if you cast your grey cells back DC, you'll remember that we tried it with out cars - the mounting points differ sot hat the single 'lock' on the bench doesn't correspond with the two 'locks', one on each 50/50 seat

Simple translation: the aluminium alone is not enough to hold the bench in the case of a crash and is *not* the sole means of anchor for a bench. There are two different sections of shell; the main reason appears to be that the twin seats are anchored in three places and the holes for the bench go through into a steel plate under the aluminium.
VOSA may well approve it. You'll only find out it's not enough when you get hit from behind at 30mph and the bench goes flying along with its occupants.
