A broken jewel - Urgent help needed: new rear axle, parts and advice...

@sarcho - if you do buy the Monroe springs, please take measurements of these so that the data can be added to the spreadsheet. I have a pair of digital calipers from Lidl that I use to measure spring wire thicknesses ; otherwise the height and external diameter can be measured with a tape. Many thanks! Robin

I will certainly do that, not a problem! :)

Good morning fellow A2 lovers. :)
Whit your help now almost everything is clear for me about the parts and the repair work.
I'm still in doubt about the drum brakes. Obviously, the price plays a major role in my decision so, I've narrowed down the list to these three offers:
a) £94.49
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/REAR-BRA...chback&hash=item1c9dbaf797:g:cSEAAOSwLjxaVNRZ
b) £79.69
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rear-Del...chback&hash=item5d7c92a105:g:~dYAAOSwqrZa0EKl
c) £69.99
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A2-...chback&hash=item46833d2c49:g:rZEAAOSwoYxbesFa
I'm inclining toward getting b) but if c) is good enough in your opinion I will more than happy to save 10 bucks.
please let me know what do you think?
And do I really need new drums? Could I use the drums that will come with the beam and replace just the shoes? Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Stefan

personally I would use the existing drums unless they are very old and known to have covered a very high mileage.

Are these prices including all of the springs and bits as well as the shoes and drums? I ended up getting the pre-assembled kit for these because I couldn't trust that I'd put it together right

Crazily, Amazon have one of the best prices for the TRW stuff - the same drums listed at Mr. Auto above are 30 quid cheaper at Amazon-
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TRW-DB4299..._rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=8WK2ZH2AVE5HYNWXQHTT

but I found the assembled TRW GSK1404 brake mechanism for 8 quid less on Ebay (around 45) than on Amazon (around 53).

btw - if shopping around, beware of 1.2tdi drums (180mm diameter) as these are sometimes listed mixed in with the 200mm items needed for all other drum-brake A2s.

The axle I will be dropping off with you has good brakes on it already, I can't say the drums are new, but the handbrake worked perfectly on it...
If you want to fit and leave these on it I can't see you having a problem, you can then replace items as you go along...this will save a huge hit on your bank balance in one go...you can just get your car back on the road and go from there...
These are just my thoughts...

This is why its such a great forum. Great help/advice there.

I might be a bit late to this, but well done Clackers for getting Sarcho sorted.

Regarding your list of stuff and things too buy or not to buy. Just my 2 cents worth.

As you have the axle off the car, now would be a great time to replace the axle bushes and i always use Lemforder and can highly recommend them. Used them as well as Boge as an enthusiast for decades and they're top notch for quality.

If your springs are ok just re-use them, honestly it makes me laugh when i see people throw away good springs for aftermarket which are very often inferior in quality especially the finish on them. I'm very impressed with how A2 springs last on these cars! Ok yours are a little rusty but will clean up well most probably. I'm not saying all after market springs are inferior just that i can't be bothered trying the myriad of choice out there only to go back to the original as they're the best.Just my opinion.

If you could get new TRW drums they are good quality parts and would guarantee a perfect handbrake and a new set of shoes would be my choice.

If you don't have the money or the time to get the many parts you mentioned before Friday then at least get the axle bushes, one of those things that's kind of silly not to do as your in there now, but would be a pain to do later. Eveything else you could just replace as you go, but i can personally vouch for changing all in one go for that brand new car feel which always puts a smile on your face realising just how good something is when it is new. All the best cheers Mark.

Thanks, Mark
It was a good idea, but I was too late to order. There wasn't any online shop that that would be able to deliver Thursday or Friday morning. I can't see any local store that would have the bushes in stock. Missed opportunity alas.
