KONI FSD'S or BILSTEIN B6'S

ha. maybe the bumpstops weren't shortened... and they should have been. I bet the bumpstops on all four suspension legs haven't been shortened and also that the rear springs are still on the standard rather than oversized spring seats. Will have to take everything apart at the Schraubertreffen in July.

Thanks for the link Bret - I already had a login from previous research but this is the first I've come across this topic. And a 10mm difference is quite sufficient to make a noticable change in the ride height.

I must admit I noticed the new yellow seat I'd ordered was thinner than the original black one on the car but the top seat is the same (large) thickness. From how I understood the thread it seems the different thickness is dependant on the vehicle weight rather than suspension.

Perhaps this may be why we have seen differences in other members rides heights?

it *should* change depending on the suspension setup, but other threads seem to dispel this (i.e. S-Lines were delivered with the larger cushions!). I think personally I'm going to see if I can find one of the H suffixes for "schlechtwegefahrwerk", which should raise things around 20mm. That would be very nice indeed and help bring mine back towards level.

More information I've gleaned over the last 24 hours says "350mm from centre of wheel hub to arch edge is 'normal'", with few getting lower than 310.

I'm going to be spending the next couple of days working on something else but will come back to this on Monday, maybe.

Just ordered some FK springs to go with my Bilstein B6's as recommended by John-wingnut, £40.33 for a full set.

http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/cheap/671469/audi/fk-high-tec-lowering-springs/fkai039.html

Also got word from Audi yesterday saying that the dual mass flywheel is faulty and the cause of the severe shaking vibration, they also said i do not have to pay for a new clutch either as that is part of the warranty due to the knock on effect of the flywheel.

£40 is just a silly price - what drop do they provide?

And also sounds like a result on the flywheel & clutch - new parts for free, Hurrah!

Yep, they are on offer as they are clearing stock. They offer around 35mm drop. I have them on mine with B8's and the ride hieght / stance / handling is great.

With reagrds to the spring mounts - the thinner top ones are for the sport model, they are 10mm shorter. The bottom PU yellow ones are the same on all models, my yellow ones are now black after a year lol.

The B6s will be OK with 35 mm then?

Bret will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the "schlechtwegefahrwerk" top spring mounts he is looking for add an extra 10 mm on top of that for use with rough roads.

I thought they were 25mm - 30mm, But they are 35mm - 40mm and i'm not after anything that low, got to give them a call back!!! :(

Im pretty sure I told you in a PM the FK springs were -35mm.

With regards to the top and bottom spring mounts for the rear of teh car, there are only 3.

2 different top ones (1J0 512 149 B and 1J0 512 149) which are 10mm different and the bottom yellow PU (8Z0 511 149 A) ones

Dunno what Bret is referring to H suffix ones??

John

there's an extensive thread discussing spring mounts and one thing that comes up is that the mounts are essentially the same for an awful lot of VAG cars. 1J0 512 149 H seems to be a usable seat for the spring at the rear, and one that will probably raise the rear of the car another 10mm over the standard seat. If it fits, which there's no guarantee for.

I have found them - they are completely different to our mounts.

The inner part, which rests inside the spring is smaller and thus would not mount springs for teh A2 correctly.

For info they can be found on A3 / S3 /Sportback, Skoda Octavia, Golf / Bora 4motion

Bret, I might be the only person with a setup you can compare to on this site. FYI, mine measures 335mm front and 340mm rear. I have not changed or shorten bump stops (in fact, I have not changed any other suspension bits or parts apart from the Eibach and FSD). I hardly get much weight at the back and it has never been crashy. I've only started having harsh bumps at the front with the Eibachs. I'm on 16 SE wheels, Falken 912s (195/50) at 30psi. It is pretty unbearable if I go 32psi. I think he Eibachs are 'sporty' but I don't think the FSDs suit them, I think it'll be better with Eibachs + other dampers which has good consistent damping rate.

After almost 2 weeks of living with an AUDI A3 1.6 TDI convertible whilst my car was booked in for a Dual Mass Flywheel repair, i have finally got it back today. I'm currently paying Warranty Direct a monthly fee to have an Audi dealer work on my car in the eventuality that something goes wrong that is listed in their covered section and to be repaired at a percentage cost depending on mileage of the car. You have to be able to show a current MOT and a valid Service reciept that proves your car is being kept upto date in accordance with their guidelines.

I've ended up paying £226.88 today for a new Flywheel and Clutch with all it's fittings and that included £50.00 to Audi for taking on the job in the first place. I also got a free wash and valet too, it's been a good couple of weeks giving Darmel a rest but it's nice to have her back. The clutch feels really light now which i have had to get used to in this weather, it reminds me of when i first drove the car away from Steath Racing after the remap. It's so much quicker and there is no more juddering on take off and the shaking from side to side when at a stand still has completly disappeared and i'm now left with a nice tapping sound of a diesel engine. Yeeah! Going to order some Meyle drop links and i already have the anti roll bar bushes to put on this weekend depending on the weather and with those in place it'll be time to concentrate on getting these Bilsteins sorted, I think it's going to be H&R's..........

update from me:
- the springs do NOT sit on the correct foam, so there's 10mm
- the top spring mounts are also the thin ones, so there's another 10mm
- the top bump stops were NOT shortened with the Eibachs, so there's essentially zero spring available when it's loaded. Checked this with a trolley jack on Friday; I think there's normally 10mm spring movement possible and no more.

In other words, this needs doing ASAP, but I've also now got two singing wheel bearings and either the driveshaft or a CV joint is shagged. Meh.

I'm taking in as much comments as possible Spike, but to be truthful i wouldn't be touching the Weitec's again as i personally think they are too soft for where i live, and to have a change and try a hole new setup i think would be the answer.

Have a look back through the suspension guide before buying H&R springs - they get a very poor write-up - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthrea...mpers-coilovers-and-airride&p=36420#post36420

I seem to recall Skipton tried some before this was published - and quickly changed to Weitec's

Cheers Spike
