Not So Far Off ....

Good afternoon folks,

Just waiting on a new 'pendulum mount' arriving via the Skoda Dealer and the Transmission Fluid is waiting to be picked up ... then booking an MOT after being SORNED since late 2019.

Lots of jobs tackled in that time ... new wishbones ... drop links ... brake callipers stripped and overhauled with new back plates ... starter motor rebuilt ... new rear springs, rubber seats and struts ... thermostat, coolant pipe and housing replaced with new parts.

Dirt Doctor bought and looking forward to giving the inside a good cleaning.

The latest piece in the jigsaw was investing in a genuine Ross-Tech VCDS Hex V-2 from Gendan.
Scanned today and unsurprisingly came up with a few faults ... a couple of alarm triggers while parked up, airbag fault and quite a few disturbing faults logged in the HVAC.

I've printed out the scan below and if anyone is interested or can point me in the right direction in interpreting the faults it would be most appreciated!!

Save the codes & then clear & reset them running the engine if you can , a/c codes don’t worry to much about at present.
Rescan after a short run/drive & see what reoccurs.
Flaps can quite often be cleared by running the individual controls repeatedly 1 by 1 many times
?

Thank you so much KP 115 ... will do as soon as the engine mount arrives and I get the gearbox filled with new oil ... in the meantime I might try running the 'adaption' mode for the flaps ... maybe not the right thing to do but looking to play with my new toy ?

Very wise investment & will definitely pay for itself over & over again.
Make sure you save your any settings before deleting codes or settings.

A steep learning curve for me, been after VCDS for a long time and useful for the Citigo as well .... thanks again KP 115.

Dont get overly worried about HVAC codes!
if you run the temp controller to Lo and then Hi a couple of times to exercise the flaps likewise then the airflow selection flaps off and on. Clear any faults, (you may need to do this a couple of times) and then run another scan.
I think I have seen “No faults found” on the HVAC page only a couple of time despite the system working fine.

Thanks Simufly .... I'll try that when I get the car running again, just got the gearbox to fill and the new dogbone mount to install, should be here early next week ... going to have a play with VCDS tomorrow and try and learn a little bit ?‍?

Followed the Audi procedure and filled the gear box until it started flowing from the filler hole and had the car driving for a couple of minutes to warm up the gear box and distribute the oil about.
1.5 litres of the old oil removed and it took 1.8 litres to refill ... guessing it must have used some in the last 19 years or so.
Rechecked the level by undoing the filler plug and a a few drops overflowed .... assuming it expands when its warm and didn't need to put any extra in.

New Pendulum Mount (Dogbone) installed and torqued to 50Nm at the gearbox end and 40Nm + 90° at the subframe end.

Save the codes & then clear & reset them running the engine if you can , a/c codes don’t worry to much about at present.

Hi KP ...

Thanks for the advice, the car is all back together again .... I cleared the fault codes, played around with the controls, up and down etc for a good half hour today while idling and then done a 'basic setting' on the HVAC module with VCDS ... let it all cool down, had some lunch then had a drive up and down the driveway a few times until back up to temperature and then another full scan ... results are below.
No faults have returned yet and all good for now .... plenty of heat or icy cold ??

Excellent news .
Bought mine at 122,000 approx in 2015 & I’m now on 272,900 Miles they are fantastic cars .
All the best
Keith.

Good afternoon folks .....

I think we have more or less the same motoring rules in Northern Ireland as the rest of the UK ... but I'm at a loss trying to work out how to get mobile again in a legal manner after a period of Statutory Of Road Notice.

I know you can legally drive at the minute providing you have proof of a pre-arranged MOT booking but there is a two month waiting list at our council run MOT Centres.

I can insure the car easily but I can't tax the car without an MOT.

So my question is ... can I legally drive without tax to have repair or replacement work done on my exhaust system whilst awaiting for an MOT slot?

Am I overthinking this?

No, you're not overthinking this. The only way you can legally drive to have work done on your exhaust system is if you book that work to take place immediately ahead of your MOT, so that it becomes part of the journey to the MOT Centre (which does not have to be by the shortest possible route).

Best to have the vehicle recovered to the garage for the work, saves all the what ifs. ANPR cameras are everywhere and automatically get the system to send you a penalty notice. Be it SORN, tax or MOT.

I suppose trade plates may be a way to have the work done also.

No, you're not overthinking this. The only way you can legally drive to have work done on your exhaust system is if you book that work to take place immediately ahead of your MOT, so that it becomes part of the journey to the MOT Centre (which does not have to be by the shortest possible route).
Thank you Steve ... that makes sense and sounds like a plan.

That's a possibility, I was going to replace the back box myself, then simply book an MOT cancellation slot ... even ordered a cheap Klarius of eBay and was given the run around when they cancelled today after ten days of waiting ... can't find a replacement anywhere else!
Many thanks for responding ... Tom

Perhaps one of our breakers (@A2Steve @Clackers @Ami) could supply you with a second-hand rear exhaust box?

What engine? I only have an fsi back box at the moment...any use?
Thanks Clackers, I have a 1.4 BBY with 42l fuel tank ... I think the cost of getting it to Northern Ireland would make it uneconomical but I appreciate everyone's input.
The rear box has developed a leak along the seam ... I have a few options to go down:

1. Do a temporary repair using exhaust putty and try to book the car in on an MOT cancellation ... just means that I would have to be ready to go at a moments notice. Problem solved, tax the car and drive to the repair centre and perhaps have a new stainless steel system made from the second 'cat' back.

2. Try and buy an aftermarket rear box and install it ... having zero luck at the minute finding one, contacted Klarius today and the news is they still manufacture and supply the rear box but not the middle one, they don't sell directly to the public and gave me a list of where to buy from, none of which have it in stock ... I don't believe it's stainless steel and that would perhaps also be a temporary fix.

3. The system is in pretty good shape overall considering its still original and 190K ... the place I'm looking at to do the work have an excellent reputation and can maybe repair if they say a new system isn't necessary.

4. There a couple of Powerflex franchises and a few independent manufacturers dotted around Northern Ireland to have one made.

I will try ringing ECP tomorrow and see if they are willing to order the Klarius AU362D back box ... failing that I'm favouring option one, then I can get taxed and legally drive around at leisure and get sorted on a more permanent basis.

Thanks to Steve C, Audifan, Catnip 64, Ami, Clackers and everyone for your advice ?.
