Squealing Starter Motor

sorry, I didn't answer the gentleman.

I haven't cleaned it 'cos I'm not great in the mechanics dept. I can only spend money on things that are vital!

It doesn't need replacing just cleaning out its just dust thats, just about all do it on the A2, still need to do mine

Cheers Phil

nahh

I will change for a new unit im not taking it out to keep cleaning it . Audi said this needs to be replaced !

Audi needs business!:D Don't always do what the stealers tell you, because you'll end up spending lots of cash, especially when you consult a forum that tells you a DIY clean is sufficient and will do the job...

Why not just get it overhauled then must be cheaper, if it needs re-cleaning maybe its just the end bush/bearing that needs replacing, its got to be worth getting a quote

Cheers Phil

good luck with that and genuinely wish the new one doesn't make the noise for some time.

But I would have thought after everyone's opinions, it is obvious to think a) it is a common case, b) doesn't matter, I alone have had it for 4yrs and c) It will happen again with a new starter motor eventually anyway :)

noise

how can you put up with that loud noise for 4 years as for damage to your car it sounds awfal every time i start the engine !!

There's a nak to it: Take your finger off the trigger at precisely the right moment in between the starter running over and the engine starting!!

I've had the same problem since I bought the car and I don't know where exactly is the starter placed on 1.4 petrol Type AUA.If anybody can spare me the time to look for it... I would like to clean it up.

Mine does it too, but only in wet conditions, especially last winter. Now it is ok. I'll wait taking it off until it has a constant squeal.:D

Different people, different tolerance I guess :) Initially, I was bothered about the noise. But who cares once the car is started and running smoothly. Especially I've since heard it on many cars, not just A2 or Audis.

Trex, you reminded me, I think mine is like yours! It is very hot now and I don't get the same noise I definitely had in the winter! Funny, hey?

Hi guys,
Just thought l'd tell you all about my experience today. Took advantage of a sunny day on my day off work ( a rare occasion this day and age ) and got under the car and removed the tray to look for a mysterious water leak l've suddenly got - looks like the waterpump -( another story ), so not being able to cure the waterleak l decided to take the starter motor off because l've had the squelling starter for the past 2/3 years.

Eventually removed the starter, after struggling to get the top bolt out ( had to slacken off the gear shift linkage in order to slide bolt out under it - tried all different positions with the gearstick) then set about to strip the motor and clean and lube it.
Unfortunately , all three small soleniod set scews - with the star head type torx socket (?), were rusted solid and l managed to round them off without them moving at all !!!
Running out of time, l decided to refit it and order a new one sometime later on, but before putting it back on l pulled out the pinion gear from the motor as much as l could and sprayed WD40 all round it hoping it would seep down inside and do something.
Chucked it back on and bolted it up, and reconnected the battery.
On first start up - surprise !! No noise. Thought , got to be a fluke. Try again, no noise !!
Can't believe it. Looks like l've finally solved the problem after all this time with a simple spray of WD40. We'll see how long it lasts though .
Now, just got the waterpump and EGR valve to sort out now !!!

By the way. If anyone decides to take off the motor and disconnects the battery to do the job, don't shut your boot lid down like l did. Ain't half a pain climbing over the back seats to get into the boot to reconnect the battery !!!

jimbobaroo, nice one! thanks for the update, I'll do mine before it gets cold (which was when it made the noise).

You're not alone finding out the emergency door opening routine :) haha.

P.S. Good luck with the leak hope it is easy fix.

Hi humps, Good luck with the starter motor. give yourself plenty of time when you do it, theres not much room down there to play with and top bolt can be a pain getting it out. Re the boot shut , I tried the emergency pull cord but nothing happened, hence the scramble over the back seats.
You could leave the battery connected like someone did earlier, but l didn't fancy that. Don't like electric shocks !!

As regards the water leak some Radweld has cured the problem for now, but l know its only a temporary measure. Got to earn some more cash before it leaks again. :-(

When disconnecting the battery I always place a rolled up old towel on the boot lip to prevent the tailgate shutting

Wise move to disconnect the battery when removing the starter. In my youth I once shorted out a live starter cable with my stainless watch strap. It melted a couple of links and burnt my wrist.

Cheers Spike

I'm a pretty able diyer, is it straight forward, or am I likely to open it up and things start springing off and end up stuck!?

I've just fixed the indicator problem which was fun (But easy)

Hi all.
Just a quick update. After the squirt of WD40 on the starter motor ( see above post ) the noise has just faintly and intermitantly started to come back, but only just noticable, so its not lasted all that long which was expected. But its an ideal choice if you're wanting to get rid of the noise for a short while, ie if you're selling or trading the car in ; ) Not that l'd do that !!!
Also, checked out my local GSF car spares shop this week and they stock 2 types of starter motor for the 1.4 petrol. One at £58 + VAT ( in a plain brown box ) , and one at £98 + VAT ( abranded make ) both exchange units.
So if you're handie with the spanners and got a couple of spare hours and £66 to spare you can easily solve the problem once and for all.
No need to take to the stealers and getting charged £200 plus !!
Hope this info is usefull to some of you out there with the embarassing squelling starter motor.
