Excessive vibration

If it’s revs related - Could it be that the balance shaft chain has slipped?!

Have you had this chain and tensioner replaced in the past? Based on collective experience failure becomes more likely after around 125k miles, certainly it should be replaced after 150k miles for peace of mind.

Sorry to be a harbinger of doom but the metallic clink plus the vibration symptoms could be fair warning of imminent engine failure if not caught.

😭😭😭 oh no not the oil chain…..I think Sarge warned about that a long time ago. I’m at 146k so it makes sense. I can hear my wallet groaning from across the room 🤣

Mines done 149000 and theres something starting, cant say I dont think of it every few days whilst doing 80mph on m5!! Must fit TT steering wheel out of my boot first of course, much more fun!

Oooooo TT steering wheel, is that the flat bottom one?!

When is your cambelt next due? Might be a good idea to bring it all forward.

First step is a stethoscope to the front of the engine while running to confirm.

No record unfortunately but the belt looks virtually new. Just got to wait for a day the garage can get me in now. I looked at phil’s amazing oil chain replacement thread - WAY beyond my limited capabilities so running around in the Jazz for now. I wonder where I can get my hands on a stethoscope 🤔

Amazon or eBay. Search for “mechanic’s stethoscope”

Does anybody think a worn oil chain could definitely cause the vibration at 1200rpm issue? The timing of the engine is out, but can a worn chain jump inside the casing and cause this issue without actually coming off the cogs completely? Injectors, cylinders, mounts, dog bone etc all good, definitely an engine issue from the chain area, which itself is very noisy.

And here is the cause of the issue……..

That could have been VERY nasty
I’ve been extremely lucky - now I know why Sarge was so worried about our engines, he was absolutely right! Does anybody know of part numbers/availability etc for the crank sprocket - it doesn’t come with the timing chain kit I don’t think?

Wow - Normally I enjoy being proved right but this could have so easily gone south for you!! Good save, well done for making haste with the diagnosis and pulling it apart to confirm.

There was I'm sure a comprehensive article on the part numbers - briefly, there was a Febi kit that included ALL the sprockets, then that went NLA and the one you can get now is missing the crank sprocket; meaning this must be ordered separately. 7ZAP is your friend there I would have thought.

EDIT: Take a read of THIS thread started by @philward and also THIS thread is useful for explaining the differences in the available kits. Looks like Febi 43667 is what you need if you can find it, else as above you'll need to get the Febi 32266 kit and purchase the crank sprocket separately.

Double EDIT!: Check out THIS KIT FROM FAI Autoparts - I'm 80% sure it's what you need (and has all four sprockets) - it's also very cheap for what it is!

Here is the parts diagram thanks to several members, in case anybody reads this and needs the info.

Just mulling over which cambelt to go for - genuine or INA - what do you think, is it worth the £65 difference for genuine?

I was VERY tempted by the FAI kit, being a lesser known maker (at least to me) I decided against it. The Febi 43667 kit is NLA. However, for a few pounds more, I managed to get the Febi 32266 kit. If needed, I will order the crank sprocket (045105209) separately. The Febi 32266 kit seems a lot smaller than expected, although the quality is obvious and the weight of the parts inspires confidence.
