Fuel record:)

Hey Lisa R,

..I can't believe you get over 300 miles from your 1.6 before having to fill up.

I must be doing something your not?!?

Mik

hmmmmm...had my 2004 1.6 fsi for 2 years now and without fail it does 400 miles from the tank being filled to the fuel warning light coming on (I don't let it go any further than this, so don't know what extra distance it would do on the reserve).

I have the 2004 Audi sales/spec brochure for the A2 which says it's a 42 litre tank, and at the 400 mile mark it usually takes 35 litres to fill again (which tallys with Bret saying it's a 7 litre reserve) - so that's 400 miles on 35 litres = 50mpg.

Out of habit (many years ago I owned an old VW with an unreliable fuel gauge & no warning light!) for many years now on all my cars I have reset the trip to zero everytime I fill the car, and write the mileage on the back of the receipt, so I know when to expect the light/beep to operate!.

My A2 does spend almost it's entire life out of town however - no stop-start 30mph commuting ever- and mostly on fast roads cruising at around 65 - 70 mph. There's usually only me in it and no luggage (unless it's coming back from the supermarket) so it's not running heavily laden. I also don't use the air-con all the time (it's off more than it's on) plus it always gets BP 98 ron fuel. These things all make a difference, but I don't consciously drive trying to wring every mile out of every gallon.

Worst it's ever done was 340miles between fill ups, which was when I was in germany for 2 weeks in late 2007 driving on unrestricted autobahns where it sat for long periods at around 100 - 110 mph. Although the Shell garages there had 100 ron V power so it got fed that!.

The spec brochure quotes mpg figures as 34.9mpg urban, 60.1 mpg extra urban and 47.0 mpg combined, so I'm happy averaging 50mpg.

hehee Mike1410, I wonder if the climate is better where you are which may also help with the mpg??? ;)

...plus your roads are probably better kept as well!

Each time I fill up I also set the tripometer back to 0 and only feed the premium/super stuff from either BP/Shell or occassional ESSO

I think I've just concluded I don't drive my A2 as economically as one could all the time, also being in london probably doesn't help...

i didn't run air con as that puts a big drain
Does it?? I managed to discern a 2 or 3 mpg difference with climate on. Hardly a big drain, unless you're looking for that last ounce of economy. My CC is left permanently on. I think that does it good and keeps it running sweet IMO. YMMV though.

Cheers,

I average about 45 mpg with mixed A & B roads and then mostly Enfield, air con on most of the time. I keep a record book of everything that Annabell has had, including every fill up since I've had her. The most expensive per litre was in July last year, 119.9!

milder climate than UK yes, winter has just hit NZ - with daytime temps around here in the top central N Island struggling to hit 10 degs :D dropping to about 2 deg overnight, but the car & I have only been here since last July.

NZ roads are ****e - some of the worst maintained I have ever driven on, there are vey few stretches of dual carriageway or m'way standard roads outside of the big cities, and even then the national speed limit is 100kmh (62mph) - although that helps the mpg!. UK has much better quality & faster roads - just more traffic on them.

Nah, .......being in London definately doesn't help!:):):)

If the weather is hot outside the aircon will work harder as it will run to keep the temp down as with climate it will click on and off as the it gets to temp and so on, the TDI in the winter (below 6degrees) the webasto will cut in and use more fuel only when the air con is on.I'm not saying i don't use it i just mean that i wanted to get the most out of the tank so i turned it off and it works as i got the most i've ever had out of a tank ;)

Just to add if you run it on AUTO all the time it will lock the vent motors in 1 positionand you may find faults come up when you get it scaned, so try once a month come off AUTO and use the directional buttons on the side(use them 1 at a time then all 3 then 2 and so on) then go back to AUTO settings that should keep them freed up

Cheers Phil

Yeah... You have a good point there Phil. I guess when it gets hotter it will work harder. I do motor my flaps now and then too. My missus hates AC so always turns it off when she drives it so it gets a good range of selections.

I don't think my car has a Webasto. Not sure. Maybe it has the electric version. I have never checked.

Ta,

When you have the bonnet off next time, just behind the drivers head light you will see a little motor with a little exhaust from it going down to under engine tray, as yours is similar to mine 02 (52 plate) i would think yours has the same as me. in the winter when its cold you can see the fumes coming out from under the engine

hi

i roughly get around 360 - 390 to full tank and this is when i press the button inside the fuel opening to let out the trapped air! normally i was only getting around 320 to full tank but that was town and motorway driving at speeds of 70+. i have a 1.4 tdi basic version :(

regards cammy

if you look inside the diesel entrance about an inch right hand side theres a little black circle thing. if you push it away from you, it will release the trapped air inside your fuel tank allowing you to put more fuel in, im guestimating at around 3 ltrs extra or slighlty more however, ive been told not to fill it to the brim when doing this as during the summer deisel will expand with heat! i have a 2001 tdi so im not sure you guys will have this on later models.

Mines a 2001 tdi.

Is it the small black rubber bung like thing with what looks like a pin hole in it.

Mine is at the bottom of the filler hole if it is?

Although it doesn't look like you can push it?

my terminology isnt the best when describing motor parts  but i would say that your spot on with your description. i know its at the right hand side just inside the filler hole. you should be able to push it as if your pushing kinda forwards. when you fill your car to the brim push the button (sugababes lol) and you will see the diesel drop down back into tank. it usually takes about 3 attempts using this method to get maximum fuel capacity. i rekon its about 3 litres extra which to me is worth the button push :D

maybe someone else can describe or relate to what im talking about!

im a little stumped that alot of people dont know about this!!!!!

I should know better!!!

Thats NOT anything for pushing! It's the overflow for fuel spills (though having pushed it in and managed to dislodge it, I have now split the rubber gaitor and had to remove the fuel flap to get at it again) A valuable lesson learned methinks. On the upside I got to play with my new torx set! Whats the damage and the part number for a new bit Skip? :D;)

Murdo try looking down the neck, take the fuel cap off and look down the neck mine's on the right hand side of the neck, i'll take a photo tomorrow if i remember

Cheers Phil
