London Cruise Fitting Mk2

Thanks very much guys - it's been a LONG day, but always good to meet new members, especially ones so enthusuastic about their little cars as you all were!

Thanks to our genial host for providing the meeting point and also for booking the weather!

See you all soon!

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks to everyone for a great day and your generous comments. Happy to host another meet at any time (next summer?). Of course none of this would be possible without Mike's skills! Cheers

Many thanks to Christian for the coffee & hospitality etc.
Even greater thanks to Mike for the fitting etc. Going home on the M25 was a real pleasure ~ especially using the resume function.
With three lots of 50mph (SPECS) roadworks on the M3 using the cruise was a massive bonus.

Thanks again,
Mervyn
PS. Great to see 3 red leather A2 lined up! Christian have you any pics?

You'll have to report back Mervyn on the relative merits of the Audi cruise stalk versus the VW version.

As it later turned out, Deseli was also equipped with the VW type, after her local dealership farmed it out to Hazzydays.

Any photos of the 3 red leather A2s would be great - bet it doesn't happen that often (especially when 2 of them are TDi 90s).

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks!

Many thanks guys!

The cruise was a treat on the M4 going home!!! Wicked mod!!!

Nice to meet good people on this forum!

For the record here's a shot of Me, Christian, Mike and Lisa:

Managed to give CC a good go today, trip down to Leeds (Castle) and back, very nice. Still getting used to engaging the function though - sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't, but it's coming - resume too is jolly good.

A few notes:

The '-' button seems less sensitive than the '+', and sometimes feels like it's not actually working... holding '+' accelerates just fine, but trying to slow down is much less responsive, and a few times I have (despite planning well in advance) needed to use the clutch/brakes to slow and then re-engage the CC at a lower level.

Slightly weird thing though, as I drove along with CC engaged around 70mph, I needed to overtake another car, so I pressed the accelerator pedal (fully) to speed up and it hardly responded, and took an absolute age to actually pick up speed. I tried turning off the CC completely on the stalk but it made no difference. It felt like it was almost locked in to slow-mo!?!

This is not how the car normally responds, and indeed a little later when I was driving without CC, it accelerated just fine around the 70-80 mark.

Does anyone (Mike?) know any reasons why this might be?

On another matter, perhaps as it's a new stalk, the feel of it is nicer than the old one, and when it clicks back after signaling it's quieter when it does so, a bit more solid perhaps.

Still loving the central locking beep!

Hi Deadman,

As I explained to you, the slowing function on the cruise stalk is reliant on engine braking, so depending on conditions, it won't be that effective and is certainly no replacement for your right foot.

The same is true of the accelerate function - it is not a replacement for the pedal and will try to speed the car up in the gentlest, most fuel efficient way, which is why you get the unresponsive feeling.

Your old stalk was nearly a decade old, whereas the new one was made in July this year, so it will feel crisper.

See you you go on with the cruise and if there's any issues, I'll take a look next time we meet.

Cheers,

Mike

As it stands at the moment I'm thinking I want the Audi version fitted to my TT even though it's had the VW version since new!. Would it be just changing the stalk or would the wiring need alteration as well?

Mervyn

Hi Mervyn,

I'm pretty certain that if you wanted to put the Audi stalk onto the TT, it'd just be a simple case of swapping stalks over.

As I said, Deseli also has a VW stalk and that is working just fine on the Audi wiring loom and pinout to the ECU, so it should be a pretty straightforward job.

I thought you might come to this conclusion - it is a more intuitive way of working and also, the whole reason of fitting the single button-ended stalk is to avoid tactile confusion with the rocker switch on the wiper stalk (for the DIS functions).

See how you get on and I can change it at a later date if you want.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike, all agreed apart from the bit I mentioned that the pedal seemed completely unresponsive (which is not normal) wheni went to overtake another car. That is quite wrong and seems to be a cc issue.

I'm off again today so will try it again and report back.

You're not the only one!

Sojah PM'd me today asking if he could still come down to it! If there was a way of putting a HUGE flag on a thread, I'd do it, but failing this, I don't know how you missed it.

3rd is still a goer, yes, as long as you can get that RNS-E to me beforehand for trimming.

Cheers,

Mike

Hey Sikhmans

My photos were pretty poor so I didn't post them up - but here are a couple, including one of you. Hope this helps!

'Skipton' London Cruise fitting

Hi Mike,

Just joined the owners club. Am interested in having the famous Skipton cruise control fitted to my A2 (TDI 90). Was wondering if the London fitting date was still a possibility? Please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Hermes

Hello Hermes,

As you may have gathered from the photos, this date has come and gone, so you're too late I'm afraid.

If you can make it to Audi Driver International on 10th October, see here: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?p=78862 then I could do the fitting there for you - it's a lot closer than Manchester for you to travel and you'll meet all the stalwarts of the club.

Cheers,

Mike
