I’m back 1.4 or 1.6

Some very good interesting comments above and confirms what we were seeing on our 1.4 BBY although not quite as good as what Tomscar is capable of and a million miles away from his oil consumption of only half a litre every six months. Wow that must be a record for one of these or is that how they should be?

This pic was after 2 long runs and a few cold starts up some steap hills in Wales and back to london again reading no miles left for the last 15 miles or so on fuel vapours. lol

Ours has slight Piston slap when cold which seams quite common and had a serious appetite for oil ie; 4.5 litres over 10,000 miles. It still drove fine and it could be the oil consumption is just down to the the oil breather box getting gummed up, which imo should be treated as a service item much like a cambelt in frequency.

If you do your research Tazio you'll find that although the 1.4 petrol is fairly reliable they can develope a thirst for oil and piston slap. Audi recognised the problem and in 2004 updated the piston rings. The originals have a tendency to gum up especially with lots of short journeys and infrequent oil changes. I really like the 1.4 BBY they are a very smooth unit if you find a good one but are a little slow on the take of which doesn't bother me as it's quick enough once your going and it is the pick of the bunch in the handling stakes. Ours feels like a go kart on it's sports suspension and 17" sport alloys, literally very alive, great steering and superb flat handling through the twisties.

Our 1.6 fsi had the EML light on when we bought it Feb this year but after some research and getting our A2 man to repair it it's been perfect since, much smoother than when we first got it now it's all been repaired and is even better on fuel than our 1.4.

I have a light foot mostly to get the best in terms of fuel economy, but put the foot down just a little and the fsi takes off! It's a quick car, i really like fsi and the 1.4 BBY,.......... they just have different characters. :)

So, what was the cause of the EML light coming on? I have the same problem; reading out the fault codes only ever shows P0300, P0302 or P0304.
It's not the ignition, and when running well it's really good.

Set point not reached forget the code but it's the flaps in the lower inlet manifold that don't return properly. Roughly 3 months after buying, it developed a really minor misfire on no 3 i think and these misfires are nearly always injectors. These were my problems here. ? The Green Goddess

FSI? You ask a dangerous question. Diesel heads will come up with all kinds of disparaging answers. To give you the flavour at its crudest level 'FSI=F****** Stupid Idea'.

Please no more guys we don't want the thread to degenerate in a host of one liners.

Andy

PS? I have two FSI's.

Spot on!

Just put the starter motor back and was going to post this picture in the 'What I done today ... '
390 miles and still around a quarter of a tank to go :DView attachment 45768
Aha! I can see where the problem with your fuel consumption figures has come from. It's a Friday afternoon car. You've got a 1.4tdi, but they fitted the wrong rev counter numbers and badges on at the factory... (I assume Neckarsulm is just like Longbridge?) . :)

The 514 miles you got was very impressive, got to agree with the 'light foot' approach, driving style makes such huge difference to my mpg and most miles are covered at between 40 to 60 mph ... I haven't tempted fate yet but have taken it up to 480 miles before chickening out and filling up with around 40 litres. I seem to have been lucky with oil consumption compared to what others are using but I have never pushed the car to it's limits and there aren't any signs of losing oil around the engine, long may it continue, I would like to join the 200K Club :D

You might be onto something Robin, I had mine supplied without badges ... they've given me the wrong car, wonder if it's too late to return it :D

I got a 1.4, get 44mpg, and a litre of oil every 3/4000 miles.

Great car round town and B roads, pretty gutless on motorways.

I'm intending to replace the injectors before the next MOT. Did you fit new ones or did you have them reconditioned?

N03 had already been replaced with new and i replaced no4 which was playing up with a new Bosch injector. It's you choice which way you want to go but you might as well replace all 4 for £400 and just sleep well. Now i'm keeping the car i will if i get an injector misfire on 1 or 2 i'll just replace both of them for peace of mind. It depends on your budget.

Just one other thing, each time i replaced parts on the 1.4 BBY like all 4 genuine Audi coils i noticed the car was that bit smoother and ran more efficiently. The biggest difference was having the car Terracleaned it made a unmistakable difference immediately noticeable in that the car just pulled well more eager than before even in high gears at low speeds was even smoother and became more like it was when new, thats how it felt to me. So if your prepared to invest a little on things like that you will feel the benefits and have a bigger smile.

I can tell you those last 30 odd miles on the motorway were butt clenching for sure with the diss showing 15 miles left then nothing for another 15 miles, i had committed earlier to see how far it could go before we got home. An extreme light foot was used and those last however many miles it is from the M6 / M1 interchange was travelled at 50mph due to road works so decided to do the rest like that. I have a strong feeling that you will break the 200K club easily. :D

Good call by replacing all four coils with the Bosch ones, I had a failure flagged up during the summer, the first one in 188 000 miles and replaced the full set for reassurance ... at least I have three working spares now :)
Might be interesting doing a 'how to ...' on testing with a simple multimeter.

Looking at some of the comments on this thread there appears to be a wide range of mpg ... I have always averaged around 420 to 450 miles down to the bleeps and the fuel economy is one of the reasons I have held onto mine ... are we just lucky or is it our driving styles ;)

Been reading about terraclean as I’d be quite interested myself but also read of few horror stories so I can’t make my mind up...

I met our terra clean guy at the Croxley Green classic car show, quite a big event close to Sarrat if you know the area. I never looked into it and just trusted the guy on the trade stand. I'm glad i did because the difference was night and day for me. It may have been exaggerated because of the oil consumption problem but after the clean the car felt like new. You know that feeling you get when you take of your foot of the accelerator pedal abruptly you feel something? Not after the clean,.......... nothing, alls o smooth and effortless. Equally when pulling of at a junction all so seamless and smooth.

It's amazing to read your experience about your BBY and just goes to show how reliable certain cars can be depending on how well it's been looked after and i think it might have something to do with the fact your the only person who has serviced it. Going by what i've read i wouldn't be surprised if your reach 300k miles.;)

Thanks for that but I won't take all the credit ... just the simple stuff for me, I also use a German Independent over here in Northern Ireland for the really technical stuff, don't think I could tackle timing belts or a clutch, not yet anyway ... he works from home now and can recommend his attention to detail ... anyone on the forum from NI might know him .... Well I think a car has to be good and safe to drive. So nuts to mpg, please do not be a rolling road block.
Ive owned two A2s from new so have had all the varriants as courtesy cars. I can homestly say a 75 TDI with a remap is by far the best option.

I regularly encounter 'a rolling road block' on my route to work - old guy in a red Fiat Punto driving at about 48mph on a dual carriageway. Trucks get stuck behind him and then pull out to overtake and take an age to get past and it just blocks up the road - every time I see a 1/2 mile crocodile of vehicles in the outside lane it's always him that's the cause!
