Trim swap over

Yes it wasn't easy but I thought it wasn't much to loose

The seats in my eyes fit as secure as they would in a factory 5 seater

Could we please have some photos of what you've done and verification of what VOSA says upon inspection as you sensibly state you're having it checked.

I get it that 5 into 4 will be intrinsically safer by the factor of a single rather than split unit however as this is a critical safety matter for rear seat passengers and much discussed over the years - I'm concerned that others may make safety critical errors on reading that a swap can be achieved after a days work.

Any technical help you can provide to assist with this matter would be gratefully received.

Don't worry I am having it checked by VOSA!!

Hi Nat,

If you have come up with a well engineered and safe solution to this then I take my hat off to you.
But since the mountings have to take the strain of a couple of adults plus the weight of the seats and be strong enough to hold back the "several tons" of weight (due to the inertia) of an impact and having to prevent movement via the seat belt mounts in the seats it is something that I personally would not recommend and it would worry me greatly if anyone does this to their A2.

Since you have not mentioned how you achieved this we have to err on the safe side and state that we as a club cannot support the modification.

I hope you understand?

Blimey; so we did mate, completely escaped me when I posted at the outset of this thread - although on point with advice.

The counsel from Steve & Murdo is sound and a very sensible precaution in the interests of the safety of Nat, family and passengers, as much as the wider community. It will be interesting to learn of the outcome of the inspection, but suspect if it were that straight forward a modification, the Audi accountants might want extra details from the design engineers as to why the company invested in two separate floor pans. Perhaps explains some of the financial loss on the A2 though... ;)

As I work as a safety lead, I would naturally stress the importance of not carrying rear passengers until the inspection has been conducted and perhaps even greater assurances completed.

if you cast your grey cells back DC, you'll remember that we tried it with out cars - the mounting points differ sot hat the single 'lock' on the bench doesn't correspond with the two 'locks', one on each 50/50 seat

the pictures here tell the tale: https://a2-freun.de/forum/showthread.php?t=30111

Simple translation: the aluminium alone is not enough to hold the bench in the case of a crash and is *not* the sole means of anchor for a bench. There are two different sections of shell; the main reason appears to be that the twin seats are anchored in three places and the holes for the bench go through into a steel plate under the aluminium.

VOSA may well approve it. You'll only find out it's not enough when you get hit from behind at 30mph and the bench goes flying along with its occupants.
