Excessive vibration

Posted without comment…….

I think my 90 could be the same possibly, vibration is quite bad on tick-over but gets better, not 100% though, as speed increases. DMF was done approx 25k ago

How is the service history on Froggys car; ie oil changes?
Mine has been badly neglected prior to buying it. Apart from anything else it was left stood in a field for over a year. I do think (and it’s not based on any science, just my own experience with 3 of them) that neglecting oil changes has a very detrimental effect on the A2.

I'm just wondering how some do that and others with higher millage don't.
It’s an excellent question - read from this post in the first of the two previously mentioned threads and you’ll see that after some discussion re: how chain, tensioner & possible sprocket replacement should be considered a service consumable item based on mileage, the focus then moved to exactly this point: Why do some cars - even those with good service history - suffer such catastrophic wear at relatively modest mileages, yet others enter the 200k club without issue?

Not just neglected services but poor servicing with inferior parts and wrong oil make a world of difference. The more they are run into the ground the worse everything is.

Just think how many out there have not had their brake fluid changed yet. Considering it is three years for the first time and every two years after that and that includes the clutch. Then you have the old coolant or worse the old wrong coolant, the bodged sensors etc.

Probably one of the only faults that is not directly down to bad or no servicing is the corrosion that over time eats away the pressed steel wishbones.

Mines been serviced religiously with no apparent corners cut at any time by the mountain of invoices from 3800k onward from Audi and a well known gti specialist, but with no records of chains having been done.

Still feels like DMF though….

That's the first time I've been told it's an excellent question, thank you.

Update*
Had the car back for almost a week now. First impressions were extremely positive, unbelievably smooth and quiet, ticking over like a sewing machine. Yesterday I swapped alloy wheels and noticed a much quieter smoother ride again over what it was before. After around 20 miles of driving (post wheel swap) I noticed a strange sound from the engine. It’s tricky to hear it on the video, but once you do…..It’s underneath the familiar tappety TDi engine noise, a dry repetitive whirring sound, a bit like a running belt noise. Or possibly a 1950’s Sci-Fi UFO sound 🙃. It could be that the previous loud noise from the chain has stopped me hearing it before but I doubt it.
Is this just a normal noise for the AMF 75? Another thing I’ve noticed (and this has me really worried) is a drop in revs? Previously the car ran at 2450rpm at 70 snd 2000rpm = 55/58. Now 70mph equates to 2390rpm and 60 = just under 2000rpm.

Are the tyres identical? This sounds to me like there is a small change in rolling circumference impacting on the speed reading.

Secondly - with regard to the noise in the video clip - does it go away if the clutch pedal is depressed? It sounds a wee bit like the slight rumbly noise the clutch fitted along with my PTW gearbox makes on the idle in neutral.

Hard to hear the noise like you are without the car in front of me but I can hear it. Doesn’t sound particularly unusual to me.

Agree with Robin on the tyres / overall wheel circumference- If you hit a given speed with less revs than it’s a good swap all round.

Thank you very much everyone- I took a trip to the shops this morning warming the car up to temperature carefully as always and the revs have returned to normal! 2450rpm at 70 again 🤔 I think it definitely sounds like a tensioner/pulley sound now you all mention it so will get it checked next week but you have put my mind a rest as I was leaning towards something sinister.
As a side note, I had to park my car up on the main car park, instead of directly outside my house in front of the cameras, and around 3am some cheeky scamps on cross bikes dipped my tank 😭 at least they only took a fiver or so but its got me thinking about a locking fuel cap.

@froggy A point to note is that if the aux belt has been removed it is important it is refitted the same way round it ran before. If not you can get noise, vibration and even belt failure.

When I fit belts I always try to have the lettering / numbering readable from either the front of the engine or from the pulley end of the engine depending on how the markings are on the belt. That way if removed easy to remember the correct direction.

I had the cam-belt and water pump replaced at the same time as the oil chain, could an incorrectly re-fitted aux belt (serpentine?) run perfectly for 300 miles before causing noise issues? Of course it needs immediate attention, but If the belt is the issue and fails whilst running I’m pretty sure the damage wouldn’t be as catastrophic as the cam belt letting go?
