Wont start after engine rebuild

Pretty sure its where it was supposed to go, the pipe was exact length and the bends in the pipe was going to that exact spot plus the hole was a bit of a giveaway :) and I was getting a power steering light on the dash

Feel a bit stupid posting this with all the erudite posts above, but it reminds me of a problem I had with a petrol engine that had been stood for a long time and would not start. Changed spark plug, filters, oil etc and still no joy. In desperation I drained the petrol and replaced with fresh and it started first time. I concluded that petrol like beer goes flat after a while, mind you it was a lawn mower and simple to drain the petrol, cap off and turned it upside down:)

Don't give up, just an idea.

I’m going to sound silly too but if there was some water gathered in the tank - perhaps an emulsion of the detergents and anti-knock anti foam spark retardant anti corrosion additives you get in fuel - wouldn’t this settle to the bottom as the previous poster suggested? Maybe siphon off as much as you can and chuck in some new fuel and let it run out of the fuel lines freely to purge them and bung in a new fuel filter and see what happens? Ps. I’m just guessing but I have seen a fuel tank on a taxi poured out after a couple of years of high mileage use and there was a lot of frothy crud sitting in the tank. He said he used supermarket fuel and the other guys car, who bought premium, had nothing in his tank when checked.

I still suspect the ignition and injection timing - have you checked with a strobe / timing light were the spark is being delivered should be 8 to 12 deg Before Top Dead Centre

Cheers,

Well guys the fuel idea is a good point and I have thrown a jerry cans worth of new fuel in already but I think I will drain it and fill it with fresh stuff asap. Also when the engine is running I push on the throttle and the engine does nothing ?? I can hear the throttle body opening but the engine does not rev up ??? Only a couple of times it has worked, mainly when I shut the engine off and hold the throttle down then start it up at the same time and it comes to life and revs up lovely but it does not rev back up if I let it go down ?

As for timing paul, no not yet :-( I was going to try and borrow one tomorrobut dont have a clue how to use one

Since the throttle is electronic, it would be worth checking the connections.

VCDS also has a measure that will show you what it thinks that the throttle position is.

It might be worth checking the readings you are getting from the throttle electronics.

I have tried a different throttle body and it did the same but as I said it does open when I put the throttle down but the engine does nothing other than splutter a bit? I have also looked at the wiring and it looks fine.

Unfortunately, I haven't got VCDS although I do have allot of OBD leads one or two of which are VAg

If it was fuel starvation then the symptoms would be as you describe, opening the throttle allows more air in but without the fuel it becomes too weak and does nothing or dies.

Have you been able to check the fuel pressure?

Steve B.

You are right and no I haven't been able to check the pressure as I haven't the tools to do so :-( but as I said in another post when removing the inlet fuel hose the pressure didnt seem to be much atall compared to removing a fuel rail on another car

I do have quitea few obd leads and I'm sure one of them is compable with VAG, do I just need the software then ? Any idea if I can download it ?

Yes, VCDS lite is available for free dl here... http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds-lite/

Only offers very basic functions unless you register it for $99 though.
If there are multiple faults for one module, the unregistered version blanks the details of all but the first error with messages to register to see the full info.
It's useful to use the free unregistered version to ensure your cable is compatible before splashing out, though.
Once registered, very useful!

Having read the thread I’m interested too. Far too much sensor this and that for me to understand. Looked like fuel starvation to me.

Do a2s have a gauze filter inside the fuel tank for fuel delivery( a filter before the filter) ? Just a thought as My old mk2 golf gti suffered from the exact symptoms and it turned out to be fuel starvation due to blocked pick up point in the fuel tank.
