New Emissions charge in London

They are hopeless.

As I said before, I had my car checked (2004 TDI 90) and it was exempt, then a few weeks later after changing the reg number (officially of course) I had it checked again, NOT exempt. I think that illustrates that they haven't a clue !!!!!

Think I mentioned it before but, here goes again for a laugh, my A2 tdi is guilty of the new 'T' charge, however my 3.2 tt isn't, work that one out lol!

The point to note is that if your car does not meet Euro 4/IV emissions standards, it is liable to the additional T-Charge tax. That's the criteria.

The bigger issue (assuming that charging is actually linked to the data used by the Compliance Checker) is where the TfL database identifies vehicles as liable which do actually comply, meaning there's a pointless - and, no doubt, tediously bureaucratic - obligation to register the vehicle because TfL's data is wrong.

20 days since two applications and an email complaint and as yet, no reply. I have now made a complaint to my MP.

Success of sorts. One Lupo, they have admitted, is compliant but the other, not yet, because of a change of registration number, even though the current V5 and the CoC show the same VIN number! I have to submit a document linking the former reg. no with the new apparently.

Second Lupo now compliant, although grudgingly:

Your vehicle is subject to the T-Charge but not chargeable.

If you have a compliant vehicle and TfL tell you it's not, open an account with them and make an application with supporting documents here:

https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/cc-contact-us-make-an-enquiry-wizard-37743

This may soon no longer be necessary as my MP is taking up the issue with Mr Khan (with the help of a link to A2OC).

Just received this morning - the replacement for the T charge is coming...

So, reading that letter Ian, who is going to pay to upgrade all the busses, emergency vehicles and such? The London tax-payer? Or will public transport just go up in cost to pay for the new fleet?

Then there's the increased cost of delivering goods to the capitol - aren't pretty much all lorries and vans diesel?

I think a can of worms is about to be opened by Citizen Khan!!

Well, in his infinite wisdom our (sarcasm mode on) beloved Mayor (sarcasm mode off) has frozen all single TfL fares until 2020, so unless he back tracks on that promise the funding will have to come from elsewhere.
Some of the larger central London couriers and stores do have some electric vehicles, Harrods, John Lewis and UPS to name 3, but these are the exception not the rule.
Knowing this was coming is the reason my A2 is a petrol one, as the ULEZ is cat 4 for petrol and cat 6 for diesels, so my car is exempt - for now.
Almost tempted to move back to Wales or Saddleworth...

I have finally received a reply from my MP about this, with a letter from the Mayor. Whether a vehicle "complies" depends only on when it was registered in the UK and not, as should be the case, the date of first registration (anywhere). So if you have a vehicle that is compliant, but registered before Euro 4 was required, TfL will tell you that it is not compliant. You can change this by making an application with supporting documents. On the other hand, if you have imported a vehicle that is not compliant and registered it after the above date, TfL will (presumably) tell you that it is compliant! There seems to be no attempt to differentiate between newly registered cars and imports.

I am not sure if this explains all the anomalies in this thread but that's how their "system" works.

But once the new ULEZ comes in next year, only diesel engined vehicles that meet Euro 6 will be exempt.
That’s why I have a petrol A2. They only have to be Euro 4 to be exempt from the ULEZ charges.
Also, the ULEZ will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To be honest, the thing I least want to do is drive in London, no matter what the vehicle!

Just noticed that the t-charge checker on TFL website is now charging the T-Charge even for the 2004 and 2005 TDI's, which I thought they were all Euro 4 therefore exempt? I have been looking recently to replace my 2002 TDI with a younger model, despite it drives like a dream, but alas I ive in central London.... All 2004 and 2005 TDI I was interested are all subject to the T-charge now. I am missing something or TFL has just tightened the screws??

You can apply to directly TFL and point out that the fact that these models are actually compliant. Their checker is as bad as a random draw machine.

But from next year, when they scrap the T charge and start the ULEZ instead, no A2 diesel will be exempt as the diesel standard is Euro 6. That’s why I’ve got a petrol A2, petrol engined cars have only to be Euro 4 compliant
