Information Audi A2 3L - Bought as non-runner...

The oil sensor most likely needs replacing. There are no Koni's for a 1.2. It's either OEM or Bilstein, not much else.

I had a little look at the oil sensor last night (and checked within VCDS that it's not reading an oil temp) but couldn't see how to remove the dipstick tube that fits into it.

Any tips please? Removing the upper plastic section is easy enough...

MG

The lower half of the dipstick tube is bolted to the sump and the oil filter assembly. Unbolt this and the sensor can be detached from the sump.

Glad to see you are getting the issues sorted, my car suffered terrible vibrations also which turned out to be the Dogbone mount on the gearbox this was replaced with a febi unit & has been fine since, although on cleaning & inspecting the old unit no wear is apparent but noted bolts were not very tight! When removed so I would check there first( under tray removal required)

Ok, I need to look at a parts diagram I think to find out where those bolts are.

I pulled the dogbone mount off and looked very carefully at it. It's in good condition and no amount of wrestling the engine (or watching it with the engine running) can find any issues.

The gearbox mounting however is saturated in oil (hydraulic) from everyone before me having tried to fix the car etc so I think that this is first on the list. It's a shame that you can't get to it, let alone see it with everything in there due to the 3L-ness!

Just checked the price for the gearbox mounting, part no: 8Z0199555S (1.2TDi 3L specific!) and it's £275.48 :(

I guess I've just found out why it hasn't been replaced... it's going to have to vibrate for a while longer as I can't afford that either :(

Have you asked Tom at CreweAudi?

Just stumbled upon this :) even at coast the mount is £243.00 and on factory back order so coming straight from Germany :(

As far as I can determine the mount is the same on all-diesel tdi’s from the search engines.

Interesting.

I can't see a different in photos of the mounting but it definitely has a different part number.

I even had TPS cross reference it with the chassis number.

I've managed to find a second hand one in Germany from a fellow A2 owner who wants to play with the old gearbox ECU so we've done a deal :)

Lots of updates...

The turbo vnt was seized so I've pulled it apart, stripped the exhaust turbine housing down to component parts and cleaned it thoroughly before re-assembling and re-fitting to the car. Now it goes properly and returns very good fuel economy!

.

The harsh vibration coming through from the engine, believe it or not was a combination of a juddering clutch (which I still need to fix) and play in the steering track rods. It was the metal on metal end float that was making the racket!

The oil temp sensor has started working more often!

Time for a full service and some winter tyres.

Hi. You're showing a real commitment to restoring this 3L. I hope you have a warm garage! Keep at it and tell us how it's going.

Thanks Alan, it's slowly becoming a nice car.

Now that I've replaced the steering track rods, the first 100 or so miles were suspension silent !!! but now it has a few clonks again so obviously the next weakest link has shown it's hand so I'll be inspecting the suspension again and looking for play in track-rod ends, lower ball joints (I really hope not as they're part of the aluminium arm which is 3L specific!) etc etc...

The stereo volume knob (I have the Concert stereo) has a very irritating habit when cold. When you try to turn up the volume, it suddenly jumps to zero. I presume that this is a common fault?

With all of the cold weather / snow & ice that has been happening, I've just ordered a set of Continental 145R14 winter tyres.

It's now major servicing time for the car. TPS dropped off oil, air, fuel and pollen filters and some 3L specific 0W30 VW 506.01.

I collected the 44 litre fuel tank yesterday and will be looking for the appropriate holding straps, fuel tank senders and look at exhaust systems as it's different for the larger tank. I may look at making a larger diameter system or maybe see if the 1.4TDi system will fit.

By the way, I am not sure if you are aiming to keep it totally OEM, but I had white dials made up by a company in Germany. Around £100.

I am pretty sure that they could make up a black MPH Speedo face for you. You only need that half too so it would probably be even cheaper than mine.

An easy swap too and it would look totally OEM? Or would you want to keep the KPH speedo face?

I actually started looking at this earlier this evening.

The immediate problem is that my speedometer only goes up to 200km/hr which is 125 mph.

All of the UK spec clocks seem to go up to 150mph? So if I was to use this, the speedometer would be very out as a result

They will make up one that will be spot on MPH wise, they put the MPH dial segments exactly where they should be, it is completely tailored to suit.

The positioning of the MPH markings is a mathematical calculation, basically they can put the MPH marking to line up with 1.6 of where the KPH markings were.

It would be as accurate as any MPH speedo would be.

It does not matter as everybody will know what you mean but surely the 8/5=1.6 conversion factor should be the other way round, viz 5/8=0625, or to be more precise 0.621371.....! - Andy

MPH scaling is a legal requirement for a UK registered car and should have been done by the original importer, as he would have signed a piece of paper saying that he would do so.

When I was looking at the cost of the arms, at this site https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/audi/...-links-control-arm-trailing-link-diagonal-arm I was surprised to see listed (at the top) aluminium arms as they were only for the 3L I thought. Looking at the photos of all the arms (steel, cast and alu) they all show ball joins. The aluminium ones are Vaico and about £47 and £50 (strange left is cheaper than right). Whether they have them in stock is another matter.

I was thinking I might go for aluminium myself if they can be used instead of steel. Not only will they not rust but they are cheaper than steel which are circa £120 each.

I'm very aware of this fact. I had to carry out this change on my Lupo 3L when registering it with DVLA hence mentioning it and looking for a solution.
