Today I.....

.... Something struck me as odd. A question; why are the rear wheel bearings protected by a cap on the hub and the front are not?

Andy
Stops muck getting to the N/S rear nut and the risk of it turning itself off?
I thought it strange that nut didn't have a LH thread.

Tonight.... I bought a set of 15’ pepperpots with tyres for the £225 A2.

Collecting next weekend unless anyone is in the Barnstaple area beforehand?

Discovered that, something like a 2CV, my A2 has a wine carrier:

Dumped a bottle of this in my fuel tank:

I'm not a lover of additives but I've had a problem with my Mrs's Merc. It needed a new (reconditioned) turbo actuator to solve a misfire on kick down. The problem was solved for several months but came back recently despite the actuator appearing to work correctly. The supplier suggested the variable turbo may be a bit sticky at the extremities of movement and suggested two bottles of Forte Turbo Cleaner. I was a bit concerned a load of crap would be dumped in the Cat but the car is smoother, more economical, much much more responsive and fixed.

OK my A2 does not have a variable turbo but the treatment claims to be good for cleaning the AGR valve and I suppose therefore also the manifold downstream of the AGR and the tops of inlet valves too. No harm in cleaning the turbo vanes either.

Will report later.

Yesterday I drove to Sheffield and back. First point do not go anywhere Sheffield center at 17.30 on a week day; it is a full on congested horror story, with badly signposted one way systems and bus lane, gates etc.
While I had a hard time the A2 mopped up its 140 miles more smoothly and responsively than it has run in some time. Verdict; Forte Turbo Cleaner has provided benefits with the car running smoother, quieter and slightly more responsive.

Do tell us more about Forte turbo cleaner, is it an additive you add to oil?

No @rosscanning you put it in the fuel tank. I connected the EGR to ensure the cleaning properties reached the top of the engine and drove steadily until the tank was almost empty. Fill with fresh diesel and then off for an Italian engine tune up.

Worked on our Merc, but that had a sticky variable turbo, and improved the Audi that had no significant faults. It was recommended by a company that sold me a turbo actuator for the Merc after I reported the actuator had not fully solved a misfire.

Dropped of my new pepperpots for a refurb and new quality Dunlop winter tyres on order.

I thought the "Autogrip" tyres were bad when I looked up reviews, one wheel had a "Triangle" tyre. Reviews for this were more scary, and comical such as: "My ex wife had 4 of these these fitted to my car and increased my life insurance, needless to say when it rains these tyres are deadly. If you value life pay another £40 per tyre" I guess that's what you get if you spend £30 for a tyre!

Today I installed the Osram Nighbreaker Laser H3 bulbs to compliment the H7s. What an improvement! It seems that the lamp units don’t go back in the same position so I may have to realign them.

I also got round to fitting the replacement intercooler pipe and associated rubber bush and as a result the engine seems somewhat quieter.

Today , or rather yesterday I called into WOM Autos, and had a test drive in Basil

Basil is alive , and very much a fixed car !

Couple of bits to complete , and a wheel bearing packed up during extend testing ... so will be a futher couple of days to rap up the works and get the car back

Amazing rebuild of my ATL engine , turbo , the installation of the MYP gear box , plus a “Tom “ intercooler, double din dash board Audi A1 flat bottom wheel etc , remap EGR deleted etc

Once I get a 1/2 day spare , I will write a detailed report on to the ATL engine rebuild ,pitfalls and easy wins

So following “Basils “ new heart, I assuming when he get the magic 200 k , I will not be able to claim that prize !!!!!

Couple of bit I am still looking for , set of front mudflaps , or just the drivers side ....

Please find a couple of phots for amusement and entertainment over your cornflakes....

I love those engine shots, it makes me want to take mine out just so I can get it that clean!

...today I will be replacing my thermostat on Heu followed by giving Bert a final clean and removing a last couple of bits as he is sold as of tomorrow.

Today I removed my TT 7-spoke 16" wheels and refitted my original SE 16" wheels - I'd say it's for winter, but we don't really get much of that down at this end of the country. I think of it as 'pothole season' instead, which extends to about May by the time they've sorted them all out again. The slightly taller sidewalls (185/55 vs 195/50) on the SE wheels will help cushion the ride slightly, plus the TT wheels are rather corroded on the inside so I don't really want to use them on any more salty roads.

Many thanks to Tom (@2work) for assistance last night fixing the bonnet on Thunderbird as the latch had got gunged up and I couldn't get into the bonnet.

Also, for the advise on lightswitches etc.

Cheers Tom!

Having changed all my front end components shockers, top mounts, drop links, arb bushes wishbone, wheel bearings, pads, discs,I'm now getting a crack on braking and setting off a mechanic said it might be the spring which is on the back of the pads so i put new pads on still the same crack anyone any ideas.

Hi there,

Did the same front overhaul as you and got a knock under braking. The front bolt on the wishbones (pointing to the rear) that goes into the console has not been done up tightly enough. The play allows the wishbone to knock on the subframe on braking. Probably knocks under sharp acceleration too as it resets.

Today I have done the final bit of prep for Bert's sale this evening.
Clean inside and out, air freshener, removed the sports wheel and gear knob, added half a tank of fuel and laid all the paperwork out :)

Today I fitted a new battery in my A2. The original (17 year old) Varta was still starting it first time every time, but was clearly past its best.

I've done the same today - in the process of trying to get my key fob to open the doors again!

I've noticed sat here with the key in the ignition for a while that the climate control seems to be going through some sort of recalibration as well - or does it just always do that when you sit with the ignition on?
