather sports seats I installed recently, so a good opportunity to dive in.

Question: do you think black door cards with the blue arm rests might make the interior a little too patchwork, given the rest of the interior is beige and dark grey? Thinking I might leave it as is.

Option 3: Recolour the seats. What colour do you think would work well inside this Dolphin Grey / beige interior beast?

I’d probably go with either:

1) Graft the blue arm rests onto the current grey doorcards (look for the how-to from Timmus I think in his Japier Red project thread ).

2)Recolour the seats and arm-rests to match. Go to colours for me would be: dark red (oxblood style) or black. Purple actually works well with grey, but only if you really love purple!

Good luck with the decision!

Cheers,

Stuart

I hadn’t thought about the grafting option. Thats inspired! I’ll check out Timmus’ project thread.
Also like the sound of oxblood or black seats too….decisions!

Mixing doorcards so that they don't match the plastic trims doesn't work in my opinion. Possibly if you were to keep the top section in the original colour it might be OK, but that one's the worst to reattach firmly. However the armrest swap is easy, holds well and the blue should work beautifully with your Platinum interior. I've seen exactly that done in real life before, also photos of red on Twist (beige/cream).

👍🏼 do you have a link to the method of swapping armrests? I can’t seem to locate via the search function.

The search function on this site is not as good as using Google with 'site:a2oc.net' plus your search terms. One result I obtained that way explains pretty much everything, and there are plenty more where that came from. I've done what you're considering myself, using M6 kitchen cabinet screws, the 16mm ones are idea for the armrests.

Sorry for the confusion - it was the other ‘2Work’ Tom’s thread with the direct post I was thinking of:

Evening Stuart.

No problams at all. There are a few Tom’s on here and some get us confused with one another often.

The below link is also quite useful where I show how to remove and refit the door card armrests using some kitchen cabinet screws that Ian @Proghound donated a few years ago. I’ve purchased a couple of bags since then as I’m a massive fan of painting the leather door card armrests:

Kind regards,

Tom

Evening,

Should you choose to recolour and leather items then I can confirm that Furniture Clinic products are brilliant. Not had any fading or wearing of the items I’ve treated over the last few years.

Kind regards,

Tom
