A broken jewel - Urgent help needed: new rear axle, parts and advice...

If the costs are really adding up and starting to put you off, why not just take the whole setup from Clackers car and bolt the whole lot on. I'm sure Clackers can have a quick gander at the condition of the bits.

Changing the complete axle in one go is going to be a lot cheaper than overhauling everything.

The only parts you may have to buy new would perhaps be a handbrake cable and some flexi brake lines depending on how bad yours are but even then the garage could order these as needed.

Once in place and with you back on the road, parts could be changed individually as and when needed.

Good point! I know that I will have to buy new springs because he told me that the axle is from OSS so the spring would be stiffer. I probably don't need shock absorbers but it just sounds good to replace them with brand new ones :). Apart from that if the axle comes with wheels and drum brakes it would be perfect indeed. i will check with him. Thanks for the suggestion.

Why not just keep your existing springs for now? Obviously hard to judge in your photos, but they don't look too bad.
If you do want to replace the springs, it's definitely best to buy new. Audi's springs are not cheap but plenty of other German makers offer excellent quality alternatives at more affordable price points.

Yes, probably I will keep mines for now. I haven't had any issues with them so far.
When I browsed for new ones I found these two on eBay:
a) Monroe (£24.19 each)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MONROE-O...835703&hash=item2cdb7fd64b:g:fBsAAOSwr8tbn9AG
or
b) KYB (£15.81 each)

Are they good enough?

thanks for the comment, Steve. To summarise the charts - I went through the range of springs offered by the multi-site online places and Ebay, and where they listed measurements for spring height, spring metal thickness and spring coil diameter, I tabulated these and applied an equation that gives a relative (not absolute) spring rate so that different options can be compared. You can also see the "sport" versions that are typically ~30mm lower than standard in overall height, and other variants from other VAG models that could allow one to raise / lower the car outside standard ranges.

ie - autodoc.co.uk / buycarparts.co.uk / other brands of pkwteile.de and various places on Ebay.

The caveat with the table is that there seems to be not much by way of rational identification by the suppliers of models specific to particular option combinations except for 1.2tdi vs 1.4i vs 1.4tdi/1.6 and sport vs non-sport for these, so everything else is down to a lucky decision and then empirical experience of how it turns out on the car. Ie - some springs state "OSS" / "no OSS" / no air-con etc. but to be honest this annotation is quite haphazard.

Finally - the table is only as good as the data - if the online places or I have mis-copied the numbers (there are one or two springs where I wasn't able to cross-check from independent sources) then the info would be garbage. Also, Monroe and Bilstein springs don't supply the info to the online place so the tables are biased against these companies.

Just based on the numbers in the Ebay link you supplied for the KYB RH5514 (338H / 9.75mm / 108D), on paper these would be right in the ballpark of 1.4i rear springs, standard height, average spring rate etc. so you probably wouldn't go far wrong with these, and the Monroe 3436, although without measurements, is rated for 1.2tdi and 1.4i so probably very similar.

Yes, a rear axle fits into an A2 - I've done it. Obviously, put some old sheets down and wear old clothes.
Beautiful, cheers for that Alan, I'll hopefully be removing today/tomorrow, then try and get it up to Sarcho asap after that.
Old clothes is not an option...its all I own!!!!! But don't wear shirt and tie to work on cars!....hopefully with a bit of help form all on here we can get a fellow owner back on the road without a remortgage.

I've got mint leather interior so a bit wary about reclining and putting an axle onto the leather....i'll get my.tape.measure out at lunch to see if it'll fit (said the vicar).
Cheers.
I think I would take it out then!!! As it will mark/dent the seat

Thanks, Robin_Cox, It's a tremendous job you've done! Huge! Really really helpful. And also thanks for the clarification. Most likely i would go with Monroe, probably because of the brand name - I can't see any other good reason not to choose KYB's.

Ha-ha, looking how the costs are adding up indeed I am about to call my bank...

By the way KYB are a good OEM manufacturer, we have them on my sons A2 and there are no issues at all. Also, do not buy anything but Audi spring seats, the Audi items are cheap and the best quality, others just disintegrate.

Is it a good idea to search for spares wheels and drums that have been taken from a third car axle (not from mine and not from the one I'm getting from Andy) and not go for new ones because of the cost?

Thank you for the advice! Could you, please, tell me from where to order these - is there an Audi online shop? I should search by part numbers, shouldn't I?

Give the axle a good lick of hammerite as well for durability. Heres ours with KYB springs and shocks with Audi original spring seats and bump stops.

Why are you changing the alloys? did they get damaged when the axle broke? I don't understand the link

:) Maybe I've misunderstood something. I'm not familiar with all the automotive terms because English is not my first language and I only have a car for 5 months, but I'm learning... What do you mean by alloys? Can you specify the link in question - I've posted so many? I was advised that maybe it would be a good idea to change the stub axles and the wheel bearing as well. And the drum brakes. :) But, nothing else was broken apart from the rear axle itself.
