Squealing Starter Motor

Hello can any one give me some tutorial how to remove the starter motor from audi a2 1.4 aua engine?

Did some searching and found a few people have done this, found it a pain to remove, but not provided any constructive advice. The only 'snippet' which may help was from A2driver who suggested removal of the passenger side wheel and inner arch liner to make access easier.

Cheers Spike

Do I need any special tools to perform this?

I'm handy with spanners and tools. DIY and time isn't a problem for me. But don't want to start disconnecting gear linkages and things if I need a special tool / knowledge to reconnect them back up?

Is this a bolt off, clean, bolt on type job?

Cheers Jay

Post #5 of this same thread gives you a step by step guide. No special tools are required.

You can remove the starter motor without disassembly the AC system. No special tools need i thing (but in my case i have a full machine workshop so i may forgot about what i use).

I have dropped it off at STR in Norwich this morning who are taking it off, cleaning it and greasing it up for me all for £90 drive in, drive out. Fair price IMO as I don't have the time to do it and don't want it to end up stuck on my drive with a starter motor in bits!

Thanks for the help!

When you consider labour charges I suppose that the price seems fair enough.
Plus you don't have the hassle (or the dirty or scraped fingers).

So not bad. Some people might point out that you can get a reconditioned stater motor for that amount, or slightly less, but that does not include fitting etc.

So in your position it looks like you have found a reasonable solution

All fixed, just picked up the car and its perfect. Silent. He did say it was pretty crappy and dried up a fair bit.

If I was going to go to the effort of changing the starter motor, it would be a new one! Which you're then getting on to about £160 + labour.

The way I see this fix is that it's cost £90 drive in, drive out. If the problem arises again i'll put a new one on.

That is perfect then, as you say, drive in and drive out, job done!!!

Another Starter Motor

My starter has been sqealing for a while, so read this thread. I took the lower engine cover off, disconnected the battery and removed the motor completely. Not difficult. Stripped the motor and found the solenoid clean and well lubricated. I used graphited grease on the end bushes and a little on the planetary gears and bevel on the armature shaft. Reassembled and Heh presto! the motor is silent and I think it spins the engine quicker. Hope the photo is attached as I am better with spanners than iPads. Ps. I was robbed coz I used 3 pence worth of grease.

Yes, it is a useful little forum isn't it.

Lots of tips and money saving threads like this one.
It is always great to hear that it has been useful, thanks for the feedback.

As for the huge expense you had to lay out to do this, 3p may be a lot, but I do not know how to cut that back much further? If anyone knows how to trim this back to 2p that would be useful?

lol.

So nice to know that this noise is nothing serious - I did wonder!

So would you consider this something a non-mechanic could do in the driveway?

Cheers,

Andy

Mine does this intermittently, i was going to get it sorted. But i cant be bothered with the fiddling around. At some stage i may end up sorting it out.

Yes, it is not high up I the "to do" list. It can last for years like that.

Having said that, next time you are doing anything in that area it is worth doing just to stop the passers by looking at you and thinking "that sounds knackered".

Lol
