Today I.....

Finally was fit enough to venture outside in the (relative) warmth and fit the AnyCar MP3s player from Amazon. After a couple of false starts I can now report that it works very well.

As it was dark by the time I finished installing it I didn't get the chance to actually position it properly, so it currently sits beneath the steering wheel with an SD card with 590 MP3 tracks on it (roughly 6GB worth). The most it can handle is 6x99 tracks due to the folder structure that is mandated by the player. Obviously no photos of the install yet until I can actually do it in the light to properly tie the thing down so I can access the SD slot.

The one thing from above that I have noticed is that the reader (same as XCarLink) does not like a number of different USB pens. Although it is quoted as being able to use them, the only one I could actually get working was only 1GB in size, so neither use nor ornament really. Others would start reading the card (or appear to), but would not actually start playing. Whereas SD cards worked first time, everytime.

Today I am wondering what I could use to restore 'yellowed' door trim? The bottom part of both passenger side trims has discoloured - I assume because the car has been parked in a certain place and the sun has been on that side through the OSS?
Has anyone had the same issue and successfully treated? The trim is Platinum.View attachment 46556
In my experience UV plastic discoloration is often irreversible.....Worth trying this method, if you're brave enough....

Delivery of new winter rubber :)

Main reason for ordering Pirelli tyres how low road noise is 66db only £44 a corner

They seem very good! I'll remember these tyres. However, when you see "winter tyres", what if you leave them on all year?

David

Winter tyres can be used all year but with higher wear and less grip in the summer.

Ran the wifes Vitara on winters (left them on after a holiday to Switzerland) and they lasted well, enough that we px/d with them on....

Sidewalls are super soft, was a passenger in a colleagues Jetta V6 out in the States where he had not swapped back to summers, the car was dangerous the amount of roll the tyre had. Still, he was driving like an idiot!
I think its right that a winter tyre loses a large amount of its grip once under 4mm. Ive a set for my E91 but doubt they would fit on any rims for the A2,

Merlin3046 - whatever you worked on - it can't have been rustproofing :).

Jamfit - have you found your missing 60bhp on the FSI yet? I saw that ad on Gumtree 20 mins after listing. If it had been anything other than an FSI I'd have been racing you to Rochester...….
Well sort of ...disconnecting air flow meter improves performance dramatically as engine switches to non dynamic map. So not a fuel pump or sparks issue. Plug in cyl 2 is black. Missfire is on cyls 3 and 1. Next step check comp, if good then suspect injector 2 causing incomplete combustion that's detected downstream and for which ECU attempts to compensate by leaning off, hense misfire on 1&3. Maybe ?.

Sounds like you are on the case and well prepared for the challenge.
If it had a big SU and supercharger I'd be confident MJS ...I know near naught of these moderns! Vid below is boost gauge on the 75 ...when first mapped it ran higher pressure, 40k with big boost has taken the the off performance but it's still great fun.

An A4 climate control unit arrived in the post today so I managed to swap the buttons over ?

Tried removing thw buttons whilst still fitted, managed with the temperature and blower but was struggling with the smaller buttons so decided to strip it down instead. Wish I had done that from the start!
Only down side so far is the demister buttons light up yellow ?
Just need to find a concert or a doner unit now!

A few points.

It is supposed to light up yellow to show it has been pressed. Strange how only two do this as standard????

I would buy a replacement Concert in good nick. I have been watching eBay for 18 months waiting for the ideal donor with 'not working' and a price of £10ish but have only ever seen one, I bought it. Sellers seem to know the value of unworn buttons and even if sold not working still £20ish and few and far between.

Your two Concert knobs are overly depressed. You can fix this to some extent by pulling them off, inspect bits and put back as it is supposed to be.

The rest of the other outer buttons (up,down, centre & econ) light up red when depressed, I’m pretty sure the two demisters werre red when depressed before but maybe I’m mistaken.

Didn’t think there was anything wrong with the knobs, they push in and out which I thought was standard.

I’m on the lookout for a Concert, they do seem to be anything between £10 & £100. I’ve seen a couple on Facebook market place at around £20 which are quite tidy however they don’t seem to be willing to post. I’ll get there eventually, it’s all down to what it’s going to cost me ?

Disco Stu - I have a working Concert with code. Your bad buttons are all good on mine and your good buttons are bad on mine. If you wanted to make one good out of the two then you can have it for £20.00. (I have not personally swapped Concert buttons over but I believe others have). It should post (well wrapped) for £3.50. If this is of any interest then send me a PM and I'll send some photos.

Your climate lights are working as they should. Why those two buttons illuminate yellow and others stay red when pressed is beyond me, but this is normal.

Concert knobs. From your description the knobs are not right, they should NOT be 'in or out'. In fact they are in the same position (same protusion from housing face) when they are 'on or off'. For example to turn on radio only a gentle press of knob is required, it moves in about 1 mm, and pops back out to its original position when finger is removed and the radio works. I think it is a misconception of a previous owner that the knob has to physically pushed in to work and they have applied too great a force and broken it. The same action occurs when turning off it does not need to pulled out.

As I said it is easy enough to fix but the mechanism will be weaker and might have a tendency to depress too far (and need fixing again). If you are happy and it works for you what the hell.

Andy

Edit. Bite mjrbrabes's hand off, a generous offer. Easy enough to swap buttons, very similiar to climate button swap. I did do a detailed 'How To' but I don't think you will need it, but PM me if you want a link.

Odd as I have a concert on which the on off vol knobpushes right in to switch off. Push again to switch on and it pops out. All works fine. Thought this was standard!!

There seem to be both types advertised on eBay. Buttons on my old one are recessed as well - part no 8Z0035186A.
