600 miles from a tank???

I concur with Hightower. My first motorway return trip down to Kent from Derby I managed 362miles on full tank (light came on), refuelled 29 litres on return. I was pleased @ 56.7mpg approx but can see there is room for improvement. To be fair I was doing 70-80mph most of the way with a towny drive whilst down there, approx 30 miles.

Indulged in a bit of fuel-gauge roulette yesterday and today, but eventually bailed out when the DIS said I had 10 miles of range to go. Even then I still only pumped 38 litres in before the first click on the fuel pump.

Amusingly, after the fill-up, the DIS range said 735 miles! Not sure I'll manage that somehow.

... 6.4l average over a trip to Oulu in -25, so I figure for a petrol 700km is pretty much the limit with a 34l tank.

Have done 55miles since yesterday's fill-up and my DIS range has now gone up to 750miles still to go! I struggle to believe 800miles would be possible from one tank but my last few journeys have been blessed with zero traffic and I've been bimbling along in no rush, so I guess getting on for optimum MPG conditions. But is that the most ambitious DIS range ever seen?!

If I had the 42-litre tank, I'm reasonably confident that I'd see 600miles quite regularly. Getting that from my 34-litre tank remains a challenge, though!
I'll be interested to know what your 'final score' is from your current tank.

Tom

I'll certainly report back on my final score on this one!
Maybe if you had the 6th gear mod you'd hit 600 from the 34-litre tank ;)

I do 600 miles on a brimmed and vented 34l tank (I think that takes it up to 40l) on a semi regular basis. I do lots of 500m plus motorway journeys at 60 mph though. My tdi has no mods I'm aware of...

What year is that? The most I've ever managed to get into my tank was 34.7 litres (although it depends a lot on how far you're willing to go into the reserve, of course). First click shutoff is usually around 29L for me.

It's a 2003 53reg. I've looked at the manual and it mentions a 34 litre tank, I guess they wouldn't reprint a manual for that though. I've gone over my Fuelly history and it seems I've had a memory lapse. Not only have I only gone over 600mi twice, one those occasions, I've filled the tank to 42l and a few drops. I always thought the fuel tank size referred to the capacity without brimming and venting??

600 miles per 42 litres = 64.94 miles per gallon.
Given that Fuelly reckons you average 60.9mpg, and that you can fit so much more than 34 litres in your car, you've definitely got the 42-litre tank.

Cool - best tank ever, got 628 miles from the tank! DIS said I still had another 20miles left to go (although the gauge was the lowest I've ever pushed it to), and I pumped 38 litres in before the first click so probably did have a bit more I could have squeezed out of it!
DIS range on re-fill said 795miles, ha ha!
Either way, that's an average of over 70mpg for that tank. Had to drive like a monk to achieve that though.

Nice one. I've only ever acheived 476 miles, took 32 litres to fill it back up. That bigger tank would make all the difference.

Bigger tank, TDi and learning to drive like a saint have all helped for sure! Not convinced I can drive that carefully/slowly/focussing solely on MPG every time though.

I presume this is how full the tank was before you started? Or had you vented and brimmed to get 623 miles?

My PB is still some way short of 600 miles, but I've got the smaller tank. If I got 628 miles from a tank, I'd be averaging the same as a 3L.

The tank before I vented and brimmed to 40 litres. This tank it clicked on 38litres and I again vented and brimmed to 40. A little bit arbitrary I know.

Ah, well, as long as you brimmed it again, the maths with be close enough. Initially I thought you were saying you'd just taken it to the click, which would obviously be cheating!

Assuming your tyre circumference is standard, 628 miles per 40 litres = 71.4mpg. That's a really good score, Dan!
