Quick squeaky starter fix
Unbolt starter as above ish. Remove earth, i left live connected
You did put the car on ramps first, , lay under car , pull back the motor and let it hang downwards on the wires and various pipes and brackets kind of comfortably hold it there.
You are looking at a cog with an enclosed cone of aluminium behind it, two Allan bolts obviously hold that cover on.
If you pull them bolts , they run right through and into the back of the starter. Leave them and fiddle not.
I saw a new chinese ebay starter for £26,,, so I tried this.
Work out a topside of the starter position on that cone.
Have a rough idea of what is inside the cone,, sealed from motor bendix.
Cos you can get a new motor for £26 if you wreck it,, here we go.
Cone is above your head , you are lying on floor, drill a small hole where you think appropriate on the aluminium cone ( bendix housing ).
Stop on breakthrough, use an 8 mm ish drill and before drilling read this next bit.
The 5 ml ish syringe you pre acquired , needs to be able to function , no needle , lol . In this area
So your bigger drill can aim where you think best. Think keep swarf out of starter, pull out then return and breakthrough.
Airgun if you’ve got it. Bit of aluminium swarf won’t hurt, apart from your remove replace bolting abilities, what you do now determines whether you saved yourself the twenty six of a new one, the workbench strip clean and fiddle.
Brake cleaner, wd40, and molycote etc of your choosing can all be sent in via their aerosols wee tubes. Copper slip or your favourite grease can go in the syringe and squished in.
Then carefull thorough cleaning right around the hole,,, thinners.
Catalloy the hole and don’t send catalloy into bendix,, at least check it turns when set.
Thumb spread a dod of sealant over the area,,, oil to flywheel risk, though unlikely if hole is upper when you reboot and earth it, as thats what gets done next.
Start car
Forget squeal, tidy up
